The primary volcanic aerosol emission from Mt Etna: Size-resolved particles with SO2 and role in plume reactive halogen chemistry

International audience; Volcanoes are an important source of aerosols to the troposphere. Within minutes after emission, volcanic plume aerosol catalyses conversion of co-emitted HBr, HCl into highly reactive halogens (e.g. BrO, OClO) through chemical cycles that cause substantial ozone depletion in the dispersing downwind plume.This study quantifies the sub-to-supramicron primary volcanic aerosol emission (0.2-5 μm diameter) and its role in this process. p62: Friend or Foe? Evidences for OncoJanus and NeuroJanus Roles

p62 is a versatile protein involved in the delicate balance between cell death and survival, which is fundamental for cell fate decision in the context of both cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. As an autophagy adaptor, p62 recognizes polyubiquitin chains and interacts with LC3, thereby targeting the selected cargo to the autophagosome with consequent autophagic degradation. Beside this function, p62 behaves as an interactive hub in multiple signalling including those mediated by Nrf2, NF-κB, caspase-8, and mTORC1. The data show that baculovirus requiresHSPG sulfation, particularly N- and 6-O-sulfation, to bind andtransduce mammalian cells. Calorimetric and viscosimetric investigation of the interaction between α,β-polyasparthydrazide and sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles

Abstract The interaction between α,β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles in aqueous solution was investigated by calorimetry and viscosimetry. The dependence of the enthalpic effect due to this interaction upon the surfactant concentration was rationalized in terms of a progressive binding of SDS micelles to the polymeric backbone. The analysis of the calorimetric data allow evaluation of the binding ability of SDS micelles to the polymeric chain. Interspecies interactions mediated by conductive minerals in the sediments of the ferruginous Lake La Cruz, Spain

AbstractLake La Cruz is considered a biogeochemical analogue to early Earth marine environments because its water column is depleted in sulfate, but rich in methane and iron, similar to conditions envisaged for much of the Precambrian. In this early Earth analogue environment, we show that conductive particles establish a tight metabolic coupling between electroactive microbial clades. Detection of condition-specific marker genes from RNA-seq data with MGFR

The identification of condition-specific genes is key to advancing our understanding of cell fate decisions and disease development. Differential gene expression analysis (DGEA) has been the standard tool for this task. However, the amount of samples that modern transcriptomic technologies allow us to study, makes DGEA a daunting task. On the other hand, experiments with low numbers of replicates lack the statistical power to detect differentially expressed genes. Compartmentalization of gypsum and halite associated with cyanobacteria in saline soil crusts

The interface between biological and geochemical components in surface crust of a saline soil was investigated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in combination with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS). Mineral compounds such as halite and gypsum were identified crystallized around filaments of cyanobacteria. A total of 92 genera were identified from the bacterial community based on 16S gene pyrosequencing analysis.
