Recent experiments demonstrate that fiber laser cavities are able to support various multisoliton complexes, analogous to soliton molecules, which could have impact on optical information transmission or storage. These advances are guided by the concept of dissipative soliton.

Recent developments in the astrophotonic applications of optical fibre taper transitions are discussed. For example, transitions between single multi-mode and multiple single-mode cores can help suppress the atmospheric OH emission that hampers ground-based IR astronomy.
(Cycloheptadienyl)diphenylphosphine: A Versatile Hybrid Ligand

(3,5-Cycloheptadienyl)diphenylphosphine is easily synthesized from the reaction of diphenylphosphine with 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene. This new phosphine-diene has been coordinated as a monodentate P ligand with Pt, Pd, Au, Ni, and Ru; as a bidentate (P, olefin) ligand with Pt and Pd; and as a tridentate (P, diene) ligand with Rh. Fluxional properties of several complexes have been studied via NMR experiments and theoretical consideration.

A potential risk of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an incomplete mask seal causing gastric insufflation or oropharyngeal air leakage.The objective of the present study was to assess the incidence of LMA malpositions by fiberoptic laryngoscopy, and to determine their influence on gastric insufflation and oropharyngeal air leakage. One hundred eight patients were studied after the induction of anesthesia, before any surgical manipulations. After clinically satisfactory LMA placement, tidal volumes were increased stepwise until air entered the stomach, airway pressure exceeded 40 cm H2 O, or air leakage from the mask seal prevented further increases in tidal volume. [EN] In this paper, the feasibility of the joint distribution of ultra-wideband (UWB) and WIMAX wireless using polarization multiplexing as a coexistence technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated within the framework of passive optical networks (PON). Four single- and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing schemes are studied targeting to reduce the mutual interference when UWB and WiMAX are distributed jointly through standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without transmission impairments compensation techniques and amplification. Apparent interfacial shear strength of short-flax-fiber/starch acetate composites

Abstract The paper deals with an indirect industry-friendly method for identification of the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) in a fully bio-based composite. The IFSS of flax fiber/starch acetate is evaluated by a modified Bowyer and Bader method based on an analysis of the stress–strain curve of a short-fiber-reinforced composite in tension. A shear lag model is developed for the tensile stress–strain response of short-fiber-reinforced composites allowing for an elastic-perfectly plastic stress transfer. Ion-exchange fibers and drugs: a transient study.

The objective of this study was to theoretically model and experimentally measure the kinetics and extent of drug release from different ion-exchange materials using an in-house-designed flow-cell. Ion-exchange fibers (staple fibers and fiber cloth) were compared with commercially available ion-exchange materials (resins and gels). The functional ion-exchange groups in all the materials were weak -COOH or strong -SO3H groups. The rate and extent of drug release from the fibers (staple fiber>fiber cloth) was much higher than that from the resin or the gel. Radiation effects on optical frequency domain reflectometry fiber-based sensor

International audience; We investigate the radiation effects on germanosilicate optical fiber acting as the sensing element of optical frequency domain reflectometry devices. Thanks to a new setup permitting to control temperature during irradiation, we evaluate the changes induced by 10 keV x rays on their Rayleigh response up to 1 MGy in a temperature range from −40°C up to 75°C. Irradiation at fixed temperature points out that its measure is reliable during both irradiation and the recovery process. Endfunctional Polymers by Functionalization of Living Cationic Chain Ends with 1,1-Diphenylethylene

Abstract A new functionalization method has been developed for the synthesis of 2,2-diphenylvinyl(DPV)-telechelic polyisobutylene (PIB). First, living carbocationic polymerization (LCCP) of isobutylene (IB) is quantitatively end-quenched with a nonpolymerizable olefin, 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE). This process yields a mixture of diphenyl substituted vinyl and tertiary chlorine endgroups. Treatment of the resulting polymer with potassium-tert-butoxide (tBuOK) leads to the quantitative formation of DPV-telechelic PIB which is a potential macroinitiator precursor for living anionic polymerizations.
