Where do food likes and dislikes come from?

2020

Where do food likes and dislikes come from ? In other words, what are the factors that could explain why someone likes or dislikes a given food ? Most of the hedonic reactions to sensory stimulations brought by foods and, as a result reactions to foods carrying these sensory properties are learned through different learning mechanisms. The efficiency of these learning mechanisms mat depend on individual characteristics, in particular on the sensitivity to different sensory properties. Not all learnings are related to experiments with the food itself; many leamings depend on interactions within the family or social environment. Finally, cognitive determinants play also a role and, in particu…

Nuclear entry and egress of parvoviruses.

2022

Parvoviruses are small non-enveloped single-stranded DNA viruses, which depend on host cell nuclear transcriptional and replication machinery. After endosomal exposure of nuclear localization sequence and a phospholipase A2 domain on the capsid surface, and escape into the cytosol, parvovirus capsids enter the nucleus. Due to the small capsid diameter of 18–26 nm, intact capsids can potentially pass into the nucleus through nuclear pore complexes (NPCs). This might be facilitated by active nuclear import, but capsids may also follow an alternative entry pathway that includes activation of mitotic factors and local transient disruption of the nuclear envelope. The nuclear entry is followed b…

The dynamics of Italian competitive positioning in the Mediterranean Bluefin tuna industry

2020

The bluefin tuna or Thunnus thynnus is one of the widely recognised fish species since ancient times. Italy is the most important players in the international arena, however, the introduction of a system of total allowable catches and other measures established by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, has deeply changed the competitive positioning of Italy. The aim of this study is to perform an analysis of the comparative advantage of Italy by using the relative trade advantage index. Findings reveal that Italy has gained a competitive advantage in the Maltese market and has suffered a loss of the historical competitive advantage in the Japanese one. Results …

Topics on firms´ estrategic desicions in a developing country: the case of manufacturing in Colombia

2020

Quantification of cadmium-induced metallothionein in crustaceans by the silver-saturation method

1995

Metallothionein (MT) has been proposed as a specific biochemical probe for metal exposure of aquatic organisms. It is recognized that its usefulness as a monitoring tool depends on the full understanding of its function and on the possibility of measuring its concentration in tissues. Therefore the study of MT in crustaceans is interesting from two different points of view: the need to understand mechanisms associated with the toxicology of metals, and the potential use of this protein for monitoring metal-contamined environments. Several methods have been developed for quantitative measurements of MT in biological samples. Immunochemical and electrochemical procedures are reliable techniqu…

Long-term memories of developed and emerging markets: Using the scaling analysis to characterize their stage of development

2005

The scaling properties encompass in a simple analysis many of the volatility characteristics of financial markets. That is why we use them to probe the different degree of markets development. We empirically study the scaling properties of daily Foreign Exchange rates, Stock Market indices and fixed income instruments by using the generalized Hurst approach. We show that the scaling exponents are associated with characteristics of the specific markets and can be used to differentiate markets in their stage of development. The robustness of the results is tested by both Monte-Carlo studies and a computation of the scaling in the frequency-domain.
