Ordering and mobility of ferroelectric liquid crystal dimer as studied by FT-IR spectroscopy with 2D-IR correlation analysis

1997

Both a conservative rapid-scan FT-IR technique and a novel step-scan FT-IR technique with 2D correlation analysis were used to study the orientation and the mobility ofa ferroelectric liquid crystal dimer during switching under an electric field. The detailed mutual arrangements of different molecular segments (mesogen, poly(methylene) chain, polysiloxane chain) in a smectic C* phase were derived from the static spectra. It was shown that the long mesogen axis, the average poly(methylene) and the average polysiloxane chain axes do not coincide with each other. The hindered rotation of the carbonyl group is confirmed. Time-resolved FT-IR technique was used to follow the segmental motion with…

Manipulation of the ferroelectricity in LC polymers via photomechanical isomerization of azobenzene moieties

1996

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new ferroelectric liquid crystalline side chain copolymer containing photoisomerizable chromophores and non-photoisomerizable mesogenic units. On illumination with UV-light a suppression of the polar order is obtained as indicated by a substantial drop of the spontaneous polarization (Ps) compared to the dark state. We interpret this as the phase order being disrupted by the cis-isomer of the chromophore. After illumination with VIS-light only the major part of Ps is restored. The photochemical cis-trans back-isomerization (restoration of the phase) leads to a different stationary state than the dark state of the material. The thermal reisom…

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline polysiloxanes designed for high second-order nonlinear susceptibilities

1994

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline (FLC) copolysiloxanes containing suitable comonomers («NLO-chromophores») for second harmonic generation (SHG) have been prepared. Their important feature is a donor-acceptor x-system sited perpendicular to the long axis of the side-group moieties in order to adopt the polar ordering of the ferroelectric LC phase. The influcences of the mesogen structure and of the content of NLO-chromophores on the liquid crystalline and ferroelectric properties are studied. The desired chiral smectic C * phase is retained up to 30 mol-% of chromophore. Also, first measurements of second harmonic generation have been performed

Vinyl ferrocenyl glycidyl ether: an unprotected orthogonal ferrocene monomer for anionic and radical polymerization

2015

The first orthogonal ferrocene monomer, vinyl ferrocenyl glycidyl ether (VfcGE), for both anionic and radical polymerization – without the need of a protection group – is presented. Anionic ring-opening copolymerization of VfcGE and ethylene oxide (EO) generates stimuli-responsive, multifunctional poly[(vinyl ferrocenyl glycidyl ether)-co-(ethylene oxide)] (P[VfcGE-co-EO]) copolymers (molecular weights of ca. 7500 g mol−1 and low molecular weight dispersities (Đ ≤ 1.14)). The amount of the equimolar ferrocenyl and vinyl groups are controlled by the comonomer ratio up to 15.4 mol% VfcGE. The pendant vinyl groups of P[VfcGE-co-EO] were post-modified with 3-mercaptopropionic acid via thiol–ene…

Illustrating the processability of magnetic layered double hydroxides: layer-by-layer assembly of magnetic ultrathin films.

2013

We report the preparation of single-layer layered double hydroxide (LDH) two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets by exfoliation of highly crystalline NiAl-NO3 LDH. Next, these unilamellar moieties have been incorporated layer-by-layer (LbL) into a poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/LDH nanosheet multilayer ultrathin film (UTF). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles have been used to follow the uniform growth of the UTF. The use of a magnetic LDH as the cationic component of the multilayered architecture enables study of the resulting magnetic properties of the UTFs. Our magnetic data show the appearance of spontaneous …

Chimie de coordination du phosphore aux métaux du groupe 11 : progrès en catalyse de couplage C-N au Cu(I) et nouveaux complexes polyphosphines de l'…

2014

Nowadays, sustainable development encourages chemists to develop new economic and ecologic synthesis, because natural ressources are reducing. Most exploited ressources are gas and petroleum, but precious metals are also essential. This thesis is focusing on the enhancement of gold and copper complexes, obtained in our laboratory from phosphorous-based ligands. In the first part, we will develop a new system for the N-arylation of pyrazoles from a copper complexe coordinated by a new hybrid phosphinoalkene ligand. In the second part, coordination properties of gold to different ferrocenic polyphosphine will be studied. Several new innovative complexes will be isolated, and could be used in …

Novel Iron(II) Microporous Spin-Crossover Coordination Polymers with Enhanced Pore Size

2012

In this Communication, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel Hofmann-like spin-crossover porous coordination polymers of composition {Fe(L)[M(CN)4]}·G [L = 1,4-bis(4-pyridylethynyl)- benzene and MII = Ni, Pd, and Pt]. The spin-crossover properties of the framework are closely related to the number and nature of the guest molecules included in the pores.

Quantum chemical modelling of point defects in KNbO3 perovskite crystals

2000

Abstract We present results of semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations for several perovskite KNb x Ta 1−x O 3 (KTN) solid solutions, as well as point intrinsic defects – F centers and hole polarons bound to K vacancy – in KNbO 3 . Method of the intermediate neglect of the differential overlap (INDO) was combined with typically 320-atom supercells and atomic geometry optimization. Analysis of the optimized atomic and electronic structure has clearly demonstrated that several nearest Nb atoms substituting for Ta in KTaO 3 – unlike Ta impurities in KNbO 3 – reveal the self-ordering effect, which probably triggers the ferroelectricity observed in KTN. We predict co-existence of one-site (…

Forming pressure dependence of the ferroelectric domain structure in green barium titanate pellets

1995

Abstract Modifications of the X-ray diffraction line profiles by die pressing of fine grained powders of barium titanate have been studied. Two main parameters have been considered: the forming pressure and the mechanical characteristics of the binder. The higher the forming pressure, the greater the modifications of the line profiles. Furthermore, the phenomena seems to be related to pressing only; no significant effect related to the nature of the binder has been shown. The modifications of the diffraction line profiles are interpreted by considering a reduction of the size of the ferroelectric domains during pressing. In order to confirm this interpretation, the behaviour of the domain s…
