Plastic foil technique attenuates inflammation in mesenteric intravital microscopy.
2000
Abstract Background. Interpretation of intravital microscopic observations is complicated by the “inflammatory”-type response to the trauma inflicted on the tissue by the surgical preparation. The present study evaluates different experimental conditions for prolonged observations of the mesenteric microcirculation in the rat. Methods. The mesentery was exteriorized through a median laparotomy and subjected to an organ bath or a modified plastic foil technique. Hemodynamic, metabolic, respiratory, and microcirculatory data were analyzed. Results. In contrast to the plastic foil technique, which yielded stable baseline values over a 5-h observation period, venular velocity and wall shear rat…
TRIB1 constitutes a molecular link between regulation of sleep and lipid metabolism in humans.
2012
Epidemiological studies show association between sleep duration and lipid metabolism. In addition, inactivation of circadian genes induces insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia. We hypothesized that sleep length and lipid metabolism are partially controlled by the same genes. We studied the association of total sleep time (TST) with 60 genetic variants that had previously been associated with lipids. The analyses were performed in a Finnish population-based sample (N = 6334) and replicated in 2189 twins. Finally, RNA expression from mononuclear leucocytes was measured in 10 healthy volunteers before and after sleep restriction. The genetic analysis identified two variants near TRIB1 gene th…
The spectrum of androgen excess disorders.
2006
A better understanding of the different phenotypes and of their endocrine and metabolic characteristics permits investigators to distinguish three main androgen excess disorders: classic polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), mild ovulatory PCOS, and idiopathic hyperandrogenism. These androgenic phenotypes differ more for the severity of the endocrine and metabolic alteration than for the etiopathogenetic mechanisms. The appearance of a particular androgenic phenotype is determined by a sum of genetic and environmental factors, but mostly by body weight.
High-accuracy mass measurements on neutron deficient neon isotopes
2005
International audience; The atomic masses of the short-lived nuclides 17Ne and 19Ne have been measured with the triple-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. The obtained mass excess for both nuclides deviates significantly from the literature value, in the case of 17Ne about 40 keV. The mass value of 17Ne can be applied for a test of the isobaric multiplet mass equation with respect to an isospin T = 3/2 quartet. In addition, both masses can contribute to the data analysis of collinear laser-spectroscopy experiments where mean-square nuclear-charge radii are determined.
Metal thin-film temperature sensor embedded in heat-sink for CPV cells characterization
2014
The efficiency of a photovoltaic cell is dependent on its temperature, for this reason an accurate measurement of this parameter is important to fully characterize the device and to optimize its performance. For CPV applications a significant heat flux is needed to remove excess heat from the cell towards a heat sink, making it difficult to derive the cell temperature. In fact, measurements performed directly between the cell and the heat-sink, by use of commercial bulk sensors, would produce a significant disturbance in the heat flow; on the other hand, a measurement performed out of the cell / heat sink axis would be subject to large uncertainties, due to the high radial temperature gradi…
Tertiary Chiral Nanostructures from C‐H∙∙∙F Directed Assembly of Chiroptical Superatoms
2021
Chiral hierarchical structures are universal in nature, whereas quite challenging to mimic in man-made synthesis. We report herein the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100% optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S -BINAPCuBH 4 (BINAP is 2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au 7 Ag 6 Cu 2 ( R - or S -BINAP) 3 (SCH 2 Ph) 6 ]SbF 6 nanoclusters in one-pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri-metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomer…
Application of the Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic Process in a Membrane Bioreactor for Excess Sludge Reduction
2017
The main goal of this study was the evaluation of the excess sludge reduction in a MBR for biological nitrogen removal (BNR) through the implementation of the Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic (OSA) process. For this purpose, a MBR pilot plant (42 L volume) was realized according to a pre-denitrification scheme. The whole experimentation was divided into two periods, named Period 1 and Period 2, respectively. In Period 1 the pilot plant was started-up and the excess sludge production was evaluated. In Period 2 the plant configuration was partially modified by inserting an anaerobic reactor into the return activated sludge (RAS) line to realize an OSA configuration. In Period 1, the Yobs resulted equa…
Biological minimization of excess sludge in a membrane bioreactor: Effect of plant configuration on sludge production, nutrient removal efficiency an…
2018
Abstract Excess sludge minimization was studied in a MBR with pre-denitrification scheme. Sludge minimization, nitrogen removal performance and membrane fouling tendency were investigated in two configurations, characterized by a different position of the sludge retention reactor (SRR). In particular, the SRR was placed: i) in the return activated sludge line (Anaerobic Side-Stream Reactor – ASSR configuration) and ii) in the mainstream between the anoxic and aerobic reactor (Anaerobic Main-Stream Reactor – AMSR configuration). The achieved results demonstrated that the ASSR enabled a higher excess sludge reduction (74% vs 32%), while achieving lower biological nitrogen removal (BNR) (TN = …
Iron regulatory mechanisms in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
2020
Iron is an essential micronutrient for all eukaryotic organisms because it participates as a redox cofactor in many cellular processes. However, excess iron can damage cells since it promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species. The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used as a model organism to study the adaptation of eukaryotic cells to changes in iron availability. Upon iron deficiency, yeast utilizes two transcription factors, Aft1 and Aft2, to activate the expression of a set of genes known as the iron regulon, which are implicated in iron uptake, recycling and mobilization. Moreover, Aft1 and Aft2 activate the expression of Cth2, an mRNA-binding protein that limits t…
