Structural and electrical study of the topological insulator SnBi2Te4 at high pressures

We report high-pressure X-ray diffraction and electrical measurements of the topological insulator SnBi2Te4 at room temperature. The pressure dependence of the structural properties of the most stable phase of SnBi2Te4 at ambient conditions (trigonal phase) have been experimentally determined and compared with results of our ab initio calculations. Furthermore, a comparison of SnBi2Te4 with the parent compound Bi2Te3 shows that the central TeSnTe trilayer, which substitutes the Te layer at the center of the TeBiTeBiTe layers of Bi2Te3, plays a minor role in the compression of SnBi2Te4. In this work we introduce a virtual laboratory, APERIODIC DIFFRACT, developed in Matlab GUI (Graphical User Interface) as an informatics tool for teaching the diffractive properties of aperiodic gratings. Laser-Generated Acoustic Signal Interaction with Surface Flaws on Rail Wheels

Long- and short-range acoustic-signal interaction with surface-breaking cracks and geometric boundaries of the rail-wheel tread area are presented in this article. Ultrasonic signals are generated using a laser-line source of varying length and distance from a crack and are detected with a 1-MHz contact transducer to map the sound field behind the crack in the near, intermediate, and far fields of the insonified region. The factors that affect the behavior of a laser-generated surface acoustic wave propagating along the tread area of a rail wheel are discussed. Coherent Microscopy for 3-D Movement Monitoring and Super-Resolved Imaging

In this chapter we present three types of microscopy-related configurations while the first one is used for 3-D movement monitoring of the inspected samples, the second one is used for super-resolved 3-D imaging, and the last one presents an overview digital holographic microscopy applications. The first configuration is based on temporal tracking of secondary reflected speckles when imaged by properly defocused optics. We validate the proposed scheme by using it to monitor 3-D spontaneous contraction of rat’s cardiac muscle cells while allowing nanometric tracking accuracy without interferometric recording. High pressure structure of Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore at cryogenic temperatures

The structure of Th 2 Ti 2 O 7 pyrochlore was investigated at high pressures up to 24 GPa at cryogenic temperatures down to 6.5 K using angular dispersive X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation at HPCAT, Advanced Photon Source. The cell parameters were obtained by performing full profile Rietveld refinements of the diffraction data. The equation of state is obtained at low temperatures by fitting the pressure-volume data to a second order Birch Murnaghan eqation and a bulk modulus value of 168(4) GPa is obtained. High-pressure x-ray diffraction study of CdMoO4 and EuMoO4

International audience; We studied the effects of high pressure on the crystalline structure of scheelite-type CdMoO4 and EuMoO4. We found that the compressibility of the materials is highly nonisotropic, with the c-axis being the most compressible one. We also observed clear evidence of a structural phase transition at 12 GPa (CdMoO4) and 8.8 GPa (EuMoO4). The high-pressure phase has a monoclinic structure similar to M-fergusonite. The transition is reversible, and no volume change is detected between the low- and high-pressure phases. Thallium under extreme compression

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the high-pressure behavior of thallium. X-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out at room temperature up to 125 GPa using diamond-anvil cells, nearly doubling the pressure range of previous experiments. We have confirmed the hcp-fcc transition at 3.5 GPa and determined that the fcc structure remains stable up to the highest pressure attained in the experiments. In addition, HP-HT experiments have been performed up to 8 GPa and 700 K by using a combination of x-ray diffraction and a resistively heated diamond-anvil cell. Thermal equation of state of ruthenium characterized by resistively heated diamond anvil cell

AbstractThe high-pressure and high-temperature structural and chemical stability of ruthenium has been investigated via synchrotron X-ray diffraction using a resistively heated diamond anvil cell. In the present experiment, ruthenium remains stable in the hcp phase up to 150 GPa and 960 K. The thermal equation of state has been determined based upon the data collected following four different isotherms. Phase diagram of calcium at high pressure and high temperature

Resistively heated diamond-anvil cells have been used together with synchrotron x-ray diffraction to investigate the phase diagram of calcium up to 50 GPa and 800 K. The phase boundaries between the Ca-I (fcc), Ca-II (bcc), and Ca-III (simple cubic, sc) phases have been determined at these pressure-temperature conditions, and the ambient temperature equation of state has been generated. Isothermal equation of state and phase stability of Fe 5 Si 3 up to 96 GPa and 3000 K

The composition of Earth's core has first-order implications for understanding the thermal and chemical history of the deep Earth. The present work measures the pressure-volume equation of state of Fe5Si3 to 96 GPa in a diamond anvil cell using noble gas pressure media and demonstrates that Fe5Si3 is not stable at high temperature and pressure, but reappears during thermal quench. The isothermal equation of state at ambient temperature of Fe5Si3 is given by the bulk modulus KT,0 = 167 (8) and KT,0' = 5.1 (2)), with V0 = 56.29 cm3mol-1.
