Bacteria, fungi and arthropod pests collected on modern human mummies

2011

A survey of opportunistic biocenosis (macro and micro organisms) associated with a rest of human mummy samples was carried out to characterise the biocenosis and to detect the potential of biodeteriogens. The rests of the human modern mummies come from a hypogeic site. Since mummies are relevant from a historic-artistic-scientific point of view, an aspect of this study was the identification and characterization of the biological systems related with biodeterioration of organic matter. In a first step, different sampling methods, according to the taxa, were applied. Technological procedures were combined in order to have an interdisciplinary approach to the conservation actions for testing …

Molecular tools to assess the diversity and density of denitrifying bacteria in their habitats

2007

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the molecular tools to assess the diversity and density of denitrifying bacteria in their habitats. Genome sequencing and metagenomic projects might even provide new denitrification gene sequences, which could aid in designing more broad range primers. Most information is obtained by cloning and sequencing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicons, but a more rapid analysis is achieved using fingerprinting techniques. As all PCR-based analyses, the fingerprinting techniques are subjected to well-known biases introduced by, e.g., DNA extraction procedures, primer selection, and PCR conditions. For denitrifiers, the PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment l…

Building capabilities among e-scrappers in informal electronic waste management: the case of the Nigerian e-scrappers

2016

This study examines the capabilities of e-scrappers developed through the constant interaction with electronic waste (e-waste). Video-based interviews were conducted with 29 male e-scrappers in Edo and Lagos States, Nigeria. Data analysis reveals that over time, e-scrappers in Nigeria are driven by aspirations not only of financial security but also of societal acceptance and recognition. Progressively, they have developed capabilities such as effective extraction methods based on individual abilities, market demand and the presence of an active social network, which have had a significant impact on the choices of the developed capabilities.

Autoencoders and Recurrent Neural Networks Based Algorithm for Prognosis of Bearing Life

2018

Bearings are one of the most critical components in electric motors, gearboxes and wind turbines. Therefore, bearing fault detection and prognosis of remaining useful life are important to prevent productivity losses. In this study, a novel method is proposed for prognosis of bearing life using an autoencoder and recurrent neural networks-based prediction algorithm. Promising results have been obtained from the experimental data. A monotonic upward trend of the produced health indicator is obtained for all test cases, being one of critical indicators of a proper prognosis. The remaining useful life estimation is moderately accurate under a limited data.

Autoencoders and Data Fusion Based Hybrid Health Indicator for Detecting Bearing and Stator Winding Faults in Electric Motors

2018

The main objective of a condition monitoring programs is to track the health status of critical components of a machine. In this paper, a hybrid health indicator is proposed to monitor the health status of bearings and stator winding of a motor. The proposed method is based on a feature learning from deep autoencoders and data fusion. The features can be learned by autoencoders using individual current and vibration signals, and then learning features are fused to make final health indicators. The experimental data from a permanent magnet synchronous motor is used to validate the proposed method. Promising results in detecting faults and severities of the stator and bearing faults at differ…

Detection of Ventricular Fibrillation Using the Image from Time-Frequency Representation and Combined Classifiers without Feature Extraction

2018

Due the fact that the required therapy to treat Ventricular Fibrillation (V F) is aggressive (electric shock), the lack of a proper detection and recovering therapy could cause serious injuries to the patient or trigger a ventricular fibrillation, or even death. This work describes the development of an automatic diagnostic system for the detection of the occurrence of V F in real time by means of the time-frequency representation (T F R) image of the ECG. The main novelties are the use of the T F R image as input for a classification process, as well as the use of combined classifiers. The feature extraction stage is eliminated and, together with the use of specialized binary classifiers, …

New approaches for the effective valorization of papaya seeds: Extraction of proteins, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, and isothiocyanates assiste…

2015

Abstract The study compares the efficiency of common aqueous extraction (CE) at different pH (2.5–11) and temperatures (20–60 °C) and extraction assisted by pulsed electric energy (pulsed electric fields, PEF or high voltage electrical discharges, HVED) of nutritionally valuable and antioxidant compounds from papaya seeds. The exponential decay pulses with initial electric field strengths of ≈ 13.3 kV/cm and ≈ 40 kV/cm for PEF and HVED treatments, respectively, were used. The number of pulses n was changed within 1–2000. The impacts of temperature and pH on extraction efficiency of different components (proteins, total phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, isothiocyanates) and antioxidant capa…

Electro-biorefinery as a Potential Tool for Valorization of Mango and Papaya By-products

2016

During exotic fruits processing, a large amount of by-products, especially seeds and peels, are produced and discarded into the environment causing organic pollution. However, it is recognized that these by-products are a good source of high-added value compounds, which can be used for different purposes (i.e. food additives and/or nutraceuticals). At this stage of development, there is a lack of information about the different extraction methods that can be used for the recovery of high-added value compounds from papaya and mango by-products. In this line, the extraction assisted by pulsed electric technologies seems to be rather promising. In this research study, the exponential decay pul…

Impact of pulsed electric fields and high voltage electrical discharges on extraction of high-added value compounds from papaya peels

2014

Abstract Extraction of the nutritionally valuable and antioxidant compounds from papaya peels using conventional aqueous extraction (E) (at 20 °C, 50 °C, and 60 °C) and extraction assisted by pulsed electric field (PEF) or by high voltage electrical discharges (HVED) was studied. Increase of extraction temperature or extraction in basic media (pH = 11) not always resulted in an increase of the yields or TEAC values. E.g., the concentration of proteins and TEAC values at pH = 7 and pH = 11 were noticeably smaller at 60 °C as compared to those measured at 50 °C. HVED-assisted technique showed a higher extraction efficiency of high-added value compounds compared to PEF-assisted extraction. E.g…

Analysis of fumonisins B1, B2 and B3 in corn-based baby food by pressurized liquid extraction and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry

2008

A sensitive and reliable method using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography (LC)/electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry with a triple quadrupole (QqQ) analyzer has been developed for the analysis of fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)), fumonisin B(2) (FB(2)) and fumonisin B(3) (FB(3)) in corn-based baby foods. Influence of several extraction parameters that affect PLE efficiency such as temperature, pressure, solvent extraction, number of cycles and dispersant/clean-up agents were studied. The selected PLE operating method was: 3g of sample was packed into 11 ml stainless-steel cell and fumonisins were extracted with methanol at 40 degrees C, 34 atm in one cycle o…
