Epifluorescence microscopy studies of fatty acid monolayers: Domain formation induced by polymeric gegenions

The monolayer behavior of long-chain fatty acids at the air/water interface on a poly(ethyleneimine) containing subphase was investigated. The interaction of the polymeric gegenions in the subphase leads to expanded states and permits the visualization of the aggregation behavior of different long-chain fatty acids via fluorescence microscopy. The monolayer morphologies and their variability were intensively studied by fluorescence microscopy. In addition, the transfer of the complexed fatty acid monolayers to solid substrates has been investigated.

Cytotoxic Glial Swelling by Arachidonic Acid

Arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4) is a major constituent of membrane phospholipids in brain tissue. Normally, the free fatty acid is present only in a small amount, but it accumulates under adverse conditions, such as ischemia or brain injury [1,9]. The release of free fatty acid involves activation of phospholipases and breakdown of membrane phospholipids. AA in particular is considered to mediate pathological processes. The polyunsaturated compound is a precursor of prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and oxygen-derived free radicals [11]. In cerebral ischemia concentrations of free AA of up to 0.5 mM/kg have been found in brain tissue [9].

EFFECTS OF DIETARY 18:3 N-3 TRANS ISOMERS ON THE ?6 DESATURATION OF ?-LINOLENIC ACID

Trans isomers of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are formed during heat treatment of oils. In the present work, the effect of dietary geometrical isomers of α-linolenic acid (18:3 n-3) on the Δ6 desaturation of all cis 18:3 n-3 was investigated, using rat liver microsomes. The desaturation rates were higher in microsomes from animals fed a cis n-3 deficient diet, as compared to those from the control group or those from rats fed 18:3 n-3 and its trans isomers. Mitochondria and peroxisomes are small ubiquitous organelles. They both play major roles in cell metabolism, especially in terms of fatty acid metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and ROS scavenging, and it is now clear that they metabolically interact with each other. In response to the growing consumer demand for fresh cheese in summer, this investigation was aimed to evaluate the chemical and microbiological characteristics of sheep’s milk and cheese produced in Sicily in the hot summer months. A total of 810 bulk milk samples collected from 17 farms rearing ewes of the Valle del Belice breed were analysed for chemical composition, somatic cell count, total bacterial count and clotting parameters. Temporal fatty acid profiles of human decomposition fluid in soil

Abstract We studied the changes in concentration and relative abundance of human-derived fatty acids (FAs) in soil over a period of one year. The study is based on analysis of soil underneath a human body that lay on the soil surface for 18 days before it was discovered. Soil samples were taken when the body was removed, and also 358 days later. Large amounts of the total FA concentration at the start of the measurement period were still present one year after the removal of the body. Protoplast isolation and regeneration is known from numerous plant species (Binding et al. 1). But there are plant species which show very unconstant regeneration or no reaction at all, even if the isolation showed high viability of the protoplasts. Marine heterotrophic dinoflagellate Crypthecodinium cohnii is an aerobic oleaginous microorganism that accumulates intracellular lipid with high content of 4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a polyunsaturated ω-3 (22:6) fatty acid with multiple health benefits. C. cohnii can grow on glucose and ethanol, but not on sucrose or fructose. n-3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are considered to be authentic immunosuppressors and appear to exert beneficial effects with respect to certain immune-mediated diseases. In addition to promoting T-helper 1 (Th1) cell to T-helper 2 (Th2) cell effector T-cell differentiation, n-3 PUFA may also exert anti-inflammatory actions by inducing apoptosis in Th1 cells. With respect to mechanisms of action, effects range from the modulation of membrane receptors to gene transcription via perturbation of a number of second messenger cascades.
