Soliton rains in a fiber laser: An experimental study

2010

Rains of solitons constitute a class of nonlinear dynamics of dissipative soliton ensembles that we briefly reported in Opt. Express 17, 11776 (2009) from a fiber laser experiment. The existence of a relatively intense noisy background together with several tens of soliton pulses aggregated in a condensed soliton phase constitutes a necessary condition for their appearance. New soliton pulses form spontaneously from the background fluctuations and drift until they reach the condensed soliton phase. We here relate in detail the experimental conditions under which soliton rains manifest and their key features, describe related dynamics observed in their vicinity, and propose an explanation fo…

THE “ENTREPRENEURIAL UNIVERSITY”: A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN MANAGERIAL AND ORGANISATIONAL FEATURES TOWARDS THE DESIGN OF PLANNING & CONTROL …

2013

In the last decade, European academic institutions have been affected by significant reforms aimed to improve their own performance levels. The reason for these reforms has been inspired by various factors, such as budgetary restrictions imposed by National Governments and the “marketisation” of the Higher Education sector. This has led European universities to increase their autonomy and accountability to successfully perform and compete in a worldwide competitive system. Both autonomy and accountability have involved a greater emphasis on performance management and Planning & Control (P&C) systems. In the light of the new institutional and competitive context, the aim of this paper is to …

CT Radiomic Features and Clinical Biomarkers for Predicting Coronary Artery Disease

2023

AbstractThis study was aimed to investigate the predictive value of the radiomics features extracted from pericoronaric adipose tissue — around the anterior interventricular artery (IVA) — to assess the condition of coronary arteries compared with the use of clinical characteristics alone (i.e., risk factors). Clinical and radiomic data of 118 patients were retrospectively analyzed. In total, 93 radiomics features were extracted for each ROI around the IVA, and 13 clinical features were used to build different machine learning models finalized to predict the impairment (or otherwise) of coronary arteries. Pericoronaric radiomic features improved prediction above the use of risk factors alon…

Biological properties of extracellular vesicles and their physiological functions

2015

The authors wish to thank Dr R Simpson and Dr D Taylor for critical reading of the manuscript and acknowledge the Horizon 2020 European Cooperation in Science and Technology programme and its support of our European Network on Microvesicles and Exosomes in Health & Disease (ME-HaD; BM1202 www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/bmbs/Actions/BM1202). In the past decade, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been recognized as potent vehicles of intercellular communication, both in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. This is due to their capacity to transfer proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, thereby influencing various physiological and pathological functions of both recipient and parent cells. While intensive invest…

La bioinformática en la práctica médica: Integración de datos biológicos y clínicos

2008

The aim of our work is to describe essential aspects of Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics and Biomedical Informatics, that are used in biomedical research and clinical practice. These disciplines have emerged from the need to find new scientific and technical approaches to manage, store, analyze and report data generated in clinical practice and molecular biology and other medical specialties. It can be also useful to integrate research information generated in different areas of health care. Moreover, these disciplines are interdisciplinary and integrative, two key features not shared by other areas of medical knowledge. Finally, when Bioinformatics and Biomedical Informatics approach to…

The ridge in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

2010

We show that the key features of the CMS result on the ridge correlation seen for high multiplicity events in sqrt(s)=7TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC can be understood in the Color Glass Condensate framework of high energy QCD. The same formalism underlies the explanation of the ridge events seen in A+A collisions at RHIC, albeit it is likely that flow effects may enhance the magnitude of the signal in the latter.

Family Register in British English: The First Approach to its Systematic Study

2015

The present study looks into an unexplored area of research as it is the family register. An alternative to recording family conversations is the use of popular TV series, as their success lies in the audience s identification with their characters and their communicative style. This work analyses two highly popular series in UK. The results suggest that this register has its own communicative richness and internal variation, the knowledge of which may be of great help for students and professionals travelling to English-speaking countries and living or relating with native speakers in family environments.

'Big Brother' Germany and Spain: a Linguistic Characterization from a Theory of Register

2020

Prognostic indicators in pediatric clinically isolated syndrome

2017

To assess prognostic factors for a second clinical attack and a first disability worsening event in pediatric clinically isolated syndrome (pCIS) suggestive of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. Objective: To assess prognostic factors for a second clinical attack and a first disability-worsening event in pediatric clinically isolated syndrome (pCIS) suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods: A cohort of 770 pCIS patients was followed up for at least 10 years. Cox proportional hazard models and Recursive Partitioning and Amalgamation (RECPAM) tree-regression were used to analyze data. Results: In pCIS, female sex and a multifocal onset were risk factors for a second clinical att…

European Economic Ethics Research

2020

The purpose of the European Economic Community’s founders was not only ‘mercantilist’, but ‘economic’, in the broader sense of the term ‘economics’. If there has been a specific model of Europe, it has been the social market economy. But the crisis of the welfare state has raised doubts about key features of that model. Does Europe have anything particular to offer in the economic realm? The approaches of economic ethics that have been developed in Europe have a lot to say in the formation of a ‘Euroethos’. The article tries to show the main European approaches and to delineate the traits of a European proposal.
