The paper concerns the mechanisms underlying the distribution of the bed shear stress in meandering bends. Literature indicates that cross-stream circulation strongly affects the redistribution of the downstream velocity, but the feedback between them is still poorly understood. The aim of this paper is to gain some insight into how the momentum transport by cross-stream circulation contributes to the bed shear stress redistribution. Mechanical Characterization of Polymers on a Nanometer Scale through Nanoindentation. A Study on Pile-up and Viscoelasticity

The analysis of nanoindentation force curves collected on polymers through the common Oliver and Pharr procedure does not lead to a correct evaluation of Young’s modulus. In particular, the estimated elastic modulus is several times larger than the correct one, thus compromising the possibility of a nanomechanical characterization of polymers. Pile-up or viscoelasticity is usually blamed for this failure, and a deep analysis of their influences is attempted in this work. Piling-up can be minimized by indenting on a true nanometer scale, i.e., at penetration depth smaller than 200 nm. Line mixing in the ν1 and 2ν2 isotropic Raman Q-branch of CO2 perturbed by argon and helium

0021-9606; The shapes of the ν1 and 2ν2 isotropic Raman Q-branch of CO2 perturbed by argon and helium have been measured by Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy (SRS) or coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) techniques. The data have been successfully analyzed with an energy corrected sudden (ECS) approximation model based on basic rates determined independently. Finally comparison of the present data with time resolved double resonance experiments allows us to discuss the physical origin of the two empirical constants which account for the shift and broadening of the branch due to vibrational effects. In situ study of the sintering of a lead phosphovanadate in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope

cited By 3; International audience; The in situ sintering of a powder of Pb3(VO4) 1.6(PO4)0.4 composition was performed in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. The electric current induced by the electron beam was found to reduce the effective temperature of sintering as well as to accelerate the kinetics of shrinkage of a cluster composed of sub-micrometric grains of material. The presence of the residual current flow in the cluster during observation for in situ experiments helps to reduce the apparent sintering temperatures from 50 to 150 °C compared to conventional heating conditions without current. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. AbstractCompetition between groups is ubiquitous in social and economic life, and typically occurs between groups that are not created equal. Here we experimentally investigate the implications of this general observation on the unfolding of symmetric and asymmetric competition between groups that are either homogeneous or heterogeneous in the ability of their members to contribute to the success of the group. [EN] We present a model based on activities for the acquisition of essential competences of the scientific-technical qualifications, developed throughout the course of Cell Biology of the 1st year of the Degree in Biotechnology. For example, the search and analysis of bibliographic information and the design and interpretation of experiments are closely related and very important competences in the training of the biotechnologist, however they are not well contemplated in a specific way in the study plans. The proposed activities, designed under the premises of the constructive alignment of Biggs and Tang, develop these competences jointly and within the framework of a single subject.
Touchless gestural interfaces for networked public displays

In the near future, we can easily imagine a significant increment in diffusion of networked public displays, as well as novel interaction modalities used in their applications. In the following, we present two of the main challenges related to networked displays we are dealing with, with a particular focus on touchless gestural interfaces: overcoming interaction blindness (i.e. enable users to immediately guess the interactivity of the display, and the gestural nature of it) and performing evaluations in-the-wild (i.e. outside any controlled environment).
