Human surrogate models of neuropathic pain.

2005

Neuropathic pain is defined as pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system (Merskey and Bogduk, 1994). Current efforts to refine this definition focus on the terms ‘dysfunction’ and ‘nervous system’ with the intention to clarify that there has to be an identifiable lesion or disease process affecting the somatosensory system. Experimental models of neuropathic pain according to either one of these definitions are expected to imitate mechanisms of nerve damage within the peripheral or central parts of the somatosensory system and the ensuing processes of degeneration and regeneration. Whereas this approach to model the etiology and pathophysiology of the…

Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration in a woody species: the European Spindle Tree (Euonymus europaeus L.).

1993

Somatic embryogenesis and subsequent plant regeneration of Euonymus europaeus L (European Spindle Tree) were obtained from square pieces of mature zygotic embryos with an intervening callus phase. Callus and somatic embryos were induced using a Murashige and Skoog's semi-solid basal medium supplemented with several combinations of auxins and cytokinins. The greatest number of somatic embryos was obtained with a continuous exposure to 22.8 μM indoleacetic acid and 0.046 μM kinetin. The frequency of somatic embryogenesis from zygotic embryos depends on the cold conservation time of seeds. The embryos frequently germinated on the same medium. Further development of somatic embryos into plantle…

Dataset relative to article "Sensitivity and specificity of a commercial ELISA test for anti-MAG antibodies in patients with neuropathy"

2021

This record contains data related to article “Sensitivity and specificity of a commercial ELISA test for anti-MAG antibodies in patients with neuropathy". Abstract For the diagnosis of anti-MAG polyneuropathy the commercial ELISA manufacturer currently recommends a cut-off of 1000 Bühlmann Titer Units (BTU). We analyzed sera from 80 anti-MAG neuropathy patients and 383 controls (with other neuropathies or healthy controls) to assess the ELISA sensitivity and specificity at different thresholds. A better combination of sensitivity/specificity was found at a threshold >1500 BTU than at >1000 BTU. The best value of specificity was obtained at threshold >7000 BTU. There…

2021

This record contains data related to article “Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy: can a diagnosis be made in patients not fulfilling electrodiagnostic criteria?" Abstract Background and purpose: The aim was to identify the clinical and diagnostic investigations that may help to support a diagnosis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) in patients not fulfilling the European Federation of Neurological Societies and Peripheral Nerve Society (EFNS/PNS) electrodiagnostic criteria. Methods: The data from patients with a clinical diagnosis of CIDP included in a national database were retrospectively reviewed. Results: In all, 535 p…

The Association between Cognitive Impairment and Diabetic Foot Care: Role of Neuropathy and Glycated Hemoglobin

2020

Diabetes mellitus is associated with impairment in cognitive functions which can complicate adherence to self-care behaviors. We evaluated the incidence of cognitive impairment in patients with diabetes mellitus to determine the strength of the association between diabetic foot (a complication that occurs in about 10% of diabetic patients), adherence to the clinician&rsquo

Cambios en el comercio exterior de los países del este. La difícil reinserción en Europa

1999

Changes in the foreign trade of the countries of the East. The difficult assimilation into Europe. The direction of the trading lines of the post-communist countries has been modified by the political and economical changes of the countries of the East of Europe, the dismantling of the COMECON, as well as by the disintegration of the USSR and the detente in the international relationships. During the forty years that the COMECON was prevailing, that region centred its attention on the USSR, but nowadays the East looiks at the West, concretaly at the European Union and more exactly at Germany. The composition of the imports and exports reveals the marked dependence on Central and Eastern Eur…

Follow-up in transthyretin familial amyloid polyneuropathy: Useful investigations

2020

Patients with transthyretin amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) and asymptomatic mutation-carriers have to be regularly followed-up in order to identify disease progression and the time point for starting or modifying therapy. In this case series we describe the potential suitability of different variables as progression markers. We retrospectively analyzed the follow-up charts of 10 TTR-FAP patients. Clinical examination included the Neuropathy Impairment Score of Lower Limb (NIS-LL), temperature perception thresholds, nerve conduction and autonomic function tests. The NIS-LL had the greatest value for a sensitive and correct follow-up for all TTR-FAP stages. All other examinations provided u…
