Recycling of dry and wet polyamide 6

2002

Recycling of polycondensation polymers can give rise to secondary materials with good mechanical properties only if a careful drying is carried out before the melt reprocessing operations. The presence of humidity provokes the hydrolytic chain scission of the macromolecules and the consequent decrease of molecular weight and properties. In this work, the drying step was substituted by the addition of an antioxidant that is able to protect the macromolecules because it is the autioxidant is more prone to hydrolysis, thus removing the water from the melt. The mechanical properties of polyamide 6 reprocessed more times in wet conditions and in the presence of this stabilizer are even better th…

Adsorption of water vapor by poly(styrenesulfonic acid), sodium salt: isothermal and isobaric adsorption equilibria

2004

Abstract Air conditioning and dehumidifying systems based on sorption on solids are of great interest, especially in humid climates, because they allow reduction of thermal loads and use of chlorofluorocarbons. Previous studies have shown that hydrophilic polymers such as sulfonic polymers can have very high performance in water adsorption from air. The aim of this study was to characterize the water vapor adsorption properties of fully sulfonated and monosulfonated poly(styrenesulfonic acid), sodium salt, and to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption on these materials. Adsorption isotherms have been determined by TGA between 298 and 317 K for pressures ranging from 0.1 to 45 hPa. They have…

Effective conductivity in association with model structure and spatial inhomogeneity of polymer/carbon black composites

1996

The relationship between effective conductivity and cell structure of polyethylene/carbon composites as well as between effective conductivity and spatial distribution of carbon black are discussed. Following Yoshida's model both structures can, in a way, be said to be intermediate between the well known Maxwell-Garnett (MG) and Bruggeman (BR) limiting structures. Using TEM photographs on composites with various carbon blacks we have observed that the larger is Garncarek's inhomogeneity measure H of two-dimensional (2D) representative distribution of the carbon black, the smaller is the effective conductivity of the composite.

Characterization of poly(N-alkylanilines) by Raman spectroscopy

2007

Abstract Thin films of poly( N -alkylaniline) were synthesized in acidic aqueous solution and in mixtures of aqueous and organic solvents. The polymer films (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl) were characterized by Raman spectroscopy with the excitation wavelengths of 514.5, 632.8 and 780 nm. The main Raman bands have been characterized for the leucoemeraldine, emeraldine and pernigraniline oxidation states between −0.2 and 0.8 V (vs. Ag|AgCl). This fundamental study shows that the structure of the half-oxidized emeraldine form contains quinoid units, which supports the commonly accepted oxidation and reduction scheme of poly( N -alkylanilines).

Atomic force microscopy study of conducting polymer films near electrode's edge or grown on microband electrode

2013

Abstract Polypyrrole (PPy) films of different thicknesses (within the range from 200 nm to 2.5 μm) were electrodeposited on two types of inhomogeneous substrates, single band and double-band Pt electrodes. Topographic images of the polymer layers were obtained by means of ex situ large-scale AFM technique to demonstrate how the propagation rates of the film growth above the electrode (in the normal direction to the electrode surface) and along the insulating surface surrounding the single- or double-band electrodes (in the horizontal direction) change with the deposition charge. It is proved that variations in the film thickness over the double band electrodes and progressive changes of the…

Patterning of Conducting Polymers Using UV Lithography: The in-Situ Polymerization Approach

2012

We report on the in-situ polymerization of 3T with Cu(ClO4)2 inside several host polymers such as Novolak-based negative-tone photoresist, polystyrene (PS), poly(4-vinylphenol) (P4VP), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(4-vinylphenol)-co-(methyl methacrylate) (P4VP-co-MMA) to form an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN). Conducting IPN films in the order of 10–4–150 S/cm are obtained depending on the specific IPN composition. Moreover, the convenience of this synthetic approach has been demonstrated using a commercially available negative-tone photoresist based on Novolak as a host polymer. Novolak photoresist was properly formulated with 3T and Cu(ClO4)2 to preserve as far as pos…

Electrochromic Performances of Poly(Azure A) Films from Digital Video-Electrochemistry (DVEC)

2020

Poly(Azure A) (PAA) films doped with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were grown on transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates by cyclic voltammetry. The electrochromism of PAA was investigated by digital video-electrochemistry (DVEC). DVEC consists of the acquisition of sequential digital images during the electro-stimulated changes of PAA color. The evolution of red, green, and blue (R, G, B) colors intensity (I) of analyzed pixels provides enough sensitivity to detect changes of some nmol cm−2 of electroactive centers. Besides, the different time evolution of these color intensities can serve to discern among different electroactive centers activated in the polymer. For the first ti…

Multilayer Thin Films by Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Hole- and Electron-Transport Polyelectrolytes: Optical and Electrochemical Properties

2006

In this paper, we pressent the synthesis of a series of p-type and n-type semicondnctring polyelectrolytes with triarylamine, oxadiazole, thiarliazole and triazine moictes. The synthesized polymeric hole and electrom iransport materials were examined optically and electrochemically using UV/Vis spectroscopy. PL spectroscopy and CV. Based on the optical and electrochemical data, each of the energy levels were calculated and all values suggested that the were promising hole-(p-type) or alectron=transprot (n-type) materials for devices. Moreover, the synthesized ionie polymers were suitable for LBL thin film deposition from ditute polymer solutions and the multilayers were fully characterized …

In-situ polymerization of polyaniline in radiation functionalized polypropylene films

2015

Abstract In-situ generation of a nanodispersed conductive polymer within a polypropylene matrix has been pursued in order to obtain flexible, conductive films. Radiation grafting of acrylic acid to polypropylene (PP) has been applied to insert carboxyl functionalities on PP. The radiation-grafted films have been further derivatized with a variety of diamines and used as substrates for in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization of polyaniline (PANI). PANI grows as a thin skin from the surface of the film as well as an interpenetrated network in its interiors. Evidence of chemical attachment of PANI to PP has been sought by performing FTIR and XPS analyses after extraction of the unbound polym…

Langmuir-Blodgett Mono- and Multilayer Assemblies of Amphiphilic Liquid- Crystalline n-Alkyl-4′-n-alkoxybiphenyl-4-carboxylates. I

1991

Five n-Alkyl-4′-Alkoxy-biphenyl-4-carboxylates were investigated as Langmuir monolayers at the air/ water interface and as Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films on solid supports. All five compounds form stable monolayers at the air/water interface and can be transferred onto solid supports yielding LB-films, whose structures and kinetic behavior strongly depend on the headgroup. The structures of the LB-films were investigated by means of optical textures and X-ray diffraction and compared with the structures of the corresponding bulk phases which were investigated by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry and X-ray powder diffraction. The LB-films of the acid and the two methyl esters exhibit …
