Interplay between Chemical Composition and Cation Ordering in the Magnetism of Ni/Fe Layered Double Hydroxides
2013
We report the synthesis of a family of ferrimagnetic NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a variable Ni(2+)/Fe(3+) in-plane composition of [Ni(1-x)Fe(x)(OH)2](CO3)(x/2)·yH2O (x = 0.20, 0.25, and 0.33) by following a modified homogeneous precipitation. These layered magnets display high crystallinity, homogeneous hexagonal morphologies, and micrometric size that enable their quantitative exfoliation into single layers by sonomechanical treatment of the solids in polar solvents. This was confirmed by dynamic light scattering, UV-vis spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron miscroscopy, and atomic force microscopy methodologies to study the resulting steady suspensions. Our ma…
Highly Reduced Saturation Magnetization in Epitaxially Grown Ferrimagnetic Heusler Thin Films
2019
The key of spintronic devices using the spin-transfer torque phenomenon is the effective reduction of switching current density by lowering the damping constant and the saturation magnetization while retaining strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. To reduce the saturation magnetization, particular conditions such as specific substitutions or buffer layers are required. Herein, we demonstrate highly reduced saturation magnetization in tetragonal D022 Mn3–xGa thin films prepared by rf magnetron sputtering, where the epitaxial growth is examined on various substrates without any buffer layer. As the lattice mismatch between the sample and the substrate decreases from LaAlO3 and (LaAlO3)0.3…
Design of molecular materials combining magnetic, electrical and optical properties †
2000
The possibilities offered by hybrid functional materials formed by two molecular networks in the context of crystal engineering are illustrated with two different examples: (i) hybrid magnets constructed from combination of an extended ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic inorganic network, with a molecular paramagnetic metal complex acting as template. (ii) Hybrid organic–inorganic compounds combining an organic π-electron donor network that furnishes the pathway for electronic conductivity, with inorganic metal complexes that act as structural and/or magnetic components. These examples illustrate how this hybrid approach allows the design of molecular materials combining non-conventional magnet…
Crystal structure and mössbauer spectroscopy studies of the ferrimagnetic complex bimetallic salt hexaamminechromium (III) hexachloroferrate (III), […
1992
The crystal and molecular structures of the ferrimagnetic bimetallic complex salt hexaamminechromium(III) hexachloroferrate(III), [Cr(NH3)6][FeCl6], have been determined from single-crystal, three-dimensional x-ray diffraction counter data. The compound crystallizes as orange coloured crystals in the space groupC2/c of the monoclinic system with Z=4 and has cell dimensionsa=11.325(1) A,b=11.387(1) A,c=11.233(1) A, and β=90.83(1)A. The structure was refined by using segmented block diagonal least-squares techniques to discrepancy indices R and Rw of 0.0233 and 0.0285, respectively. The metal ions occupy sites with symmetry $$\bar 1$$ and are nearly octahedrally coordinated. In the [FeCl6]3− …
Single-crystal EPR study of the bimetallic ferrimagnetic chain MnCu(EDTA)·6H2O
1993
Abstract A single-crystal EPR study of the bimetallic chain compound MnCu(EDTA)·6H2O is reported. The angular dependence of the linewidth is discussed in relation to the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, manganese zerofield splitting (ZFS) and copper hyperfine coupling. The calculation of the second moments indicates that ZFS is comparable to the dipolar contribution. The EPR data support the one-dimensional character of the compound.
Spin transport in multilayer systems with fully epitaxial NiO thin films
2018
We report the generation and transport of thermal spin currents in fully epitaxial $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}/\mathrm{NiO}(001)/\mathrm{Pt}$ and $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}/\mathrm{NiO}(001)/\mathrm{Pt}$ trilayers. A thermal gradient, perpendicular to the plane of the sample, generates a magnonic spin current in the ferrimagnetic maghemite $(\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3})$ and magnetite $(\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4})$ thin films by means of the spin Seebeck effect. The spin current propagates across the epitaxial, antiferromagnetic insulating NiO layer…
Identifying the origin of the nonmonotonic thickness dependence of spin-orbit torque and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a ferrimagn…
2020
Electrical manipulation of magnetism via spin-orbit torques (SOTs) promises efficient spintronic devices. In systems comprising magnetic insulators and heavy metals, SOTs have started to be investigated only recently, especially in systems with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). Here, we quantitatively study the SOT efficiency and iDMI in a series of gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) / thulium iron garnet (TmIG) / platinum (Pt) heterostructures with varying TmIG and Pt thicknesses. We find that the non-monotonic SOT efficiency as a function of the magnetic layer thickness is not consistent with the 1/thickness dependence expected from a simple interfacial SOT mechanism. Mor…
Magnetic Coupling in Y3Fe5O12/Gd3Fe5O12 Heterostructures
2021
Ferrimagnetic ${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ (YIG) is the prototypical material for studying magnonic properties due to its exceptionally low damping. By substituting the yttrium with rare earth elements that have a net magnetic moment, we can introduce an additional spin degree of freedom. Here, we study the magnetic coupling in epitaxial ${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$/${\mathrm{Gd}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ (YIG/GIG) heterostructures grown by pulsed laser deposition. From bulk sensitive magnetometry and surface sensitive spin Seebeck effect and spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements, we determine the alignment of the heterostruct…
Epitaxy and magnetotransport ofSr2FeMoO6thin films
2000
By pulsed-laser deposition epitaxial thin films of ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{FeMoO}}_{6}$ have been prepared on (100) ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ substrates. Already for a deposition temperature of 320 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C epitaxial growth is achieved. Depending on deposition parameters the films show metallic or semiconducting behavior. At high (low) deposition temperature the FeMo sublattice has a rock-salt (random) structure. The metallic samples have a large negative magnetoresistance which peaks at the Curie temperature. The magnetic moment was determined to $4{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$ per formula unit (f.u.), in agreement with the expected value for an ideal ferrimagnetic ar…
Rational design of a new class of heterobimetallic molecule-based magnets: Synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of oxamato-bridged …
2008
Abstract Two new series of oxamato-bridged heterobimetallic coordination networks of general formula Li5[Li3M2(mpba)3(H2O)6] · 31H2O [M = NiII (1a) and CoII (1b)] and Li2[Mn3M2(mpba)3(H2O)6] · 22H2O [M = NiII (2a) and CoII (2b)] have been prepared from the metal-mediated self-assembly of the hexakis(bidentate), triple-stranded dinickel(II) and dicobalt(II) complexes [M2(mpba)3]8− [mpba = meta-phenylenebis(oxamato)] with either monovalent lithium(I) or divalent manganese(II) ions respectively, in water. X-ray structural analyses of 1a and 1b show an anionic three-dimensional network formed by an infinite parallel array of oxamato-bridged Li 3 I M 2 II (M = Ni and Co) hexagonal layers, which …
