Conrad's "Gaspar Ruiz" and Turgenev's "King Lear of the Steppes"

2018

The affinities of monoclonal antibodies against core antigen of hepatitis B virus

1994

Four monoclonal antibodies generated against the recombinant core antigen of hepatitis B virus are investigated for antigen binding. All exhibit a similar affinity to polystyrene-sorbed antigen but only one of them interacts with native form of HBcAg (an assembled particle) in solution. The presence of 0.1% sodium dodecylsulphate is required for the binding of other three antibodies. The phenomenon can be interpreted as inaccessibility of the corresponding epitopes unless the multimeric antigen structure is disrupted. The core antigen coated on polystyrene is considered as a similar exposed structure.

Transient Neonatal Hypercholesterolemia

1993

In order to obtain new information about the relationship between transient neonatal hypercholesterolemia and adrenal gland function, we have studied 39 healthy babies found hypercholesterolemic at birth and 39 healthy controls with normal cholesterol levels. The results of this study have shown that levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in cord blood were not significantly different in the hypercholesterolemic subjects compared with normolipidemic controls (1.4 +/- 0.5 micrograms/dl vs 1.3 +/- 0.5 mu/dl). Moreover correlations between this hormone and levels of total and LDL-cholesterol were not only not statistically significant but even positive (respectively r = +0.207 and +0.195). T…

Muscle hypertrophy, strength development, and serum hormones during strength training in elderly women with fibromyalgia.

2005

To examine the effects of strength training on maximal force, cross-sectional area (CSA), and electromyographic (EMG) activity of muscles and serum hormone concentrations in elderly females with fibromyalgia (FM).Twenty-six patients with FM were randomly assigned to a training (FMT; n = 13; mean age 60 years) or a control (FMC; n = 13; 59 years) group. FMT performed progressive strength training twice a week for 21 weeks. The measurements included maximal isometric and concentric leg extension forces, EMG activity of the vastus lateralis and medialis, CSA of the quadriceps femoris, and serum concentrations of testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth…

The association of serum androsterone glucuronide with inflammatory lesions in women with adult acne1

2002

Serum androsterone glucuronide (AoG) is a metabolite of circulating androgens under the influence of 5α-reductase activity and has been shown to be particularly elevated in women with acne. In this study, we wanted to evaluate changes in AoG before and after treatment with an oral contraceptive or placebo, and to assess whether changes correlated with the number and type of acne lesions. In order to accomplish these aims, we obtained sera from a completed prospective randomized trial, which was designed to assess the effectiveness of an oral contraceptive compared to placebo. Assessments were carried out in 56 women with moderate acne who were treated with Ortho Tri-Cyclen (norgestimate and…

Oral administration of taurolidine ameliorates chronic DSS colitis in mice.

2007

Taurolidine (TRD) has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the anti-inflammatory effects of TRD in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have not been investigated. Here, we have analyzed the toxicity of TRD after oral long-term application in mice and examined the impact of oral TRD in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) model of experimental colitis. Female C57/BL6 mice received TRD in various concentrations (0.1% to 0.4%) for 60 days. Toxicity was evaluated by use of a disease activity index (DAI) and histological examination of major metabolic organs. Furthermore, the impact of 0.2% TRD on a chronic DSS colitis was examined by daily DAI, histological crypt damage score (CDS),…

Free and sulfoconjugated dehydroepiandrosterone, cyclic adenosine-3′,5′-monophosphate, and free estriol in maternal and cord blood

1976

When free DHEA, its sulfatide, and sulfate were assayed in maternal plasma as well as in umbilical cord arterial and venous plasma, rather high concentrations were found in either fraction from cord arterial plasma, reflecting the fetal contribution not only of free DHEA and DHEA sulfate, but also of the lipophile steroid sulfatide. Since high DHEA levels were associated with elevated c-AMP concentrations, a certain interrelationship of both parameters is indicated. In the course of delivery, a rapid decrease of free estriol in maternal plasma was observed. Higher concentration of free estriol in umbilical venous plasma pointed at its placental biosynthesis from fetal precursors.

Chemically induced mouse models of colitis.

2012

Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), both of which are referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract that have characteristic clinical, pathological, endoscopic, and radiologic features. Knowledge about the pathogenesis of IBD has dramatically increased in recent years based in part on the use of experimental models of IBD. Although none of these models exactly mimics the human disorder, they have proven to be useful for studying many important aspects of these conditions. Detailed in this unit is a description of the most commonly used chemically induced mouse models of IBD. These include trinitrobenzene sulfo…
