Morphology and Rheology of HDPE/LCP Blends Compatibilized by a Novel PE-g-LCP Copolymer

A novel graft copolymer (PE-g-LCP) consisting of polyethylene (PE) backbones and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) branches was synthesized via reactive blending of an acrylic acid-functionalized PE (Escor 5000 by Exxon) with a semiflexible LCP (SBH 1 : 1 : 2 by Eniricerche S.p.A.). The crude reactive blending product (COP) was shown by investigation of the fractions soluble in boiling toluene and xylene and of the residue to contain unreacted Escor and SBH, together with the graft copolymer forming the interphase. Viscosity-molecular weight relationship for cellulose solutions in either NMMO monohydrate or cuen

The intrinsic viscosities, [η], of nine cellulose samples, with molar masses from 50 × 103 to 1 390 × 103 were determined in the solvents NMMO*H2O (N-methyl morpholin N-oxide hydrate) at 80°C and in cuen (copper II-ethlenediamine) at 25°C. The evaluation of these results with respect to the Kuhn–Mark–Houwink relations shows that the data for NMMO*H2O fall on the usual straight line in the double logarithmic plots only for M ≤ 158 103; the corresponding [η]/M relation reads log ([η]/mL g−1) = –1.465 + 0.735 log M. Polymeric gegenions induced variability and mobility of amphiphilic supramolecular structures on solid substrates

Abstract The micromorphological variations of amphiphilic L -glutamate derivatives at air-substrate interfaces due to an adjacent mobile polymer matrix have been investigated via fluorescence microscopy. Adjusted monolayers of the L -glutamate derivatives have been transferred by LB technique out of different aggregation states onto various substrates. The substrates have been prepared by successive polymer preadsorption to the solid support. This study focused on the preparation and characterization of films based on biopolymers (hydroxypropylcellulose and low methoxyl pectin) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The morphology is strongly dependent on the polymer nature. In particular, we observed a sandwich-like structure composed of two hydroxypropylcellulose layers incorporating the HNTs and a homogeneous distribution of the nanotubes into the low methoxyl pectin matrix. The different mesoscopic properties were invoked to explain the dielectric, thermal, and wettability properties of the corresponding films. Biosilica-based immobilization strategy for label-free OWLS sensors

Abstract In the last years, a new group of enzymes, so-called silicateins, have been identified and characterized, which form the axial filaments of the spicules of the siliceous sponges, consisting of amorphous silica. Silicateins are able to catalyze the polycondensation and deposition of silica at mild conditions (low temperature and physiological pH). By means of these enzymes it is possible for the first time to produce silica nanostructures biocatalytically, which opens new ways for construction of biosensors. Deposition of very thin uniform indium sulfide layers over metallic nano-rods by the Spray-Ion Layer Gas Reaction method

Abstract Very thin and uniform layers of indium sulfide were deposited on nickel nano-rods using the sequential and cyclical Spray-ILGAR® (Ion Layer Gas Reaction) technique. Substrates were fabricated by electrodeposition of Ni within the pores of polycarbonate membranes and subsequent chemical dissolution of the template. With respect to the depositions on flat substrates, experimental conditions were modified and optimized for the present geometry. Structure of bottle brush polymers on surfaces: weak versus strong adsorption.

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations are presented for a coarse-grained model of cylindrical molecular brushes adsorbed on a flat structureless substrate, varying both the chain length N of the side chains and the backbone chain length N(b). For the case of good solvent conditions, both the cases of weak adsorption (only 10 to 15% of the monomers being bound to the surface) and strong adsorption (~40% of the monomers being bound to the surface, forcing the bottle brush into an almost 2D conformation) are studied. Detection of phase transitions in thin films with a quartz crystal microbalance

Abstract The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is used to determine the phase transition point of thin films by measuring the change in frequency as a function of temperature. To elucidate this relationship, two types of polymers were studied where the bulk phase transitions were known. We investigated a casted thin film of an amphiphilic polyoxazoline and a Langmuir-Blodgett film comprised of fifteen double layers of an amphotropic polyacrylate. The phase transition points of the thin films could be detected by the QCM which were in the same range as for the bulk materials.

We report a Fe(II) complex based on 4′,4′′ carboxylic acid disubstituted dipyrazolylpyridine that shows a spin-crossover close to room temperature associated to a crystallographic phase transition and the LIESST effect with a high T(LIESST) of 120 K.
