Real-time observation of the intravalley spin-flip process in single-layer WS2

2019

We use helicity-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy to track intravalley scattering dynamics in monolayer WS2. We find that spin-polarized carriers scatter from upper to lower conduction band by reversing their spin orientation on a sub-ps timescale.

Three-dimensional mapping of the B 1 field using an optimized phase-based method: Application to hyperpolarized 3 He in lungs

2010

A novel method is presented for the three-dimensional mapping of the B1-field of a transmit radio-frequency MR coil. The method is based on the acquisition of phase images, where the effective flip angle is encoded in the phase of the nonselective hard pulse excitation. The method involves the application of a rectangular composite pulse as excitation in a three-dimensional gradient recall echo to produce measurable phase angle variation. However, such a pulse may significantly increase the radio-frequency power deposition in excess of the standard acceptable SAR limits, imposing extremely long TRs (>100 msec), which would result in acquisition times significantly greater than a single brea…

Equilibrating Glassy Systems with Parallel Tempering

2001

We discuss the efficiency of the so-called parallel tempering method to equilibrate glassy systems also at low temperatures. The main focus is on two structural glass models, SiO2 and a Lennard-Jones system, but we also investigate a fully connected 10 state Potts-glass. By calculating the mean squared displacement of a tagged particle and the spin-autocorrelation function, we find that for these three glass-formers the parallel tempering method is indeed able to generate, at low temperatures, new independent configurations at a rate which is O(100) times faster than more traditional algorithms, such as molecular dynamics and single spin flip Monte Carlo dynamics. In addition we find that t…

Helps from flipped classroom in learning suturing skill: The medical students' perspective.

2018

Background Today, flipped classroom (FC) has been widely used in medical education. However, the effectiveness of FC remains controversial. The variation may cause by different subjects or different course design. Moreover, those studies did not explain how the association among different domains of learning objective was in FCs. The purpose of this study was to explore the help of learning domains from a FC of suturing skill in year-5 medical students. Design This study determined sample size according to statistical power. A minimum number of 77 participants for regression analysis are needed. Therefore, this study enrolled 78 medical students in a 2-hour suturing course, which consisted …

Advanced Strategies for Food-Grade Protein Production: A New E. coli/Lactic Acid Bacteria Shuttle Vector for Improved Cloning and Food-Grade Expressi…

2019

Food-grade production of recombinant proteins in Gram-positive bacteria, especially in LAB (i.e., Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus), is of great interest in the areas of recombinant enzyme production, industrial food fermentation, gene and metabolic engineering, as well as antigen delivery for oral vaccination. Food-grade expression relies on hosts generally considered as safe organisms and on clone selection not dependent on antibiotic markers, which limit the overall DNA manipulation workflow, as it can be carried out only in the expression host and not in E. coli. Moreover, many commercial expression vectors lack useful elements for protein purification. We constructed a &ld…

Using Prototyping in Authentic Learning of Human-Centred Design of Mobile Apps

2017

Recent advances in mobile technology have seen a sharp increase in the number of mobile applications across various application domains. The challenge remains that many software development teams may lack appropriate competences to design usable and human-centred interactive systems. This can negatively affect the usability and the user experience. In this article, we present how to learn the human-centred design process using an authentic learning approach. Students need to investigate, discuss, construct new knowledge and apply theoretical concepts to address real world problems. The main purpose of authentic learning as a pedagogical approach is to position the subject of study into a re…

THE ADVANTAGES OF FLIPPED LEARNING MODEL: AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

2016

Studying children’s literature involves questioning how fantasy and representations of childhood relate to cultural contexts and a specific target audience. In an age of technology and online media, this program teaches students how to encourage young people to appreciate literature's heritage. This research examines how using the flipped classroom model provides opportunities to design and deliver courses using active learning and engagement strategies to facilitate students’ teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking skills in a collegial environment. The aims of research are: to familiarise with some of the themes and ideas explored in a selection of literature for children from the…

Nanotransducers on printed circuit boards by rational design of high-density, long, thin and untapered ZnO nanowires

2018

Abstract Nanotransducers can offer crucial advantages in comparison with conventional sensors and actuators. However, interfacing and packaging nanostructures into complete electronic systems is very complex. Here we describe a wet chemical method for cointegrating arrays of ZnO nanowires into systems on printed circuit boards (PCBs). First, we deposit on the PCB a MnOOH layer for reproducibly increasing the nanowires density. Afterwards, we numerically demonstrate that the ligand ethylenediamine, at the isoelectric point of the ZnO nanowires tips, can effectively control, at very low concentrations, both zinc speciation and supersaturation in the nutrient solution. Accordingly, we combine …

The Flipped Classroom: a Way to Decrease Boredom and Encourage Student Motivation.

Spin-flip M1 giant resonance as a challenge for Skyrme forces

2010

Despite a great success of the Skyrme mean-field approach in exploration of nuclear dynamics, it seems to fail in description of the spin-flip M1 giant resonance. The results for different Skyrme parameterizations are contradictory and poorly agree with experiment. In particular, there is no parameterization which simultaneously describes the one-peak gross structure of M1 strength in doubly magic nuclei and two-peak structure in heavy deformed nuclei. The reason of this mismatch could lie in an unsatisfactory treatment of spin correlations and spin-orbit interaction. We discuss the present status of the problem and possible ways of its solution. In particular, we inspect i) the interplay o…
