Abstract Three numerical algorithms capable of simulating transport processes through simple, porous membranes in the steady state have been employed in order to study the change in the diffusion potential with the membrane thickness and the ionic concentrations for the ternary systems NaClHClH20 and CaCI2NaC1H 2 O. The first simulation procedure uses Poisson's equation, the two others replace this equation by the electroneutrality and Goldman constant-field approximations respectively. From the results presented here, conditions for the applicability of the electroneutrality and constantfield assumption to ternary electrolyte systems are given.

A finite-difference method for numerical solution of the steady-state nernst—planck equations with non-zero convection and electric current density

Abstract A computer algorithm has been developed for digital simulation of ionic transport through membranes obeying the Nernst—Planck and Poisson equations. The method of computation is quite general and allows the treatment of steady-state electrodiffusion equations for multiionic environments, the ionic species having arbitrary valences and mobilities, when convection and electric current are involved. Updating chromatographic predictions by accounting ageing for single and tandem columns.

The most efficient optimization methodologies in liquid chromatography are based on the modeling and prediction of the chromatographic behavior for each compound in the sample. However, when the column suffers some ageing after the modeling process, predictions may differ significantly from the actual separation. Repeating the modeling is especially troublesome when several columns are involved, as is the case of coupled columns. We propose a shortcut to correct the time and peak profiles in these situations, after evaluating the effects of ageing. Superconducting Microwave Cavity Made of Bulk MgB2

We report the successful manufacture and characterization of a microwave resonant cylindrical cavity made of bulk MgB2 superconductor (Tc = 38.5 K), which has been produced by the Reactive Liquid Mg Infiltration technique. The quality factor of the cavity for the TE011 mode, resonating at 9.79 GHz, has been measured as a function of the temperature. At T = 4.2 K, the unloaded quality factor is 2.2x10^5; it remains of the order of 10^5 up to T ~ 30 K. We discuss the potential performance improvements of microwave cavities built from bulk MgB2 materials produced by reactive liquid Mg infiltration.

Characterization of activated sludge settling properties with a sludge collapse-acceleration stage

Abstract The sedimentability of the activated sludge can be affected by the presence of a large variety of coagulants and polymers from a previous physical-chemical process. In this paper, the activated sludge settling process in industrial wastewater treatment plants where the sludge does not settle in a conventional way is studied. Thermal potential of ion-exchange membranes and its application to thermoelectric power generation

The low efficiency and high price of thermoelectric semiconductors has generated interest in unconventional forms of thermoelectric materials. In this article, ionic thermoelectricity has been studied with commercial ion-exchange membranes for different aqueous 1:1 electrolytes. The theory of thermal membrane potential has been derived taking into account the ionic heats of transport, the non-isothermal Donnan potentials, the temperature polarization, and the thermally-induced concentration polarization of the electrolyte.
