Two Half-Truths Make a Whole? On Bias in Self-Reports and Tracking Data
2019
The pervasive use of mobile information technologies brings new patterns of media usage, but also challenges to the measurement of media exposure. Researchers wishing to, for example, understand the nature of selective exposure on algorithmically driven platforms need to precisely attribute individuals’ exposure to specific content. Prior research has used tracking data to show that survey-based self-reports of media exposure are critically unreliable. So far, however, little effort has been invested into assessing the specific biases of tracking methods themselves. Using data from a multimethod study, we show that tracking data from mobile devices is linked to systematic distortions in sel…

Critical behavior of short range Potts glasses
1993
We study by means of Monte Carlo simulations and the numerical transfer matrix technique the critical behavior of the short rangep=3 state Potts glass model in dimensionsd=2,3,4 with both Gaussian and bimodal (±J) nearest neighbor interactions on hypercubic lattices employing finite size scaling ideas. Ind=2 in addition the degeneracy of the glass ground state is computed as a function of the number of Potts states forp=3, 4, 5 and compared to that of the antiferromagnetic ground state. Our data indicate a transition into a glass phase atT=0 ind=2 with an algebraic singularity, aT=0 transition ind=3 with an essential singularity of the form χ∼exp(const.T−2), and an algebraic singularity atT…
Exponential smoothing with covariates applied to electricity demand forecast
2013
Exponential smoothing methods are widely used as forecasting techniques in industry and business. Their usual formulation, however, does not allow covariates to be used for introducing extra information into the forecasting process. In this paper, we analyse an extension of the exponential smoothing formulation that allows the use of covariates and the joint estimation of all the unknowns in the model, which improves the forecasting results. The whole procedure is detailed with a real example on forecasting the daily demand for electricity in Spain. The time series of daily electricity demand contains two seasonal patterns: here the within-week seasonal cycle is modelled as usual in exponen…
The Impact of Barriers on Export Behavior of a Developing Country Firms: Evidence from Tanzania
2012
The purpose of this paper is to identify main export barriers and to test empirically their impact on export behavior. A survey of 122 manufacturing firms was conducted in Tanzania between October 2008 and February 2009. The survey data were analyzed using factor analysis and the Tobit regression model. Factor analysis identified five significant barrier factors: lack of export market knowledge and information, export supply capacity constraints, inadequate export financing, inefficient regulatory framework, and poor infrastructure. The impact of the barriers on export behavior was then tested using the Tobit regression model. The results of the Tobit estimation indicated that the lack of e…
Exhalation of ethylene oxide by rats on exposure to ethylene.
1983
Abstract When rats are exposed to ethylene in a closed desiccator jar chamber, the rate of metabolic elimination of the compound is influenced by pretreatment with Aroclor 1254 (metabolism increased) and diethyldithiocarbamate (metabolism inhibited). Biotransformation of ethylene leads to ethylene oxide as reactive intermediate. This is exhaled and can be quantitated in the gas phase of the system.
Detection of primary DNA damage: applicability to biomonitoring of genotoxic occupational exposure and in clinical therapy
1995
The biological effect of putative genotoxic chemicals in the work place environment was monitored in peripheral mononuclear blood cells of exposed workers. DNA strand breaks, alkali-labile sites of DNA and DNA cross-links were measured using the alkaline filter elution method. A dose dependent increase in DNA damage was found in sterilization workers exposed to ethylene oxide and metal workers with exposure towards N-nitrosodiethanolamine. Two subpopulations with different response to the external exposure were found in nonsmoking sterilization workers. Nurses handling antineo-plastic agents without adequate safety provisions showed a statistically significantly higher rate of DNA strand br…
2013
Several European cities have based their development and their international promotion on culture as an instrument for urban renewal. In Spain the experience of Zaragoza is polymorphic and projects itself into the future thanks to the different proposals, which it aims to realise, as well as to the scale of the projects in the territory. After the Expo 2008, Zaragoza distinguished itself by its dynamic activity in the recent candidatures aimed to organise new international events. Indeed the city through the events aspires to reinforce its role as a event city at national and international level. It undertakes to complete the diverse projects included in the Strategic Plan, which supported …
Export Price Discrimination in Europe and Exchange Rates
2002
The paper studies pricing-to-market behavior on a wide range of disaggregated European Union exports to OECD countries. The sample allows better identification of products for which such behavior is pervasive. The results suggest that the degree of markup adjustment in response to exchange rate changes is similar across destination markets. The evidence of pricing-to-market across source countries ranges from 40% (Netherlands) to 63% (Germany) of the products in the sample, except for the United Kingdom, where there is remarkably little evidence of it. However, formal comparisons across source countries by product do not usually reveal differences in behavior.
