Maternal effects in quail and zebra finches: behavior and hormones.

2013

8 pages; International audience; Maternal effects are influences of parents on offspring phenotype occurring through pathways other than inherited DNA. In birds, two important routes for such transmission are parental behavior and non-DNA egg constituents such as yolk hormones. Offspring traits subject to parental effects include behavior and endocrine function. Research from the Adkins-Regan lab has used three avian species to investigate maternal effects related to hormones and behavior. Experiments with chickens and Japanese quail have shown that maternal sex steroids can influence sex determination to produce biased offspring sex ratios. Because all birds have a ZZ/ZW chromosomal sex de…

Pressure Shift and Gravitational Red Shift of Balmer Lines in White Dwarfs. Rediscussion

2015

The Stark-induced shift and asymmetry, the so-called pressure shift (PS) of $H_\alpha$ and $H_\beta$ Balmer lines in spectra of DA white dwarfs (WDs), as masking effects in measurements of the gravitational red shift in WDs, have been examined in detail. The results are compared with our earlier ones from before a quarter of a century (Grabowski et al. 1987, hereafter ApJ'87; Madej and Grabowski 1990). In these earlier papers, as a dominant constituent of the Balmer-line-profiles, the standard, symmetrical Stark line profiles, shifted as the whole by PS-effect, were applied to all spectrally active layers of the WD atmosphere. At present, in each of the WD layers, the Stark-line-profiles (e…

Determination of enrichment factors for modified RNA in MeRIP experiments

2019

In the growing field of RNA modification, precipitation techniques using antibodies play an important role. However, little is known about their specificities and protocols are missing to assess their effectiveness. Here we present a method to assess enrichment factors after MeRIP-type pulldown experiments, here exemplified with a commercial antibody against N6-methyladenosine (m6A). Testing different pulldown and elution conditions, we measure enrichment factors of 4-5 using m6A-containing mRNAs against an unmodified control of identical sequence. Both types of mRNA carry 32P labels at different nucleotides, allowing their relative quantification in a mixture after digestion to nucleotides…

Simplified equivalent finite element modelling of concrete-filled steel tubular K-joints with and without studs

2022

Concrete Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) K-joints employed for truss structures gained high interest in the last years due to their widespread use in engineering practice. The overall performances of these joints can be efficiently improved by using steel studs welded in the inner surface of the steel chord filled with the concrete, avoiding punching shear failure, and improving the overall strength and ductility. However, a reliable prediction of the structural behavior of the joints is outmost of importance for the assessment of the capacity of new and existing structures, and there are no standardized design methods nowadays. In this paper, the structural performances of CFST K-joints with a…

Dietary exposure in utero and during lactation to a mixture of genistein and an anti-androgen fungicide in a rat mammary carcinogenesis model

2015

Endocrine disruptors may play substantial roles in the high incidence of breast cancer. We previously described how early exposure to the mixture of phytoestrogen genistein (G) and the anti-androgen vinclozolin (V) affects peripubertal mammary development. This study evaluates the carcinogenic potential of exposure to V alone or associated with G from conception until weaning in Wistar rats. Dams were exposed to V, G or GV during pregnancy/lactation. At PND50 offspring were treated with DMBA[7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene]. V or GV maternal exposure decreased number of DMBA-induced mammary tumors in the offspring, without significant modifications in tumor incidence, multiplicity and latenc…

MAC–Engine: a new architecture for executing MAC algorithms on commodity WiFi hardware

2011

In this demo, we prove that the flexibility supported by off–the–shelf IEEE 802.11 hardware can be significantly ex- tended if we move the control of the MAC programming interface from the driver to the firmware, i.e. from the host CPU to the card CPU. To this purpose, we introduce the concept of MAC–Engine, that is an executor of Pro- grammable Finite State Machines (PFSM) implemented at the firmware level: we show how the card itself can support different protocol logics thanks to PFSM bytecode repre- sentations that can be dynamically injected inside the card memory at run-time without incurring in down time issues or network disconnect events. We provide different PFSM examples in order…

Pratique de l'enseignement de l'anglais dans les facultés de médecine en France métropolitaine

2007

Abstract English lessons have been compulsory in French medical schools since the 18th March 1992 bill. Objectives: The aim of this work is to describe the characteristics of this teaching programme as it exists in 2005. Methods: A questionnaire designed by experts in the teaching of medical English was sent to the 41 medical schools in Metropolitan France. The questionnaire covered five different areas (the number of hours of lessons, of students and of teachers; evaluation and marking methods; lesson contents and pedagogical methods; student and teacher profiles; the teaching of English for postgraduate students). Results: Twenty-six questionnaires have been returned and evaluated, which …

Social impacts of biodiversity offsetting: A review

2022

Biodiversity offsetting is the widely studied last step of the mitigation hierarchy. Despite numerous studies and the methodological development completed for biodiversity calculations, the human aspect remains unsolved. Biodiversity conservation is typically governed at national or state levels, but the harm caused to biodiversity as well as people occurs locally. In biodiversity offsetting, biodiversity values can be relocated far from the original area, but relocating the values people hold regarding their nearby nature may not be possible. Acknowledging the local people's hopes and values may further complicate biodiversity offsetting, therefore it emphasises even more the need to avoid…

Towards multilingual competence: examining beliefs and agency in first year university students’ language learner biographies

2021

As working life across the world is increasingly multilingual, multicultural and multidisciplinary, higher education language teaching is faced with a challenge of how to prepare students for it. Many universities have recently developed multilingual pedagogies but central to their success is learners’ perceptions of these practices. To fill this gap, this article explores first year university students’ language learner biographies to gain insight into how learners construct their linguistic realities. The biographies were studied with discourse analytical methods to examine the participants’ beliefs about language learning and their sense of agency in it. The results reveal that participa…
