Maternal overnutrition programs hedonic and metabolic phenotypes across generations through sperm tsRNAs
2019
There is a growing body of evidence linking maternal overnutri-tion to obesity and psychopathology that can be conserved acrossmultiple generations. Recently, we demonstrated in a maternalhigh-fat diet (HFD; MHFD) mouse model that MHFD inducedenhanced hedonic behaviors and obesogenic phenotypes thatwere conserved across three generations via the paternal lineage, which was independent of sperm methylome changes. Here, weshow that sperm tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) partly contrib-ute to the transmission of such phenotypes. We observe increasedexpression of sperm tsRNAs in the F1 male offspring born to HFD-exposed dams. Microinjection of sperm tsRNAs from the F1-HFDmale into normal zygotes…
Physical heaviness of work and sitting at work as predictors of mortality : a 26-year follow-up of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study
2019
ObjectivesTo examine the relationships of late-career physical heaviness of work and sitting at work with mortality. A national-level job exposure matrix was used to determine the occupation-specific level of physical heaviness and sitting.DesignProspective cohort study between years 1990 and 2015.SettingCommunity.Participants5210 men and 4725 women from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study with an occupational code at baseline (ages 45–57 years).Primary and secondary outcome measuresTotal, cardiovascular (International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision I00–I99), cancer (C00–C97) and external (S00–Y84) mortality.ResultsThe exposures, physical heaviness and sitting had a non-linear, invers…
Complications associated with submental liposuction: a scoping review
2021
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures worldwide. Complications associated with submental liposuction are rare. However, when they occur they are significant and can cause disFiguring consequences. The objective of this study was evaluated complications from submentual liposuction in literature and description of clinical experience of complication after submentual liposuction. At first, a scoping review was carried out online search with no time restrictions for complications after submental liposuction was performed in the databases Medline / PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. The variables analyzed were: age, sex, type of esthetic procedure, anesthesia, co…
Clinical features and lifestyle of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Campania: brief overview of an Italian database
2012
Background. Physical activity and occupational exposures appeared to play a relevant role in pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease of unknown origin. Materials and methods. We aimed to make an overview of the clinical characteristics and life - style (occupation and sport) of a population of 395 patients with ALS from campania, in southern Italy. Results. ALS onset resulted anticipated of about 11 years in industry workers, whilst the more frequent site of onset among farmers was upper limbs. compared to non-athletes, athletes, particu- larly soccer players, showed a 7 years anticipation of ALS onset, with higher mortality after 5 years. Discussion…
In vivo versus augmented reality exposure in the treatment of small animal phobia: A randomized controlled trial
2016
Although in vivo exposure is the treatment of choice for specific phobias, some acceptability problems have been associated with it. Virtual Reality exposure has been shown to be as effective as in vivo exposure, and it is widely accepted for the treatment of specific phobias, but only preliminary data are available in the literature about the efficacy of Augmented Reality. The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy and acceptance of two treatment conditions for specific phobias in which the exposure component was applied in different ways: In vivo exposure (N = 31) versus an Augmented Reality system (N = 32) in a randomized controlled trial. “One-session treatment” guidel…
Photo-oxidation behaviour of polyethylene/multi-wall carbon nanotube composite films
2009
Abstract The resistance to accelerated photo-oxidation of polyethylene/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MW-CNTs) composite films was compared with the photo-oxidation behaviour of pristine polyethylene film. The polyethylene/MW-CNTs films containing different CNTs loading were subjected to accelerated UV-B exposure. At short exposure time, i.e. under 200 h, the rates of carbonyl formation are very similar to that observed for pristine polyethylene film but at longer irradiation times the carbonyl formation increases for lower MW-CNTs contents (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5% wt./wt.), and decreases for higher MW-CNTs contents (1 and 2% wt./wt.). By adding a UV-stabilizer to the films their photo-oxidation …
FERROELECTRIC LIQUID CRYSTAL GLASSES FOR AMBLYOPIA RESEARCH
2008
ABSTRACT Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) filters offer the speed of electronic light shutters and the vibration free operation. These characteristics make them ideal for applications requiring short exposure times and minimal blur, offering switching times of 0.0002 of a second. FLC filters can be used as the optical shutters for machine vision purposes, also in vision research. On the basis of FLC filters we have developed ferroelectric glasses, allowing temporal separation of optical information for both eyes. In the case of amblyopia (“lazy eye”) the only way to oblige the “lazy” eye to work is to close the other better-seeing eye. We advice an appliance for dynamic visual system trai…
Photoluminescence of Point Defects in Silicon Dioxide by Femtosecond Laser Exposure
2021
The nature of the radiation-induced point defects in amorphous silica is investigated through online photoluminescence (PL) under high intensity ultrashort laser pulses. Using 1030 nm femtosecond laser pulses with a repetition rate of 1 kHz, it is possible to study the induced color centers through their PL signatures monitored during the laser exposure. Their generation is driven by the nonlinear absorption of the light related to the high pulse peak powers provided by femtosecond laser, allowing to probe the optical properties of the laser exposed region. The experiment is conducted as a function of the laser pulse power in samples with different OH contents. The results highlight the dif…
Strain-dependent electrical resistance of epoxy/MWCNT composite after hydrothermal aging
2015
Abstract The electrical resistance of epoxy/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites was studied under the effect of hygro- and hydrothermal aging. Tensile tests were conducted and the responses in the electrical resistance were measured during the tests for samples with different prehistory of environmental exposure. The overall pattern of the electrical resistance change versus strain for the samples tested consists of linear and nonlinear regions with a broad peak that precedes the ultimate strength of the sample and occurs at the onset of evident plastic deformation in the stress–strain curve. The composite with lower content of MWCNTs exhibits a more pronounced nonlinear behavior …
Fluorescence spectroscopy for estimation of anticancer drug sonodestruction in vitro
2013
The effect of ultrasound exposure on bleomycin fluorescence and pharmacological properties is studied. Bleomycin was treated by ultrasound for 7 min. Bleomycin fluorescence was measured during ultrasound exposure by means of fiber-optic spectrometry. Cell colony test was used to evaluate blemycin cytotoxity before and after ultrasound exposure.
