Nutritional parameters of commercially available milk samples by FTIR and chemometric techniques

2004

Abstract A chemometric study on the prediction of the main nutritional aspects of milk has been carried out by using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) attenuated total reflectance (ATR) measurements of commercially available milk samples of different types. Whole, semi and skimmed milks, enriched or not with calcium, vitamins or modified by alteration of lipid or sugar composition were considered. After evaluating different strategies for data acquisition and ATR cleaning between samples, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was carried out for classification of samples in order to choose the calibration set. The prediction capabilities of partial least squares (PLS) data treatm…

FT-IR quantitative analysis of solvent mixtures by the constant ratio method

1999

Abstract An analytical methodology to quantify compounds in complex mixtures by FTIR spectroscopy is proposed and the “Constant Ratio Method” (CRM) was developed. The addition of a standard to the sample allows us to establish a constant KMS characteristic of the Analyte/Standard system which can be employed as a quantification factor of the analyte in different samples . In the proposed method the measurements are independent of optical path length. This method has been successfully applied to quantify butylacetate and toluene in binary and tertiary samples and tertiary mixtures. Butylacetate/toluene/nujol have been resolved employing valeronitrile as standard, obtaining values for relativ…

Procedure for automated background correction in flow systems with infrared spectroscopic detection and changing liquid-phase composition

2009

This paper describes a partial least squares (PLS) based automatic procedure to correct for changes in the spectral contribution of the solvent or solvent mixtures from solute spectra recorded in these solvents. The procedure was developed for successful on-line Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) detection in gradient high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separations. It requires a reference FT-IR data set containing all possible combinations of the expected variation in solvent composition. Furthermore, a spectral region ( A) in these spectra is required where the solvents show absorption but the analytes do not. This is the case for the system ACN:H2O, an often-applied solvent mi…

Identification and determination of synthetic cannabinoids in herbal products by dry film attenuated total reflectance-infrared spectroscopy.

2017

A new procedure has been developed for the identification and quantitative determination of synthetic cannabinoids in illicit herbal preparations. The methodology is based on the use of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) measurement of sample extracts with 2-propanol drying 5µL of the extracts onto the ATR crystal. The qualitative identification was carried out on the 2-propanol extract after identification of the herbal matrix, followed by its subtraction and using a cut-off criterion of 75%. Quantitative determination was made by univariate calibration using the absorbance of the band located at 1520cm-1 of the spectrum. Four different cannabin…

New insights in the formation of silanol defects in silicalite-1 by water intrusion under high pressure.

2010

International audience; The "water-silicalite-1" system is known to act as a molecular spring. The successive intrusion-extrusion cycles of liquid water in small crystallites (6 × 3 × 0.5 μm(3)) of hydrophobic silicalite-1 were studied by volumetric and calorimetric techniques. The experiments displayed a decrease of the intrusion pressure between the first intrusion-extrusion cycle and the consecutive ones, whereas the extrusion pressures remained unchanged. However, neither XRD studies nor SEM observations revealed any structural and morphological modifications of silicalite-1 at the long-range order. Such a shift in the value of the intrusion pressure after the first water intrusion-extr…

Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier transform infrared analysis of the fermentation process of pineapple

2005

Abstract A direct and reagent free procedure has been developed to monitor the fermentation process of pine apple nectar using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-transform mid-infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and multivariate analysis. A classical 4 2 design for standards was employed for calibration using the information in the spectral range from 907 to 1531 cm −1 of the first order derivative spectra after mean centering of infrared data. The root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 0.040, 0.021, 0.063 and 0.074% w/w were obtained for glucose, fructose, saccharose and ethanol, respectively, and a mean relative validation error of 2.9, 2.1, 2.6 and 3.6% was achieved for glucose, fr…

Cubic smoothing splines background correction in on-line liquid chromatography–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry

2010

A background correction method for the on-line coupling of gradient liquid chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (LC-FTIR) is proposed. The developed approach applies univariate background correction to each variable (i.e. each wave number) individually. Spectra measured in the region before and after each peak cluster are used as knots to model the variation of the eluent absorption intensity with time using cubic smoothing splines (CSS) functions. The new approach has been successfully tested on simulated as well as on real data sets obtained from injections of standard mixtures of polyethylene glycols with four different molecular weights in methanol:water, 2-propano…

Fourier Transform Infrared Study of the Performance of Nanostructured TiO2 Particles for the Photocatalytic Oxidation of Gaseous Toluene

2001

Thermal and hydrothermal treatments have been applied to an amorphous TiO2 precursor for obtaining nanosized TiO2 particles (P11t and P11h, respectively) of different photocatalytic properties. The activity of these catalysts has been tested by performing the toluene oxidation in gas phase in a continuous photoreactor. A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) investigation of the catalysts under conditions prevailing during the test photoreaction has also been carried out. The photoreactivity results showed that CO2 was the main oxidation product and benzaldehyde a stable intermediate. Anatase P11t photoactivity was similar to that observed for commercial photocatalysts, while anatase P11h prese…

Preparation and characterisation of TiO2 (anatase) supported on TiO2 (rutile) catalysts employed for 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in aqueous medium…

1999

Abstract In this paper the preparation of two sets of polycrystalline photocatalysts prepared by supporting TiO2 (anatase) on TiO2 (rutile) or Al2O3 is reported. The powders were prepared by a wet impregnation method using titanium(IV) isopropylate. The impregnation was followed by thermal treatment and this procedure was repeated several times in order to obtain samples with progressively increasing amounts of TiO2 (anatase). The photocatalytic activity of all of the specimens was tested by carrying out the 4-nitrophenol photodegradation, used as a “probe” reaction, in aqueous medium and in different kinds of batch photoreactors. The solids were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), sp…

Preparation characterization and photocatalytic activity of polycrystalline ZnO/TiO2 systems. 2. Surface, bulk characterization, and 4-nitrophenol ph…

2001

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and monitoring of pyridine (py) and boric acid trimethyl ester (BATE) adsorption for determining surface acidity and basicity, respectively, were used to carry out further characterization of mixed ZnO/TiO2 polycrystalline solids prepared by different methods. Moreover, the powders were tested in a batch photoreactor for a probe reaction, i.e., 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in aqueous medium. ESR results indicated the presence of signals attributable to Zn+ species in ZnO/TiO2 (anatase) solids, while in ZnO/TiO2 (rutile) samples the presence of zinc induced only the formation of signals probably due…
