Electrode–Electrolyte Compatibility in Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells: Investigation of the LSM–LNC Interface with X-ray Microspectroscopy
2015
Ca:LaNbO4 (LNC) constitutes the last real breakthrough in high-temperature proton conductors, with better chemical and mechanical stability with respect to cerate and zirconate perovskites. However, the low amount of bivalent dopant that can be hosted in the LaNbO4 matrix poses a limit to the proton concentration in the electrolyte. Using synchrotron X-ray microspectroscopy, we investigated the compatibility of annealed LNC/LSM electrolyte/cathode bilayers for proton-conducting SOFCs. The element maps are complemented by microEXAFS and microXANES, giving information on the fate of different cations after diffusion. The X-ray microspectroscopy approach described here is applied for the first…
Representativeness of Extracts of Offset Paper Packaging and Analysis of the Main Odor-Active Compounds
2004
Packagings often carry odors due to the support and printing inks. The aim of the investigation was to define a representative solvent-free extract of paper-based packaging materials printed by the offset process, for the identification of the odor-causing volatile compounds. Static headspace and solid-phase microextraction were the two applied extraction methods. Representativeness tests showed that the odor of the PDMS fiber extract gave satisfying odor similarities with the original packaging. The sample incubation was performed at 40 degrees C for 30 min, whereas the extraction time was 3 min at 40 degrees C. Extracts of both the nonprinted and printed papers of different batches were a…
Nuclear structure functions at a future electron-ion collider
2017
The quantitative knowledge of heavy nuclei's partonic structure is currently limited to rather large values of momentum fraction $x$---robust experimental constraints below $x\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ at low resolution scale ${Q}^{2}$ are particularly scarce. This is in sharp contrast to the free proton's structure which has been probed in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) measurements down to $x\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at perturbative resolution scales. The construction of an electron-ion collider (EIC) with a possibility to operate with a wide variety of nuclei, will allow one to explore the low-$x$ region in much greater detail. In the present paper we simula…
Probing the small- x nuclear gluon distributions with isolated photons at forward rapidities in p+Pb collisions at the LHC
2014
Inclusive direct photon production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC is studied within the NLO perturbative QCD. Our aim is to quantify the dominant $x$ regions probed at different rapidities and to identify the best conditions for testing the nuclear gluon parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at small $x$. A comparison to the inclusive pion production reveals that from these two processes the photons carry more sensitivity to the small-$x$ partons and that this sensitivity can be further increased by imposing an isolation cut for the photon events. The details of the isolation criteria, however, seem to make only a small difference to the studied $x$ sensitivity and have practically no effect…
Progress in neuropathology of the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses.
1999
Abstract Since the last, 6th, International Congress on Neuronal Ceroid-Lipofuscinoses, neuropathological advances in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) have been made in several areas: (1) In adult NCL (ANCL) lipopigments have now been repeatedly confirmed to contain subunit c of mitochondrial ATP synthase and even sphingolipid activators (saposins). ANCL lipopigments have also been confirmed in extracerebral tissues including skin, skeletal muscle, and spleen, but not yet lymphocytes (2). Among circulating blood cells not only B cells and subclasses of T lymphocytes, i.e., CD4 + , CD8 + , and CD56 cells, but also monocytes have been found to contain NCL lipopigments, indicating that thi…

Maternal complications in pregnancy and wheezing in early childhood: a pooled analysis of 14 birth cohorts
2015
Background: Evidence on the effect of maternal complications in pregnancy on wheezing in offspring is still insufficient. Methods: A pooled analysis was performed on individual participant data from fourteen European birth cohorts to assess the relationship between several maternal pregnancy complications and wheezing symptoms in the offspring. Exposures of interest included hypertension and preeclampsia, diabetes, as well as pre-pregnancy overweight (body mass index between 25 and 29.9) and obesity (body mass index >= 30) compared with normal weight (body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9). Outcomes included both ever and recurrent wheezing from birth up to 12-24 months of age. Cohort-speci…
Maternal Vitamin D Status in Pregnancy and Risk of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Wheezing, and Asthma in Offspring
2011
Background Adequate vitamin D status in mothers during pregnancy may influence the health status of the child later in life. We assessed whether maternal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations in pregnancy are associated with risk of lower respiratory tract infections, wheezing, and asthma in the offspring. Methods Data were obtained from 1724 children of the INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project, a population-based birth cohort study. Maternal circulating 25(OH)D concentrations were measured in pregnancy (mean gestational age = 12.6 [SD = 2.5] weeks). When the child was age 1 year, parents were asked if their child had a physician-confirmed history of lower respiratory…
The Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) birth cohort study: Rationale, design, and methods.
2021
Background Primary prevention strategies for asthma are lacking. Its inception probably starts in utero and/or during the early postnatal period as the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) paradigm suggests. Objectives The main objective of Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) cohort study is to unravel whether the following factors contribute causally to the developmental origins of asthma: (1) maternal obesity/adiposity and foetal growth; (2) maternal and child nutrition; (3) outdoor air pollution; (4) endocrine disruptors; and (5) maternal psychological stress. Maternal and offspring biological samples are used to assess changes in offspring microbiome, immune system,…
