An artistic approach to neurofeedback for emotion regulation

2019

AbstractNeurofeedback has been shown to be a promising tool for learning to regulate one’s own emotions in healthy populations and in neuropsychiatric disorders. While it has been suggested that neurofeedback performance improves when sensory feedback is related to the pathology under consideration, it is still difficult to represent in real time a proper feedback representative of our emotional state. Since emotion is a central part of people’s dealings with artworks, we have initiated a collaboration between neuroscientists and artists to develop a visual representation of emotions that can be used in neurofeedback experiences. As a result of this collaboration, emotions were represented …

Entity Recommendation for Everyday Digital Tasks

2021

| openaire: EC/H2020/826266/EU//CO-ADAPT Recommender systems can support everyday digital tasks by retrieving and recommending useful information contextually. This is becoming increasingly relevant in services and operating systems. Previous research often focuses on specific recommendation tasks with data captured from interactions with an individual application. The quality of recommendations is also often evaluated addressing only computational measures of accuracy, without investigating the usefulness of recommendations in realistic tasks. The aim of this work is to synthesize the research in this area through a novel approach by (1) demonstrating comprehensive digital activity monitor…

Learning With Context Feedback Loop for Robust Medical Image Segmentation

2021

Deep learning has successfully been leveraged for medical image segmentation. It employs convolutional neural networks (CNN) to learn distinctive image features from a defined pixel-wise objective function. However, this approach can lead to less output pixel interdependence producing incomplete and unrealistic segmentation results. In this paper, we present a fully automatic deep learning method for robust medical image segmentation by formulating the segmentation problem as a recurrent framework using two systems. The first one is a forward system of an encoder-decoder CNN that predicts the segmentation result from the input image. The predicted probabilistic output of the forward system …

Feedback Classification and Optimal Control with Applications to the Controlled Lotka-Volterra Model

2023

Let M be a σ-compact C^∞ manifold of dimension n ≥ 2 and consider a single-input control system: ẋ(t) = X (x(t)) + u(t) Y (x(t)), where X , Y are C^∞ vector fields on M. We prove that there exist an open set of pairs (X , Y ) for the C^∞ –Whitney topology such that they admit singular abnormal rays so that the spectrum of the projective singular Hamiltonian dynamics is feedback invariant. It is applied to controlled Lotka–Volterra dynamics where such rays are related to shifted equilibria of the free dynamics.

Flexible negotiation process to adhere to human preferences; A case of work equipment risk assessment

2021

Making structured and reliable decisions on relevant business problems often requires expert assistance. In decision making practice, experts are frequently required to pairwise compare elements to support the decision made. This paper proposes a user-friendly negotiation procedure to establish an effective feedback relation with experts to globally increase the consistency of their pairwise comparisons judgments, where necessary. To this aim, we develop a flexible tool, which makes use of an algebraic consistency-improving algorithm and a sensitivity analysis technique to identify which judgments contribute most to inconsistency. The framework pursues friendliness for the involved decision…

The entangled relationship between cilia and actin

2020

Primary cilia are microtubule-based sensory cell organelles that are vital for tissue and organ development. They act as an antenna, receiving and transducing signals, enabling communication between cells. Defects in ciliogenesis result in severe genetic disorders collectively termed ciliopathies. In recent years, the importance of the direct and indirect involvement of actin regulators in ciliogenesis came into focus as it was shown that F-actin polymerisation impacts ciliation. The ciliary basal body was further identified as both a microtubule and actin organising centre. In the current review, we summarize recent studies on F-actin in and around primary cilia, focusing on different acti…

2023

The article deals with interactional processes in video conferences that took place as part of an international training and further education event for DaF-teachers. The focus is on showing how the teachers request feedback from each other in relation to the topics to be discussed and in what form they receive it. Furthermore, the role of moderation should also be examined. The aim of the study is to reveal interaction patterns that characterize the behavior of teachers in the context of digital education in order to promote a professional feedback culture when dealing with lesson observation.

Pulse trains produced by phase-modulation of ultrashort optical pulses: tailoring and characterization

2009

1094-4087; In this paper, creation of pulse doublets and pulse trains by spectral phase modulation of ultrashort optical pulses is investigated. Pulse doublets with specific features are generated through step-like and triangular spectral phase modulation, whereas sequences of pulses with controllable delay and amplitude are produced via sinusoidal phase modulations. A temporal analysis of this type of tailored pulses is exposed and a complete characterization with the SPIDER technique (Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-field Reconstruction) is presented.
