An age-adapted plyometric exercise program improves dynamic strength, jump performance and functional capacity in older men either similarly or more …
2020
Power declines at a greater rate during ageing and is more relevant for functional deterioration than either loss of maximum strength or muscle mass. Human movement typically consists of stretch-shortening cycle action. Therefore, plyometric exercises, using an eccentric phase quickly followed by a concentric phase to optimize power production, should resemble daily function more than traditional resistance training, which primarily builds force production capacity in general. However, it is unclear whether older adults can sustain such high-impact training. This study compared the effects of plyometric exercise (PLYO) on power, force production, jump and functional performance to tradition…
Transnasal endoscopy for direct visual control of esophageal stent placement without fluoroscopy
2012
Placement of self-expanding metal stents (SEMSs) is a well-established treatment for esophageal stenosis and postoperative anastomotic leaks. Conventional endoscopic procedures for SEMS placement require fluoroscopic guidance, but transnasal endoscopy (TNE) with ultraslim endoscopes may allow precise stent release under direct visual control without the need for fluoroscopy. This prospectively collected data investigated the feasibility and safety of TNE-guided SEMS placement without fluoroscopy. Between March 2009 and February 2011, 20 consecutive patients underwent TNE-guided SEMS placement without fluoroscopy. The technical success rate was 100 % and no fluoroscopy was required during th…
Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) Cell Expression During Adjuvant Treatment After Transurethral Resection for Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cance…
2019
Abstract Background The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) measurement in bladder washings of patients affected by non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and its prognostic role in identifying risk subgroups and predicting disease recurrence and progression. Patients and Methods Patients with NMIBC treated with transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) from 2012 to 2015 were enrolled. Samples of bladder washings were collected and stored at −80°C until RNA extraction. The cDNA obtained from RNA was used to perform a gene expression analysis by a real time polymerase chain reaction. Results An adequate cellular pellet was…
A tissue microarray study of osteosarcoma: histopathologic and immunohistochemical validation of xenotransplanted tumors as preclinical models.
2010
Osteosarcomas (OS) are aggressive neoplasms with a wide range of morphologic patterns.OS cases (primary and xenotransplanted) with paraffin blocks available were collected and included in tissue microarrays (TMAs). A morphologic evaluation including the different passages in mice was carried out according to the new WHO criteria. In addition, TMAs were analyzed with a wide panel of immunohistochemical (IHC) markers (osteonectin, osteocalcin, cytokeratin, S100, Sox-9, Ki-67, Bcl-2, p53, p16, survivin, CD99, and caveolin-1).A total of 61 cases were collected. The distribution of the cases according to the histopathologic pattern was: 38 osteogenic OS, 8 primary chondrogenic OS, 2 primary telan…
On the threshold of effective well infant nursery hearing screening in Western Sicily.
2012
Abstract Objective To determine the feasibility and effectiveness of well-infant nursery hearing screening programme for the early identification of hearing impairment, based on transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) with a high “screen sensitivity” reducing the number of more expensive secondary level exams. Methods The newborns were screened by non-specialist health workers in well babies nursery at the twentieth day of life for 6 years consecutive. Based on PASS/FAIL criteria and presence/absence of audiological risk factors the newborns were divided into four groups each one with its personal step programme: G1 – PASS without risk factor, free to go home; G2 – PASS with risk fact…
Standardized weaning of infants <32 weeks of gestation from continuous positive airway pressure – a feasibility study
2015
The practice of weaning premature infants from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) varies considerably and is usually performed without written standards. In this study, the feasibility of a standardized weaning approach was evaluated. In a quasi-experimental design, data from a prospective, post-intervention cohort (n=41) were compared to data from a pre-intervention cohort (n=36). Standardized weaning was feasible but no significant differences in short-term respiratory outcomes were observed. Weaning from CPAP was achieved at 32.1 ± 1.6 (post-intervention) versus 32.5 ± 2.3 weeks (pre-intervention) postmenstrual age. More rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are necessary before …
Exercise stress CMR reveals reduced aortic distensibility and impaired right-ventricular adaptation to exercise in patients with repaired tetralogy o…
2018
International audience; The aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of exercise cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (RTOF) and to assess right and left ventricular adaptation and aortic wall response to exercise in comparison with volunteers.Methods11 RTOF and 11 volunteers underwent prospective CMR at rest and during exercise. A supine bicycle ergometer was employed to reach twice the resting heart rate during continuous exercise, blood pressure and heart rate were recorded. Bi-ventricular parameters and aortic stiffness were assessed using accelerated cine sequences and flow-encoding CMR. A t-test was used to compare values between group…
T Helper Cell Subsets in the Pleural Fluid of Tuberculous Patients Differentiate Patients With Non-Tuberculous Pleural Effusions
2021
BackgroundTuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) is one of the most common forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (Tb). Patients with TPE or malignant pleural effusions (MPE) frequently have a similar lymphocytic pleural fluid profile. Since the etiology of PE in various diseases is different, identifying the cellular components may provide diagnostic clues for understanding the pathogenesis.ObjectiveWe determined the frequency of T helper (Th) subtypes in the PEs for differentiation of Tb and non-Tb patients.MethodsThirty patients with TPE, 30 patients with MPE, 14 patients with empyema (EMP), and 14 patients with parapneumonic effusion (PPE) were enrolled between December 2018 and December 2019…
Efficacy of fibrin sealant in thyroid surgery. Is drainage still necessary?
2019
The routinely use of drains in thyroid surgery is a traditional and well-defined method, even if there is no clear evidence of significant improvement in patients outcomes. Aim of our study is to define the feasibility, safety and cost- effectiveness of fibrin sealant in total thyroidectomy in order to overcome the use of drains. We enrolled 262 patients (45 men and 217 women, mean age 54.7 yrs) undergone total thyroidectomy in University Hospital of Palermo (Italy), between July 2015 and October 2017. We randomized patients into group A (drain) and group B (no drain, fibrin sealant application). We registered statistical difference between the two groups in mean operative time, visual analog…
Adjunct Perfusion Branch for Reduction of Spinal Cord Ischemia in the Endovascular Repair of Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysms
2017
Background To analyze utilization of a perfusion branch for temporary sac perfusion to reduce the spinal cord ischemia (SCI) in the endovascular repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs). Methods Between January 2012 and August 2016, 30 patients (18, men; median age 72 years) were treated for TAAAs with total endovascular repair using customized branched/fenestrated endografts in our institution. The median aneurysm size was 6.6 cm. Types of TAAA were: type I, 9 (30%), type II, 5 (16.6%), type III, 4 (13.3%), type IV, 6 (20%), and type V, 6 (20%). Ten patients received a perfusion branch to create an intentional endoleak, which was occluded with vascular plugs in mean interval ti…
