β-Catenin Activation Regulates Tissue Growth Non–Cell Autonomously in the Hair Stem Cell Niche
2014
Coordinated Hair Growth Wnt/β-catenin signaling is a key pathway that plays a conserved role in regulating stem cell function during adult tissue regeneration. Using time-lapse imaging of live mice, Deschene et al. (p. 1353 ) show that genetic activation of β-catenin within hair follicle stem cells generates axes of hair growth by coordinated cell divisions and cell movements, even when the normal niches—the dermal papillae—are laser-ablated. Activated β-catenin enhances Wnt ligand secretion, and these ligands can then activate Wnt signaling in adjacent cells that do not have activated β-catenin, indicating how activated stem cells could influence neighboring cells during normal growth and …
Bio-inspired security analysis for IoT scenarios
2020
Computer security has recently become more and more important as the world economy dependency from data has kept growing. The complexity of the systems that need to be kept secure calls for new models capable of abstracting the interdependencies among heterogeneous components that cooperate at providing the desired service. A promising approach is attack graph analysis, however, the manual analysis of attack graphs is tedious and error prone. In this paper we propose to apply the metabolic network model to attack graph analysis, using three interacting bio-inspired algorithms: topological analysis, flux balance analysis, and extreme pathway analysis. A developed framework for graph building…

Invertebrate lectins: new aspects in retrospects
1991
Invertebrate lectins may be regarded as a special group of lectins, as there are several reasons for this: (a) their role in different defense mechanisms and in nutrition, (b) their specificity, for instance their anti-neuraminyl reactivity (and no mannose-specific lectins) and (c) their distribution in the haemolymph and in organ cells or defense-commited haemocytes.
Differential efferent projections of the anterior, posteroventral, and posterodorsal subdivisions of the medial amygdala in mice
2012
The medial amygdaloid nucleus (Me) is a key structure in the control of sociosexual behaviour in mice. It receives direct projections from the main and accessory olfactory bulbs, as well as an important hormonal input. To better understand its behavioural role, in this work we investigate the structures receiving information from the Me, by analysing the efferent projections from its anterior (MeA), posterodorsal (MePD) and posteroventral (MePV) subdivisions, using anterograde neuronal tracing with biotinylated and tetrametylrhodamine-conjugated dextranamines. The Me is strongly interconnected with the rest of the chemosensory amygdala, but shows only moderate projections to the central nucl…
Chemoecological study of the invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla from the Sicilian coast
2022
Marine invasive species and their bioactive metabolites have become critical ecological issues in the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, the highly invasive green algae Caulerpa taxifolia and Caulerpa cylindracea are known to contain the bioactive sesquiterpene caulerpenyne (1) and the bisindolic alkaloid caulerpin (2), potentially acting as chemical stressors for native species. The recent spread of a variety of C. taxifolia, Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla, also raises urgent questions about its chemical composition. Indeed, the only chemical data available for this alga are limited to the seasonal variations of caulerpenyne (1) in samples collected in the Eastern Mediterranean. In …
Hysteroscopic Evaluation of Endometrial Changes in Breast Cancer Women with or without Hormone Therapies: Results from a Large Multicenter Cohort Stu…
2020
ABSTRACT Study Objective The primary aim of our study was to investigate the incidence of endometrial pathologies, especially endometrial cancer, in women with breast cancer treated with tamoxifen (TAM), aromatase inhibitors (AIs), or receiving no treatment (NT). The secondary aim was to identify, in this cohort, ultrasonographic findings that represent robust indications for hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy, to avoid unnecessary second-level diagnostic procedures. Design Multicenter retrospective cohort study (Clinical Trial ID: NCT03898947). Setting Data were collected from different Italian centers: Regina Elena National Cancer Institute of Rome, Arbor Vitae Centre of Rome, Gaetano Ma…
Bisfenola A noteikšana materiālos un piederumos, kas paredzēti saskarei ar pārtiku
2019
Lankovska A., zinātniskais vadītājs M.Sc., LU doktorants Jansons M. Bakalaura darbs, 44 lappuses, 19 attēli, 12 tabulas, 34 literatūras avoti, 1 pielikums. Latviešu valodā. Darbā apkopota literatūra par bisfenola A migrāciju no plastmasas traukiem uz pārtikas simulantiem, paraugu sagatavošanas un bisfenola A noteikšanas metodēm ar augsti efektīvo šķidruma hromatogrāfiju un masas spektrometriju. Veikta paraugu sagatavošanas metodes optimizācija un bisfenola A migrācijas novērošana no dažādu ražotāju polikarbonāta traukiem. Novērtēta bisfenola A koncentrācija traukā iepildītajā pārtikas simulantā pēc migrācijas un izdarīti secinājumi par novērotajiem migrācijas rezultātiem salīdzinājumā ar li…
The effects of alpha-cypermethrin exposure on biochemical and redox parameters in pregnant rats and their newborns
2016
IF 2.388; International audience; Pyrethroid insecticides are extensively used in agriculture and in household activities. During pregnancy, they might affect maternal metabolic status and there after fetal development. In this work, we studied metabolic and redox effects of low dose alpha-cypermethrin exposure in pregnant rats and their offspring. The diet containing alpha cypermethrin at 0.02 mg/kg/day was consumed during the entire gestation. Plasma biochemical parameters as well as liver lipid and oxidative stress markers were determined. Our results showed that alpha-cypermethrin induced an increase in body weight and in plasma glucose and lipid levels, as well as in plasma aspartate a…
Sublethal Effects of an Organophosphate Insecticide on the European Eel,Anguilla anguilla
1997
The present communication deals with the effects of fenitrothion (0.02 mg/liter) on the energy metabolism of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, and its recovery from intoxication. Various parameters such as glycogen, lactate, proteins, and glucose levels were measured in different eel tissues after 2, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, 56, 72, and 96 hr of fenitrothion exposure. Subsequently, the fish were allowed recovery periods of 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 144, and 192 hr in clean water, and the same parameters were evaluated. Liver glycogen content showed no significant changes during the exposure time, while blood glucose levels increased markedly. Gill, liver, and blood lactate values increased during…
