Stilistiskie izteiksmes līdzekļi pārtikas produktu reklāmas plakātos

2021

Inverting the Wollaston Illusion: Gaze Direction Attracts Perceived Head Orientation

2021

In the early 19th century, William H. Wollaston impressed the Royal Society of London with engravings of portraits. He manipulated facial features, such as the nose, and thereby dramatically changed the perceived gaze direction, although the eye region with iris and eye socket had remained unaltered. This Wollaston illusion can be thought of as head orientation attracting perceived gaze direction when the eye region is unchanged. In naturalistic viewing, the eye region changes with head orientation and typically produces a repulsion effect. Here we explore if there is a flip side to the illusion. Does the gaze direction also alter the perceived direction of the head? We used copies of the o…

Late-glacial to Holocene aeolian deposition in northeastern Europe - The timing of sedimentation at the Iisaku site (NE Estonia)

2015

Abstract The Late-glacial and Holocene aeolian inland dune complex at Iisaku (NE Estonia) has been investigated using an accurate and detailed compilation of the sedimentary properties and chronological framework. The quartz grains forming the dunes are very variable, reflecting aeolian, weathering, and periglacial conditions, both prior and after deposition. Although the morphological forms and the sedimentary record point to a dune-like environment, the transport record reflects either a short transport time or/and distance, and a contribution from neighbouring sedimentary environments. Dune development in the area was strongly controlled by the formation of the Baltic Ice Lake (BIL) in f…

Drumlins and related glaciogenic landforms of the Madliena Tilted plain, Central Latvian Lowland

2012

This paper presents new results on the morphometry and spatial distribution of the glaciogenic landforms and ice flow directions in the Madliena Tilted Plain that occupies the eastern part of the Central Latvian Lowland. Landforms were investigated by using topographic maps at scales of 1:25 000 and 1:10 000. There were identified and mapped 1461 glaciogenic landforms such as drumlins, end moraine ridges, eskers, ribbed moraines, marginal ridges, lateral shear margin moraines and recessional formations. Particular attention is given to the morphometry, spatial distribution, and the internal structure of drumlins. Glacial landscape of the study area was formed by the Zemgale ice lobe in cour…

“Mouth Actions as Gestures in Sign Language” pp 104-123

2008

The present study investigates the nature of mouth actions in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and shows how the manual and the oral modality can be integrated when the visual-gestural channel is chosen for communication. Finally, the role played by mouth actions in sign language will be investigated and paralleled to co-speech gestures by re-working Kendon’s continuum in order to show how orality could become gestural when co-occurring with signing.

Automatic Influences of Priming on Prosocial Behavior

2013

Literature on the automaticity of social behavior indicates that, in some circumstances, priming a concept automatically activates related behavioral schemas. Previous research studies have used priming techniques to increase willingness to help, but most of these have simply measured intention to engage in prosocial behavior rather than real helping behavior. Two different studies investigated the effect of priming the concept of prosocial behavior on real helping behavior. After priming prosociality through a scrambled sentences test, participants were shown to increase their donation rate after a direct request coming from an experimenter's confederate (Study 1) and to spontaneously help…

Hemophilia A and Hemophilia B

2019

Abstract While observed for centuries, the diseases that we call hemophilia have been clarified and elucidated in the past 50 to 60 years. We now know the genetics and transmission of the various types of hemophilia and are greatly facilitated by their laboratory features. Various hemorrhagic manifestations of the various hemophilias include hemarthrosis, intramuscular hemorrhage, retroperitoneal bleeding, retropharyngeal bleeding, and central nervous system hemorrhage. In the past, trauma and surgery were associated with serious or fatal bleeding. Now, multiple agents are available to treat or prophylax against hemorrhage. Specific diagnoses require specific therapeutics. Fatal hemorrhagic…

Heterogeneous Photocatalysis for Selective Formation of High-Value-Added Molecules: Some Chemical and Engineering Aspects

2018

This review deals with the parameters that influence heterogeneous photocatalysis (PC) for selective synthesis of high-value chemicals by itself or in combination with other technologies. In particular, the parameters related to the photocatalysts, such as crystallinity degree, type of polymorph, surface acid-base properties, exposure of particular crystalline facets, coupling of different semiconductors, position of the valence and conduction band edge, addition of doping agents, and those related to the reaction system, such as setup configuration and reactor geometry, type of solvent, type and amount of photocatalyst, affecting the selectivity toward specific products are described and d…

Groove as a multidimensional participatory experience

2023

Groove is a popular and widely used concept in the field of music. Yet, its precise definition remains elusive. Upon closer inspection, groove appears to be used as an umbrella term with various connotations depending on the musical era, the musical context, and the individual using the term. Our aim in this article was to explore different definitions and connotations of the term groove so as to reach a more detailed understanding of it. Consequently, in an online survey, 88 participants provided free-text descriptions of the term groove. A thematic analysis revealed that groove is a multifaceted phenomenon, and participants’ descriptions fit into two main categories: music- and experience…

Where do my words come from? : towards methods for analyzing word choice in primary level writing

2019

Few intellectual tools exist for characterizing word choice development in primary level writing. The aim of this study was to identify categories for describing the development of word choice in young children’s narrative writings. Such categories may be used to demonstrate how word choice develops within writing practices of primary classrooms. The analysis was based on thirty texts from six students studying Norwegian as a first-language and collected from mid-year second grade through fourth grade utilizing case-study methodology. In the students’ classroom, considerable emphasis was put on using literature to establish an intertextual basis for student learning. The students’ texts wer…
