Abitare il confine. Spazio, territorialità e dilemmi dello sviluppo
2013
Compressive response of substandard steel-jacketed RC columns strengthened under sustained service loads: From the local to the global behavior
2018
Abstract This paper presents an experimental investigation on substandard partially steel jacketed RC columns strengthened under sustained loads and loaded until failure. The aim of the study is to compare the compressive response of preloaded columns with respect to the tests without preload to obtain a more realistic prediction of load-carrying capacity of structural columns after retrofitting under serviceability loads. The influence of the preload level, the delayed contribution of the confining device during the loading process and the time dependent effects are highlighted for the tested specimens. Based on the experimental observations, an analysis-oriented model is proposed for the …
Spectral WENO schemes with Adaptive Mesh Refinement for models of polydisperse sedimentation
2012
The sedimentation of a polydisperse suspension with particles belonging to N size classes (species) can be described by a system of N nonlinear, strongly coupled scalar first-order conservation laws. Its solutions usually exhibit kinematic shocks separating areas of different composition. Based on the so-called secular equation [J. Anderson, Lin. Alg. Appl. 246, 49–70 (1996)], which provides access to the spectral decomposition of the Jacobian of the flux vector for this class of models, Burger et al. [J. Comput. Phys. 230, 2322–2344 (2011)] proposed a spectral weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme for the numerical solution of the model. It is demonstrated that the efficiency …
Fine-Mesh Numerical Simulations for 2D Riemann Problems with a Multilevel Scheme
2001
The numerical simulation of physical problems modeled by systems of conservation laws can be difficult due to the occurrence of discontinuities and other non-smooth features in the solution.
Adaptive mesh refinement techniques for high-order shock capturing schemes for multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations
2006
The numerical simulation of physical phenomena represented by non-linear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws presents specific difficulties mainly due to the presence of discontinuities in the solution. State of the art methods for the solution of such equations involve high resolution shock capturing schemes, which are able to produce sharp profiles at the discontinuities and high accuracy in smooth regions, together with some kind of grid adaption, which reduces the computational cost by using finer grids near the discontinuities and coarser grids in smooth regions. The combination of both techniques presents intrinsic numerical and programming difficulties. In this work we present a …
Stress-Strain Law for Confined Concrete with Hardening or Softening Behavior
2013
This paper provides a new general stress-strain law for concrete confined by steel, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), or fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM), obtained by a suitable modification of the well-known Sargin’s curve for steel confined concrete. The proposed law is able to reproduce stress-strain curve of any shape, having both hardening or softening behavior, by using a single closed-form simple algebraic expression with constant coefficients. The coefficients are defined on the basis of the stress and the tangent modulus of the confined concrete in three characteristic points of the curve, thus being related to physical meaningful parameters. It will be shown that if the v…
Estimates, trends, and drivers of the global burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM2·5 air pollution, 1990–2019: an analysis of data from the G…
2022
Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regress…
Job strain in public transport drivers: Data to assess the relationship between demand-control model indicators, traffic accidents and sanctions
2018
This Data in Brief (DiB) article examines the association between the Job Demand-Control (JDC) model of stress and traffic safety outcomes (accidents and sanctions) in public transport drivers (n = 780). The data was collected using a structured self-administrable questionnaire composed of measurements of work stress (Job Content Questionnaire), and demographics (professional driving experience, hours and days working/driving per week). The data contains 4 parts: descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations between the study variables, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post-Hoc comparisons between drivers classified different quadrants of the JDC model. For further information, it is conve…
