Cognitive function in patients with neuroborreliosis: A prospective cohort study from the acute phase to 12 months post treatment
2022
Background Long-term cognitive problems after neuroborreliosis treatment remain a subject of debate. We have previously shown that cognitive problems are not present in the acute phase of neuroborreliosis, although fatigue is common. The aim of this study was to re-assess the same patient cohort and evaluate long-term outcomes. Methods In this follow-up, we re-assessed 58 patients with well-characterized neuroborreliosis 12 months after completing treatment. The same protocol with eight subtests measuring attention and processing speed and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) were used to compare the results from the acute phase to 12 months post treatment. Results We found no changes in attent…
Membrane fatty acid composition and fluidity are involved in the resistance to freezing of Lactobacillus buchneri R1102 and Bifidobacterium longum R0…
2015
International audience; Determinations of membrane fatty acid composition and fluidity were used together with acidification activity and viability measurements to characterize the physiological state after freezing of Lactobacillus buchneri R1102 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 cells harvested in the exponential and stationary growth phases. For both strains, lower membrane fluidity was achieved in cells harvested in the stationary growth phase. This change was linked to a lower unsaturated-to-saturated fatty acid ratio for both strains and a higher cyclic-to-saturated fatty acid ratio for L. buchneri R1102 alone. These membrane properties were linked to survival and to maintenance of aci…
Calorimetric and viscosimetric investigation of the interaction between α,β-polyasparthydrazide and sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles
1993
Abstract The interaction between α,β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles in aqueous solution was investigated by calorimetry and viscosimetry. The dependence of the enthalpic effect due to this interaction upon the surfactant concentration was rationalized in terms of a progressive binding of SDS micelles to the polymeric backbone. The analysis of the calorimetric data allow evaluation of the binding ability of SDS micelles to the polymeric chain. The viscosimetric behavior of SDS plus PAHy aqueous solutions, discussed in terms of the parameter F [F = ηrel(PAHy) + ηrel(PAHy) − ηrel(SDS+PAHy)], confirms the occurence of the interaction between SDS micelles an…

The effect of spent bleaching earth ageing process on its physicochemical and microbial composition and its potential use as a source of fatty acids …
2014
This study was aimed at investigating the physicochemical and microbiological changes that took place during the ageing process of spent bleaching earth in the presence of autochthonous microorganisms. Research material included fresh spent bleaching earth (SBE0) and the same material after 3 years of storage at the constant temperature of 20 °C, without aeration and moistening (SBE3). Changes in the chemical composition of analysed waste material were observed during its ageing process point to a spontaneous bioconversion of fat substance towards formation and/or release of free saturated fatty acids C16:0 and C18:0 (14.3 g 100 g(-1) D.M.), triterpenes (8.48 g 100 g(-1) D.M.), cholesterol …

Interesterification of rapeseed oil catalyzed by tin octoate
2014
The interesterification of rapeseed oil was performed for the first time by using tin octoate as Lewis acid homogeneous catalysts and methyl or ethyl acetate as acyl acceptors in a batch reactor, within the temperature range 393–483 K. The yields in fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) and triacetin (TA) after 20 h of reaction time increased from 8% and 2%–to 61% and 22%, respectively, when the reaction temperature increased from 423 to 483 K. An optimum value of 40 for the acyl acceptor to oil molar ratio was found to be necessary to match good fatty acid alkyl ester yields with high enough reaction rate. The rate of generation of esters was significantly higher when methyl acetate was used as a…
The effects of ultrasonication, fermentation with Lactobacillus sp., and dehydration on the chemical composition and microbial contamination of bovin…
2018
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of ultrasonication, fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum LUHS135 and Lactobacillus paracasei LUHS244, and different methods of dehydration on the chemical composition of bovine colostrum (BC), including the fatty acid and free amino acid profile and the content of micro- and macroelements. In addition, we analyzed the changes in lactic acid bacteria count, microbial contamination (aerobic mesophilic spore-forming bacteria, enterobacteria including Escherichia coli, and fungi/yeasts), the abundance of biogenic amines, and the concentration of nucleotide monophosphates. Significant effects of different treatments on the free amino acid …
Interspecies interactions mediated by conductive minerals in the sediments of the ferruginous Lake La Cruz, Spain
2018
AbstractLake La Cruz is considered a biogeochemical analogue to early Earth marine environments because its water column is depleted in sulfate, but rich in methane and iron, similar to conditions envisaged for much of the Precambrian. In this early Earth analogue environment, we show that conductive particles establish a tight metabolic coupling between electroactive microbial clades. We propose that mineral-based syntrophy is of potential relevance for the evolution of Earth’s earliest complex life forms. We show that the anoxic sediment of Lake La Cruz, which is rich in biogeochemically ‘reactive’ iron minerals, harbors known electroactive species such asGeobacterandMethanothrix,in addit…
