Cardiovascular risk assessment beyond Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation: A role for organ damage markers

2012

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular risk assessment in the clinical practice is mostly based on risk charts, such as Framingham risk score and Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation (SCORE). These enable clinicians to estimate the impact of cardiovascular risk factors and assess individual cardiovascular risk profile. Risk charts, however, do not take into account subclinical organ damage, which exerts independent influence on risk and may amplify the estimated risk profile. Inclusion of organ damage markers in the assessment may thus contribute to improve this process. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the influence of implementation of SCORE charts with widely available indexes of organ damage, with t…

Practitioners’ Experiences of Social Media in Career Services

2015

A growing number of career practitioners and career centers are reaching out to individuals and community members in new ways by integrating various social media tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, into their professional practices (e.g., Dyson, 2012; Osborn & LoFrisco, 2012). To many, social media are simply online tools to share information and to communicate and socialize with one another. In the broader sense, social media is defined as a process whereby individuals and groups build a common understanding and meaning with contents, communities, and Web 2.0 technology (e.g., Ahlqvist, Back, Heinonen, & Halonen, 2010; Kangas, Toivonen, & Back, 2007).An extensive body of litera…

Can Do and Cannot Do – CEFR inspired examination and assessment in a Swedish higher education context

2018

The focus in this paper is on the introduction and implementation of learning outcomes based on the descriptors in the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR). It discusses reaction to the introduction by teacher educators as well as the influence on teacher assessment practice in courses for prospective teachers of English as a foreign language. The paper presents some of the results from a case study concerning changes made in connection with the Bologna process in a department of education within a university college in Sweden. The results show that the adoption of the CEFR descriptors was contested and had a minimal influence on assessment practice. The aim of the p…

La pianificazione ai fini della valorizzazione delle risorse legnose in Sicilia: un caso di studio su popolamenti di castagno dei Nebrodi

2019

In Sicily, forest planning still has too many gaps. This study proposes both to make a contribution to the current cognitive framework of the Nebrodi chestnut groves, and to draw up a management plan that is still lacking in order to identify forestry addresses and sustainable management necessary to maintain and defend these forest formations.

The European sTANDEM project for certification in medical English: standards, acceptability and transgression(s)

2014

In the global world of international communication, employers or institutions that wish to determine the language skills of non-native speakers of English usually turn to generalist proficiency tests such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the slightly more business-oriented TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). These tests enable test takers to certify that they have reached a certain level in skills needed in everyday life and, sometimes, workplace situations, but they do not assess language skills for specific purposes.Aware of this vacuum, a consortium of European teachers/researchers and international experts in the domain of medical English unde…

Granice romantyzmu w dziejach polskiej komedii według dziewiętnastowiecznej krytyki krajowej

2021

Podjęta w niniejszym artykule próba rekonstrukcji ówczesnych niewypowiedzianych wyobrażeń o tych znaczeniach i granicach wiedzie w kierunku formuły chronologicznie rozpiętej między „kosmopolityzmem”, przypisywanym wtedy klasycystycznej komedii XVIII w. i zwalczonym rzekomo dopie…

A robust nanoporous supramolecular metal–organic framework based on ionic hydrogen bonds

2014

International audience; Hydrogen-bond assembly of tripod-like organic cations [H3-MeTrip]3+ (1,2,3-tri(4′-pyridinium-oxyl)-2-methylpropane) and the hexa-anionic complex [Zr2(oxalate)7]6− leads to a structurally, thermally, and chemically robust porous 3D supramolecular framework showing channels of 1 nm in width. Permanent porosity has been ascertained by analyzing the material at the single-crystal level during a sorption cycle. The framework crystal structure was found to remain the same for the native compound, its activated phase, and after guest resorption. The channels exhibit affinities for polar organic molecules ranging from simple alcohols to aniline. Halogenated molecules and I2 …

Expanding the NUIG MOF family: synthesis and characterization of new MOFs for selective CO2 adsorption, metal ion removal from aqueous systems, and d…

2021

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their use in a wide range of environmental, industrial and biomedical applications. The employment of benzophenone-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (bphdcH2) in MOF chemistry provided access to the 3D mixed metal MOFs [CoNa2(bphdc)2(DMF)2]n (NUIG2) and [ZnK2(bphdc)2(DMF)2]n (NUIG3), and the 2D homometallic MOF [Co2(OH)(bphdcH)2(DMF)2(H2O)2]n(OH)·DMF (1·DMF). 1·DMF is based on a dinuclear SBU and consists of interpenetrating networks with an sql topology. Dc magnetic susceptibility studies were carried out in 1·DMF and revealed the presence of weak antiferomagnetic exchange interactions between the metal centr…
