Role of Ocular Angiogenic Factors in the Development of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration

2020

Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive degenerative eye disease. Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is the advanced form of AMD characterised by abnormal growth of newly formed blood vessels in chorioidea which typically involves fluid accumulation in the retina or retinal haemorrhage, retinal epithelial detachments, hard exudate or subretinal scars. The process of angiogenesis is controlled by ocular angiogenic factors, which have enabled the development of different treatment options aimed at these factors. This review aims to compile the available information about the most commonly identified ocular angiogenic factors, uncovering their role in …

The Role of Adrenoceptors in the Retina

2020

The retina is a part of the central nervous system, a thin multilayer with neuronal lamination, responsible for detecting, preprocessing, and sending visual information to the brain. Many retinal diseases are characterized by hemodynamic perturbations and neurodegeneration leading to vision loss and reduced quality of life. Since catecholamines and respective bindings sites have been characterized in the retina, we systematically reviewed the literature with regard to retinal expression, distribution and function of alpha1 (α1)-, alpha2 (α2)-, and beta (β)-adrenoceptors (ARs). Moreover, we discuss the role of the individual adrenoceptors as targets for the treatment of retinal diseases.

zHSF1 modulates zper2 expression in zebrafish embryos

2018

International audience; HSF1 is a transcription factor that plays a key role in circadian resetting by temperature. We have used zebrafish embryos to decipher the roles of zHsf1, heat and light on zper2 transcription in vivo. Our results show that heat shock (HS) stimulated zper2 expression in the dark but has no cumulative effect combined with light. After light exposition, zper2 expression was 2.7 fold increased threefold in the hsf1-morphants in comparison to control embryos. Our results show that zHsf1 plays a positive role in HS-driven expression of zper2 in the dark but seems to act as an attenuator in the presence light.

The best way to assess visually induced motion sickness in a fixed-base driving simulator

2017

Abstract Objective Driving simulator usage is becoming more widespread, yet many users still experience substantial motion sickness-like symptoms induced by optical flow, called visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). The Fast Motion sickness Scale (FMS) allows for continuous on-line assessment of VIMS. Using mixed models for ordinal data, this study investigated how to optimally analyze FMS data, and then used the resulting models to examine the development of symptoms over time in detail. Additionally, the study explored the impact of specific VIMS-inducing road elements. Methods Twenty-eight healthy young adults without prior simulator experience completed six courses on two days in a f…

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction and co-localization of novel interacting proteins with the Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) associated protein aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein-like 1 (AIPL1). Methods: The CytoTrapXR yeast two-hybrid system was used to screen a bovine retinal cDNA library. A novel interaction between AIPL1 and members of the family of EB proteins was confirmed by directed yeast two-hybrid analysis and co-immunoprecipitation assays. The localization of AIPL1 and the EB proteins in cultured cells and in retinal cryosections was examined by immunofluorescence microscopy and cryo-immunogold electron microscopy. Results: Yeast two-hy…

Normal values for fundus perimetry with the MAIA microperimeter and short-term repeatability evaluation

2016

National audience; Purpose To assess retinal sensitivity by means of microperimetry and to evaluate the intersession fluctuation using the MAIA microperimeter in healthy volunteers. Methods Prospective, monocentre study. Fifty‐six healthy volunteers (age range, 20–80 years), underwent an automatic, full‐threshold microperimetry of the central field (custom grid, area of 10° in diameter, 37 stimulated points), with the MAIA microperimeter (CenterVue, Padova, Italy). A subgroup of 24 subjects was retested after 1 h (test 2) and 1 week (test 3) to determine the repeatability of the technique. A subgroup of 22 subjects was also tested on the OPKO microperimeter (Optos, Dunfermline, Scotland) (a…

Eye-tracking revision processes of translation students and professional translators

2019

Great effort has been made to define and to measure revision competence in translation. However, combined eye tracking and keylogging have hardly been applied in revision research. We believe it is...

‘Monitoring’ in translation

2019

Abstract We assume that visual feedback from the written trace during translation plays an important role in monitoring the emerging translation. In this study, 44 participants translated with and without visual feedback from the target text (TT). Numerous measures were used to explore the differences between the texts that were created in the two conditions and the characteristics of the task performance in the two conditions. The impact of ST-TT semantic and syntactic relationships showed that there were differences on two of three behavioural measures across conditions. In the comparison of features of the translation process, findings show that ST reading times were longer without visua…

Measuring stress in clinical and nonclinical subjects using a German adaptation of the Perceived Stress Scale

2020
