Democratic Dialogue and Development: An Intellectual Obituary of Björn Gustavsen

2018

Abstract Bjorn Gustavsen, with an original professional background as a lawyer and judge in his native Norway, had a formative role in organisational development processes in Norway, Sweden, Scandinavia and the European Union over four decades. Following in the tradition of Norwegian working life research by Trist and Thorsrud, he provided the conceptual framework and practical case studies which have driven major national and international programmes. He learned from different experience of organisational change in, for example, the USA and Japan, but he identified a distinctive way forward for the European Union, where he acted as a senior adviser. In contrast to conventional Taylorist to…

Models of an individual decision-making process related to ethical issues in business: the risk of framing effects

2009

Accepted version of an article published in the journal:International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics, Inderscience Publishers Published version available at: http://inderscience.metapress.com/link.asp?id=b0213827772k8p46 The theoretical paper at hand reviews 16 most often cited descriptive models of a manager's individual decision-making process related to ethical issues in business in general, international business and marketing fields in particular. The paper has a goal to point out the need to rephrase the dependent variable in the models in neutral terms to avoid framing effects in the three subject areas, as well as to rename the models accordingly. How environmental gain messages affect cause involvement, attitude and behavioural intentions: the moderating effects of CSR scepticism and biospheri…

2022

PurposeThis study examines the direct effect of outcome message frames (gain vs loss) on cause involvement and the moderating roles of consumers' corporate social responsibility (CSR) scepticism and biospheric values. Furthermore, the authors analyse (1) the effects of gain-framed messages on consumer attitudes towards an environmental cause (i.e. the use of reusable coffee cups) and towards the company promoting the cause (a coffee shop chain); (2) how consumer attitudes towards the cause affect their attitudes towards the company; and (3) how consumer attitudes towards both the cause and the company affect their behavioural intentions towards both the cause and the company.Design/methodol…

The psychometric properties of the italian version of the organizational culture assessment instrument (OCAI)

2016

The Competing Values Framework (CVF) has been widely used in organizational research to assess organizational culture. The best-known instrument derived from CVF model, the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI), which measures organizational culture according to four dimensions, is generally presented as valid and reliable. However, only few studies have been conducted for the purpose of validation considering both its ipsative and Likert version; also, this instrument has never been adapted to the Italian context. We used exploratory and confirmatory analyses to examine the underlying structure of data from an Italian adaptation of the OCAI. In the first study, we performed a…

SPAIN: Evolution and Characteristics of the Private Sport Sector – Focus on Fitness Centres and Gyms

2017

This chapter contains a description of the evolution and main characteristics of the private sport sector in Spain. The first section outlines a panoramic vision of the structure and organizational framework of the Spanish sport sector, illustrating the established supremacy of the public sector above the voluntary and private sectors. Next, an analysis is laid out, utilising data from Section 931 of the Central Business Register of the National Institute of Statistics. Organizational Persistence in Highly Institutionalized Environments: Unpacking the Relation Between Identity and Resilience

2021

AbstractDespite growing academic interest in understanding the conditions under which resilient organizations adapt to challenging circumstances, little attention to date has been paid to the role played by ‘soft’ factors such as identity as an enabler or property of resilient behaviour. In this chapter, we propose that different forms of legitimacy contribute to the framing of acceptable identities affecting the endurance of central elements over time, thus shaping resilience. By splitting up forms of legitimacy and by analysing elements of organizational identity separately, we provide a novel framework that enables a deeper understanding of identity formation processes in complex environ…

Employee Sensemaking on the Importance of Sustainability Reporting in Sustainability Identity Change

2017

This study examines employee sensemaking processes in order to understand the role of sustainability reporting in organizational identity change. Through an analysis of 52 interviews with employees in two Finnish companies, we develop sensemaking frames for understanding the role of sustainability reporting in organizational identity change. The three sensemaking frames are individualistic, relational and decoupled. Each of these sensemaking frames differs in stakeholder orientation. They indicate that sensemaking influences the interpretation of how important sustainability reporting is for organizational identity change towards sustainability. The study shows how the individualistic and r…

Towards a novel conceptual framework for understanding mergers in higher education

2015

ABSTRACTThis paper tries to develop a conceptual framework for a comprehensive understanding of the merger process, which is regarded as a matter of institutionalization of organizational innovation. In the framework, a number of factors affecting merger process or institutionalization of merger are identified, such as those related to environmental issues, economic benefits, institutional compatibility and human agency. The framework hopefully narrows our knowledge gap on theorizing innovation process, in general, and university merger, in particular. It also has a potential to better assist decision-makers and managers in planning and implementing university mergers.

Overview and performance comparison of grid synchronization algorithms

2014

Distributed power generation units are experiencing an impressive growth. Consequently, the amount of energy injected by non-linear loads as power converters is expected to increase. Stability and quality of the overall grid are heavily affected by performances of grid-side converters. In this paper, an overview of grid-synchronization technique is proposed. The grid-side inverter is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink® environment including current control and grid-synchronization section. Both Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) and Decoupled Double Synchronous Reference Frame (DDSRF) PLL algorithms are implemented. A performance comparison is carried out under ideal and unbalanced utility condi…
