Expenditure on public services in the countries of the European Union. Determinants of fiscal policy and public governance
2018
The aim of the article is to present the General Government expenditure on public services in the European Union countries, including selected aspects of fiscal policy and public governance. In order to achieve this aim, the varius research methods are used. The data used in the study comes from the following databases: Eurostat, OECD, PORDATA. The survey covers the period of 2007–2016. We note that expenditure on public services is an important determinant of fiscal policy and public governance. The originality of the analysis presented in the article is intended to emphasize the importance of GG spending on public services such as health and education spending in the socio-economic develo…
The Speed of Incorporating Information into Prices
2013
Abstract To determine the speed of adjusting asset prices to the latest market information, investors usually resort to semi-strong form efficiency tests. Semi-strong form efficiency is based on the assumption that stock prices adjust rapidly as a result of new public information. The objective of the event study conducted in this paper was to examine whether new information is incorporated into the share price in a single price change after its public distribution. We analyzed the price behaviour of companies listed under Category I of the Bucharest Stock Exchange around events such interim result announcements between June and November 2012.
Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Physical Activity following Lung Transplantation: A National Cohort Study
2020
<b><i>Background:</i></b> Low cardiorespiratory fitness and inactivity are common after lung transplantation (LTx). The causes of exercise intolerance are incompletely understood. <b><i>Objectives:</i></b> The aim of this study was to objectively assess cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity, evaluate causes of exercise intolerance, and explore clinical factors associated with cardiorespiratory fitness after bilateral LTx (BLTx). <b><i>Materials and Methods:</i></b> Peak oxygen uptake (V<b>∙</b>O2peak) and exercise-limiting factors were evaluated by a treadmill cardiopulmonary…
Differences in cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular responses between voluntary and stimulated contractions of the quadriceps femoris muscle.
2006
The aim of this study was to compare respiratory gas exchange variables and muscle fatigue between equal-intensity (i.e., same force output) electrostimulated and voluntary contractions of the quadriceps muscle (46+/-10% of maximal voluntary force). Twelve healthy men served as volunteers. Oxygen consumption, ventilation and respiratory exchange ratio were recorded during the exercise bouts. Muscle fatigue was quantified as the exercise-induced reduction in maximal voluntary force. The average oxygen consumption (11+/-3 versus 8+/-2 mL min(-1)kg(-1)), ventilation (23+/-4 versus 16+/-2 L min(-1)) and respiratory exchange ratio (0.96+/-0.02 versus 0.85+/-0.01) were significantly higher during…
Alveolar gas exchange and tissue deoxygenation during exercise in type 1 diabetes patients and healthy controls.
2012
We used near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate whether leg and arm skeletal muscle and cerebral deoxygenation differ during incremental cycling exercise in men with type 1 diabetes (T1D, n=10, mean±SD age 33±7 years) and healthy control men (matched by age, anthrometry, and self-reported physical activity, CON, n=10, 32±7 years) to seek an explanation for lower aerobic capacity (˙VO2peak) often reported in T1D. T1D had lower ˙VO2peak (35±4mlkg(-1)min(-1) vs. 43±8mlkg(-1)min(-1), P0.01) and peak work rate (219±33W vs. 290±44W, P0.001) than CON. Leg muscle deoxygenation (↑ [deoxyhemoglobin]; ↓ tissue saturation index) was greater in T1D than CON at a given absolute submaximal work rate, bu…
Inhaled iloprost to control residual pulmonary hypertension following pulmonary endarterectomy.
2005
Objective: Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the standard therapy for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). In the immediate postoperative period, persistent pulmonary hypertension increases the risk of acute respiratory or right heart failure. In pulmonary arterial hypertension, prostanoid inhalation has been found to improve pulmonary hemodynamics, right ventricular function, gas exchange, and clinical outcome. We report the results of a double-blinded randomized trial with the aerosolized prostacyclin analogue iloprost in patients with residual pulmonary hypertension after PEA. Methods: Twenty-two patients (age, 55 13 years; 8 females; propofol- and sufen…
Analysis of atelectasis, ventilated, and hyperinflated lung during mechanical ventilation by dynamic CT.
2005
Study objective: To study the dynamics of lung compartments by dynamic CT (dCT) imaging during uninterrupted pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) and different positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) settings in healthy and damaged lungs. Design: Experimental animal investigation. Setting: Experimental animal facility of a university department. Interventions: In seven anesthetized pigs, static inspiratory pressure volume curves were obtained to identify the individual lower inflection point (LIP) before and after saline solution lung lavage. During PCV, PEEP was adjusted 5 millibars (mbar) below the individually determined LIP (LIP - 5), at the LIP, and 5 mbar above the LIP (LIP + 5). Mea…
The respiratory gas values of the fetal and maternal blood in cartesian nomograms
1966
Respiratory gas values of maternal and fetal blood taken at delivery are represented in two Cartesian nomograms. They are based on data, published by vogel, fischer und thews (1965) and Fischer, Vogel und Thews (1965). The nomograms depict the interdependence of O2 pressure, O2 content, CO2 pressure and CO2 content, established by the O2 and CO2 dissociation curves, as well as by the Bohr effect and the Haldane effect. If two of the values are known, the remaining ones can be read from the nomograms.
Near-normal aerobic capacity in long-term survivors after lung transplantation
2021
The clinical course of lung transplantation (LT) is diverse: some patients present chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and progressive decline in pulmonary function, but others maintain normal spirometric values and active lives. Objectives The aim of this study was to elucidate whether long-term LT survivors with normal spirometry achieve normal exercise capacity, and to identify predictive factors of exercise capacity. Methods This was a cross-sectional multicentre study, where bilateral LT recipients who survived at least 10 years after LT, with normal spirometry, no diagnosis of CLAD and modified Medical Research Council dyspnoea degree ≤2 underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testin…
