Poling Induced Mass Transport in Thin Polymer Films

In this study we report investigation of the polymer film morphology modifications during their corona poling for fabrication of nonlinear optically (NLO) active materials. We demonstrate that at certain poling conditions surface and spatial inhomogeneities in the poled area of the sample appear. Densities of the inhomogeinities depend on the strength of the poling field, the sample temperature during the poling, and the prepoling conditions. Optimization of the poling conditions directed toward avoiding surface modifications enables us to increase the overall observable effective nonlinearity of the sample up to 10 times. Polymer-induced phase separation in Escherichia coli suspensions

We studied aggregation and phase separation in suspensions of de-flagellated Escherichia coli (AB1157) in phosphate buffer induced by the anionic polyelectrolyte sodium polystyrene sulfonate. We also performed Monte Carlo simulations of this system based on the Asakura–Oosawa model of colloid–polymer mixtures. The results of these simulations, as well as comparison with previous work on synthetic colloid–polymer mixtures, demonstrate that the role of the polymer is to cause a depletion attraction between the E. coli cells. Fast proton conduction in hydrogen bonded microheterogeneous systems: Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid/N-methyl formamide liquid mixtures

Structural and dynamical properties of bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP)/N-methyl formamide (NMF) liquid mixtures in the whole composition range have been investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-rays Diffraction (XRD), and AC complex impedance spectroscopy. Driven by hydrogen bond interactions among HDEHP PO(4)H group and NMF CO and NH groups, and also by steric effects among the HDEHP alkyl chains, the system microstructure is mainly characterized by the coexistence of spatially separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanodomains showing local organization and short-range order. Iodine and mercury resonance lamps for kinetics experiments and their spectra in the far ultraviolet

Electrodeless iodine and mercury iodide radio-frequency discharge lamps have been made to provide intense sources of resonance radiation of iodine and mercury in the 183-253 nm region. Production technology and emission spectra in the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet regions are described. Both lamps (iodine and mercury iodide) are designed and used for monitoring the iodine 2P1/2 (206.163 nm) and 2P3/2 (183.038 nm) level population kinetics after flash photolysis of I2 or other precursor molecules in laboratory experiments. The technique is suitable for the investigation of the gas phase reaction kinetics following the photolysis of I2 in the presence of O3.

Optical properties of different polymer thin films containing in situ synthesized Ag and Au nanoparticles

Here we report on the in situ synthesis of Ag and Au nanoparticles inside several polymer matrixes by solid-state chemical reduction of a metallic salt. Poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), novolak, poly(4-vinylphenol) (P4VP), poly(4-vinylphenol)-co-(methyl methacrylate) (P4VP-co-MMA) and poly(styrene-co-allyl alcohol) (PS-co-AA) were able to reduce Ag(I) and Au(III) to the corresponding nanoparticles during the baking process. Evaporation of tungsten oxides: A mass-spectrometric study of the vapour contents

Abstract The evaporation of bulk oxides of WO2 and WO3 and oxidised tungsten surfaces (metallic tungsten heated in an oxygen atmosphere) have been studied by the means of mass-spectrometry. The principal constituents of the vapour are found to be molecules of WO2, WO3, W2O6 and W3O9. These results differ from earlier reports, where the presence of molecules smaller than W3O9 in the mass-spectrum was interpreted as an artifact due to electron impact dissociation of larger polymers.

The phase behavior of protein solutions is affected by additives such as crowder molecules or salts. In particular, upon addition of multivalent counterions, a reentrant condensation can occur; i.e., protein solutions are stable for low and high multivalent ion concentrations but aggregating at intermediate salt concentrations. The addition of monovalent ions shifts the phase boundaries to higher multivalent ion concentrations. This effect is found to be reflected in the protein interactions, as accessed via small-angle X-ray scattering. Absorption and desorption of liquid water by a superabsorbent polymer: Effect of polymer in the drying of the soil and the quality of certain plants

In this work, we were interested in the study of the kinetic behavior of the reaction of drying soil representing the Marrakesh region (south of Morocco) in the presence of an superabsorbent polymer. The presence of a polymer in the soil diminished the kinetic drying of the soil, which will have as an application a reduction in water loss in the process of irrigation. The presence of a polymer in the soil enables a complete modification of the kinetic regimes controlling the soil-drying kinetic. To study the potentialities of a polyelectrolyte superabsorbent for the storage of water, we have studied a ground representative of the area of Haouz (area of Marrakesh, South of Morocco) in the presence of polymer. We sought the optimal proportions allowing the best retention of water by the mixture made up of the polymer and the ground and to prolong the storage period of water in the ground. We have also studied the effect of certain ions and the pH on the capacity for absorption of polymer.
