2011

Published version of an article in the journal Social Psychology of Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11218-011-9153-3 In this ethnographic study conducted in two classrooms in Norway, grade nine (14-year-olds) in lower secondary school and the first year (16-year-olds) of upper secondary school, attention is drawn to how classroom culture is constituted through relationships between students. Through processes of power, dominance, hegemony and marginalisation, classroom culture forms the conditions for a learning environment, and has different opportunities, dilemmas and costs for the students. As classroom culture is negotiated in contextual and r…

Voice and authorial body in Juana Manso

2021

The Relationship between Femininity and Sustainability Reporting

2017

Most research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and stakeholder engagement with sustainable development has focused on the internal factors of corporations, leaving aside the characteristics of the institutional, cultural, and economic context of the country where corporations operate. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of femininity in the disclosure of sustainability information based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines at a developed country context. We use three measures of the CSR information disclosure by country: the GRI reports per million of inhabitants, the GRI reports application level, and the percentage of GRI reports wit…

A study of the consideration of Isabel de Villena's prose as "affectionate" by the literary critics throughout the ages. It is maintanied that her prose is no more affectionate than the rest of vitae Christi's.

Symbols and Meanings in Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns

2013

This article examines symbols and meanings in breast cancer awareness campaigns, and the ways in which multifarious actors draw attention to the disease. We discuss what the various campaigns and initiatives can indicate, above and beyond creating breast cancer awareness. Our data stem from sources such as printed material, the Internet, and events. From these sources we have singled out and explored objects, text, and visual expressions, looking in particular for metaphors and symbolic aspects. In this article we present six “images” indicating the underlying patterns that we found. We have called the images Re-enchantment of femininity, Infantilization, Corporate profit-making, Objectific…

From a Disney princess to a modern-day queen : agency and womanhood in Disney lyrics

2015

Walt Disney Company on kulttuurisen ja taloudellisen menestyksensä myötä vaikuttanut suuresti naisidentiteettien muodostumiseen. Disney tarjoaa viihdettä koko perheelle, mutta viime aikoina Disney on keskittynyt erityisesti luomaan ohjelmia ja tuotesarjoja nuorille tytöille. Yksi näistä myyntimenestyksistä on Disney Princess –tuotesarja, jonka kahdeksan Disney -prinsessaa toimivat lukuisten tuotteiden kasvoina. Tyypillinen Disney -prinsessa on kaunis, hyväsydäminen ja viaton sekä usein vahvojen naishahmojen vihan uhri. Erityisesti kolme ensimmäistä prinsessaa (Lumikki, Tuhkimo ja Prinsessa Ruusunen) edustavat hyvin patriarkaalista naiskuvaa, jonka mukaan nainen odottaa passiivisesti hääpäiv…

Explosive Self-Confident Femininity: Experienced and Remembered Girl Energy

2017

This chapter focuses on how the target group of the 1990s girl power phenomenon made meaning of girl power in the Finnish context. The chapter takes a retrospective look at the phenomenon through the lens of girl energy, a concept used for girl power in Finland. Through memory work, Aino Tormulainen, Heta Mulari and Myry Voipio analyze a sample of adult women’s experiences of being adolescents during the most intensive years of Finnish girl energy. The chapter focuses on three key themes through which the informants remembered the phenomenon: femininity, gender equality, and friendship.
