Myogenesis in the embryonic heart of the rainbow trout, Salmo galrdneri (Rich.), was investigated electron microscopically from the 29th to the 41st somite stage. Thick and thin myofilaments are formed simultaneously as well as precursors of Z-lines, to which the thin filaments are attached. The genesis of filaments takes place in the region around the intracellular yolk droplets. The first myofibrils appear by the 33rd somite stage, probably formed by a mechanism of self-assembly in which the binding sites of actin and myosin participate. Alpha-B-Crystallin (CRYAB), a Small Heat Shock Protein sensitive to oxidative stress, is implicated in various biological processes in many tissues. In cardiac muscle, CRYAB exerts a cardio protective role in ischemia-induced damage preventing apoptosis and necrosis. We aimed to study αB-crystallin’ response in mouse cardiac tissue (H), at different time of recovery from an acute aerobic exercise (1 hour), correlating its modulation with oxidative stress level. Protein aggregation in muscle fibers may be a nonspecific phenomenon such as occurring in cores or ragged red fibers. However, it may also be a disease-specific and disease-significant phenomenon constituting protein aggregate myopathies (PAMs). These may be divided into two classes: The first one is marked by impaired extralysosomal degradation of proteins, catabolic PAM, encompassing desmin-related myopathies. Mutant proteins, that is, desmin, myotilin, or α-B crystallin, defy protein degradation, aggregate and associate with other proteins within muscle fibers, hence marking desminopathies, myotilinopathies, and α-B crystallinopathies. The fine structure of de-and reinnervated muscle spindles

Reinnervated muscle spindles in lower lumbrical muscles of rats studied 17 days to 24 months after crushing the sciatic nerve showed a series of alterations which have not been analysed, thus far, by electron microscopy. There was a striking increase of the number of intrafusal muscle fibers seen in approximately 20% of reinnervated spindles. These spindles showed 5–11 intrafusal muscle fibers whereas normal spindles usually contained 3–4 fibers only.

The human brain subventricular zone: stem cells in this niche and its organization.

The authors have collected postmortem and intraoperative tissue from adult human patients and found that it contains a unique ribbon of astrocytes that proliferate in vivo and can function as neural stem cells in vitro. Differentiation of Y79 cells induced by prolonged exposure to insulin

Y79 human retinoblastoma cells are known to contain receptors for both insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), to produce these cytokines and release them in the culture medium. Previously we have demonstrated that IGFs and insulin stimulate Y79 cell proliferation through the involvement of type I IGF receptor and Insulin Receptor Substrate 1 (IRS-1). This paper studies the effect of prolonged exposure to insulin on Y79 cells. Cells grown for 10 days in the presence of insulin were reseeded and incubated once more with insulin. In this study, sparse modeling is introduced for the estimation of propagation patterns in intracardiac atrial fibrillation (AF) signals. The estimation is based on the partial directed coherence function, derived from fitting a multivariate autoregressive model to the observed signal using least-squares (LS) estimation.
