Self-pumped phase conjugation in a BaTiO3:Rh waveguide
2002
We present a self-pumped phase conjugator originated by self-bending of the incident beam at λ = 515 nm in a BaTiO3:Rh waveguide elaborated by three successive He+ ion implantations. Phase conjugate reflectivity reached is 28 %.
ATR-FTIR spectroscopy for the routine quality control of exosome isolations
2021
Abstract Exosomes are nanosized vesicles containing specific cargos of DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites, and intracellular and membrane lipids. Exosome isolation needs to be optimized carefully depending on the type of biofluid and tissue and the retrieved exosomes need to be characterized. The main objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of a multimodal analysis of Attenuated Total Reflectance – Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and UPLC–QqTOF-MSMS for the development of a routine quality control tool of isolated exosomes and the rapid characterization of their lipid profiles and total protein content. Using human milk as model example, exosomes were isolat…
Hard-wall interactions in soft matter systems: Exact numerical treatment
2011
An algorithm for handling hard-wall interactions in simulations of driven diffusive particle motion is proposed. It exploits an exact expression for the one-dimensional transition probability in the presence of a hard (reflecting) wall and therefore is numerically exact in the sense that it does not introduce any additional approximation beyond the usual discretization procedures. Studying two standard situations from soft matter systems, its performance is compared to the heuristic approaches used in the literature.
Mechanical properties of basalt fiber reinforced composites manufactured with different vacuum assisted impregnation techniques
2016
Abstract This work describes an experimental mechanical characterisation campaign on composites made out of a quasi-unidirectional basalt fabric. In order to evaluate the ability of commercial basalt fabrics and their composites to meet the potentials of basalt fibers, the work has used raw materials from commercial catalogs with no further modification. Two common manufacturing techniques for medium performance composites have been adopted: vacuum assisted resin infusion, and hand-impregnated vacuum bagging. Two panels, one for each technique, have been fabricated, able to provide a sufficient number of samples for a comprehensive stiffness and strength characterization through Tensile, Fl…

First Specifications of a PSTM Working In the Infrared
1993
One of the most promising extension of the photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM) is its use as a locally resolved spectroscopic tool. The infrared (IR) spectral window offers a wide variety of interesting applications since many materials have a well-defined signature in this range. We have undertaken the experimental modifications that are necessary to operate the existing PSTM’s in the IR domain. In this work, we present preliminary data obtained with two IR light sources: an extended source (Globar type) and the free electron IR laser source (CLIO) available at LURE (Orsay). In both cases, the evanescent field has been detected with a fluoride glass optical fiber and the characteri…
A new Frequency Domain Measure of Causality based on Partial Spectral Decomposition of Autoregressive Processes and its Application to Cardiovascular…
2019
We present a new method to quantify in the frequency domain the strength of directed interactions between linear stochastic processes. This issue is traditionally addressed by the directed coherence (DC), a popular causality measure derived from the spectral representation of vector autoregressive (AR) processes. Here, to overcome intrinsic limitations of the DC when it needs to be objectively quantified within specific frequency bands, we propose an approach based on spectral decomposition, which allows to isolate oscillatory components related to the pole representation of the vector AR process in the Z-domain. Relating the causal and non-causal power content of these components we obtain…
Ultraviolet vision and foraging in terrestrial vertebrates
2002
Tetrachromatic colour vision, based on four ‘main’ colours and their combinations, is probably the original colour vision in terrestrial vertebrates. In addition to human visible waveband of light (400–700 nm) and three main colours, it also includes the near ultraviolet part of light spectrum (320–400 nm). The ecological importance of ultraviolet (UV) vision in animals has mainly been studied in the context of intra- and inter-sexual signalling, but recently the importance of UV vision in foraging has received more attention. Foraging animals may use either UV cues (reflectance or absorbance) of food items or UV cues of the environment. So far, all diurnal birds studied (at least 35 specie…
