Nutrition in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer. Malnutrition is common in patients with head and neck cancer. Due to natural course of disease or therapy, malnutrition may increase. This leads to a reduced prognosis, quality of life, and should be considered in early stages of the disease. First choice is an enteral feeding via a nasogastral feeding tube or a PEG. In special cases a parenteral nutrition may be necessary.

Die direkte perkutane radiologische Jejunostomie (PRJ) und Duodenostomie: eine retrospektive Auswertung

Purpose: To present our experience with direct percutaneous radiologic duodenostomy and jejunostomy (PRJ) for alimentation. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study identified 24 patients who had undergone percutaneous jejunostomy or duodenostomy guided by CT and fluoroscopy over a period of 9 years. Whenever possible, the jejunum was inflated with a 5 French diagnostic catheter and jejunopexy was performed using Cope anchors (T-fasteners). A 12 to 14 French locking pigtail drain was inserted for alimentation. In 8 patients, percutaneous direct jejunostomy was performed using only fluoroscopy. Tryptophan Fortification of Adapted Formula Increases Plasma Tryptophan Concentrations to Levels Not Different from Those Found in Breast-Fed Infants

Several recent studies have demonstrated significantly lower plasma total tryptophan concentrations in formula-fed than in breast-fed infants. We have measured preprandial plasma amino acid concentrations in infants breast-fed or fed a formula with a protein concentration of 1.57 g/dl and with a whey/casein ratio of 60:40 or a formula with a protein concentration of 1.37 g/dl and a whey/casein ratio of 40:60 and fortified with 10 mg/dl (15 mg/100 kcal) of tryptophan. Pheromones presumably secreted by mating conspecifics – as well as homogenates containing tissue that is homologous with the atrial gland – increase the time that Aplysia fasciata spend feeding. This effect is caused by increasing the number of feeding episodes initiated in response to food, whereas the duration of a feeding bout remains unchanged. The increase in the number of feeding episodes is related to increases in head waving and crawling, i.e., appetitive movements that bring the animal into contact with food, as well as an increase in the responsiveness to food after it is contacted. Agouti-related peptide-expressing neurons are mandatory for feeding.

Multiple hormones controlling energy homeostasis regulate the expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. Nevertheless, inactivation of the genes encoding NPY and/or AgRP has no impact on food intake in mice. Here we demonstrate that induced selective ablation of AgRP-expressing neurons in adult mice results in acute reduction of feeding, demonstrating direct evidence for a critical role of these neurons in the regulation of energy homeostasis.

Newborn rabbit responsiveness to the mammary pheromone is concentration-dependent.

The effect of the intensity of odour signals has rarely been investigated in the regulation of odour-guided behaviour in young mammals. This series of experiments used the mammary pheromone (MP) of the female rabbit to assess the influence of stimulus concentration on neonatal pup responsiveness. The MP is a single compound isolated from rabbit milk that releases in pups the typical head searching and oral seizing behaviour.
