The challenge in realizing an exchange coupled BiFeO3-double perovskite bilayer
2020
Abstract In this work we propose a device design for efficient voltage control of magnetism. The magnetization of a ferrimagnetic double perovskite may be manipulated by an exchange coupled layer of multiferroic BiFeO3. Bilayers of Barium doped BiFeO3 and ferrimagnetic double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition motivated by the possibility of strong interlayer exchange coupling. While single layers of each material show high quality we observe that in both stacking orders the first layer decomposes during the deposition of the second layer. The reason for the decomposition are strongly differing growth conditions for BiFeO3 and Sr2FeMoO6. This means that the g…
Modification of magnetic anisotropy in Ni thin films by poling of (011) PMN-PT piezosubstrates
2016
ABSTRACTThis study reports the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of 20 nm thick polycrystalline Ni films deposited by magnetron sputtering on unpoled piezoelectric (011) [PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3]0.68-[PbTiO3]0.32 (PMN-PT) substrates. The magnetoresistance (MR), as well as the magnetization reversal, is found to depend on the polarization state of the piezosubstrate. Upon poling the PMN-PT substrate, which results in a transfer of strain to the Ni film, the MR value decreases by a factor of 12 at room temperature and a factor of 21 at 50 K for the current direction along the PMN-PT [100] direction, and slightly increases for the [01] current direction. Simultaneously, a strong increase in the …
Structure and dielectric properties at phase transition of Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-BaTiO3 solid solutions
2016
ABSTRACTPhase coexistence region is studied by x-ray diffraction for Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-BaTiO3 solid solutions in the tetragonal phase side from the morphotropic phase boundary. The first order ferroelectric phase transition, determined from a jump in the temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity, is located inside the coexistence region of cubic and tetragonal phases and is below the temperature, where tetragonality disappears. At low BaTiO3 concentrations phase transition into ferroelectric state at cooling is slowly approached in time and is smeared over large temperature range. Rietveld method, applied for more precise evaluation of phase content, reveals large local deformations in…
Anomalous High-Pressure Jahn-Teller Behavior inCuWO4
2012
High-pressure optical-absorption measurements performed in CuWO4 up to 20 GPa provide experimental evidence of the persistence of the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in the whole pressure range both in the low-pressure triclinic and in the highpressure monoclinic phase. The electron-lattice coupling associated with the eg(Exe) and t2g(Txe) orbitals of Cu2+ in CuWO4 are obtained from correlations between the JT distortion of the CuO6 octahedron and the associated structure of Cu2+ d-electronic levels. This distortion and its associated JT energy (EJT) decrease upon compression in both phases. However, both the distortion and associated EJT increase sharply at the phase transition pressure (PT = …
Magnetoelectric effect in mixed valency oxides mediated by charge carriers
2008
We show that the presence of free carriers in a substance can generate the multiferroic behavior. Namely, if the substance has mixed-valence ions, which can supply free carriers and have electric dipole and spin moments, all three types of long-range order (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric (ME)) can occur at low temperature. The physical origin of the effect is that charge carriers can mediate the multiferroic behavior via spin - spin (RKKY), dipole-dipole and dipole - spin interactions. Our estimate of the interaction magnitude shows that there exist an optimal carrier concentration, at which the strength of ME interaction is maximal and comparable to that of spin-spin RKKY…
Transversal spin freezing and re-entrant spin glass phases in chemically disordered Fe-containing perovskite multiferroics
2015
We propose experimental verification and theoretical explanation of magnetic anomalies in the complex Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics like PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$. The theoretical part is based on our model of coexistence of long-range magnetic order and spin glass in the above substances. In our model, the exchange interaction is anisotropic, coupling antiferromagnetically $z$ spin components of Fe$^{3+}$ ions. At the same time, the $xy$ components are coupled by much weaker exchange interaction of ferromagnetic sign. In the system with spatial disorder (half of corresponding lattice cites are occupied by spinless Nb$^{5+}$ ions) such frustrating interaction results in the…
The Peculiar Physical Properties of Nanosized Ferroics (Nanoferroics)
2013
This Chapter contains the experimental facts about size effects in nanoferroics. They include ferroelectric, ferroelastic, magnetic and multiferroic nanostructured materials. The main peculiar feature of nanoferroics is the geometric confinement originating from their surfaces and interfaces. This is in contrast to the ordinary bulk ferroics, where the sample surface plays a minor role. In particular, in nanoferroics, the surface generates the physical properties gradients in the normal (to the surface) direction. This fact yields strong size effects and spatial inhomogeneity of the nanoferroics properties, which should be taken into account to get their adequate physical description. We re…
Continuous theory of switching in geometrically confined ferroelectrics
2014
A theory of ferroelectric switching in geometrically confined samples like thin films and multilayers with domain structure has been proposed. For that we use Landau–Khalatnikov (LK) equations with free energy functional being dependent on polarization gradients. In this case, the consistent theory can be developed as for thin ferroelectric films and multilayers the domain structure reduces to Fourier series in ferroelectric polarization. The specific calculations are presented for thin film ferroelectric with dead layers and ferro-/paraelectric multilayer. Our theory is generalizable to ferroelectrics and multiferroics with other geometries.
Ambient-temperature high-pressure-induced ferroelectric phase transition in CaMnTi2O6
2017
The ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition of multiferroic ${\mathrm{CaMnTi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ has been investigated at high pressures and ambient temperature by second-harmonic generation (SHG), Raman spectroscopy, and powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. We have found that ${\mathrm{CaMnTi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ undergoes a pressure-induced structural phase transition ($P{4}_{2}mc\ensuremath{\rightarrow}P{4}_{2}/nmc$) at $\ensuremath{\sim}7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ to the same paraelectric structure found at ambient pressure and ${T}_{c}=630\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The continuous linear decrease of the SHG intensity that disappears at 7 …
High-pressure structural phase transition inMnWO4
2015
The pressure-induced phase transition of the multiferroic manganese tungstate MnWO4 is studied on single crystals using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. We observe the monoclinic P2/c to triclinic P (1) over bar phase transition at 20.1 GPa and get insight on the phase transition mechanism from the appearance of tilted triclinic domains. Selective Raman spectroscopy experiments with single crystals have shown that the onset of the phase transition occurs 5 GPa below the previously reported pressure obtained from experiments performed with powder samples.
