Signal-to-Noise Ratio in Bandpass Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Modulation Systems

1982

The effects of a linear transmission channel on the performance of a correlator receiver for a direct-sequence spreadspectrum system are analyzed and a complete treatment of the influence of a periodic spreading code is carried out. The output data signal is obtained as a function of the channel characteristic and the code sequence employed; this allows maximizing the output signal level and evaluation of the influence of the synchronization error of the local code. The asymptotic value of the correlation loss has also been derived together with the intersymbol inteference power. The general expression of a figure of merit of the effectiveness of the system is also obtained in simple terms …

Adaptive quadratic regularization for baseline wandering removal in wearable ECG devices

2016

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most important physiological signals to monitor the health status of a patient. Technological advances allow the size and weight of ECG acquisition devices to be strongly reduced so that wearable systems are now available, even though the computational power and memory capacity is generally limited. An ECG signal is affected by several artifacts, among which the baseline wandering (BW), i.e., a slowly varying variation of its trend, represents a major disturbance. Several algorithms for BW removal have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we propose new methods to face the problem that require low computational and memory resources and th…

Identification and Characterization of Stress-Responsive TAS3-Derived TasiRNAs in Melon

2019

Small interfering RNAs (siRNA) are key regulators of gene expression that play essential roles in diverse biological processes. Trans-acting siRNAs (tasiRNAs) are a class of plant-endogenous siRNAs that lead the cleavage of non-identical transcripts. TasiRNAs are usually involved in fine-tuning development. However, increasing evidence supports that tasiRNAs may be involved in stress response. Melon is a crop of great economic importance extensively cultivated in semiarid regions frequently exposed to changing environmental conditions that limit its productivity. However, knowledge of the precise role of siRNAs in general, and of tasiRNAs in particular, in regulating the response to adverse…

Psychometric properties of the Situational Inventory of Body-Image Dysphoria-Short form in a Spanish sample

2006

The primary objective of this study was to translate and validate Situational Inventory of Body-Image Dysphoria-Short form (SIBID-S) in a Spanish population. The scale consists of 20 items to assess the frequency of dysphoric body-image emotions in certain situational contexts, using a five-point rating scale. The questionnaire was administered to 214 women between the ages of 14 and 29 years, from primary and secondary schools and a university. Principal components analysis indicated a one-factor structure for the entire sample and both younger (18) and older (or=18) participants. Internal consistency was high (0.94), and the test-retest reliability over 1 month ranged between 0.89 and 0.9…

About some psychological variables correlated with dogmatism

1983

The relationships between dogmatism and some perceptual-cognitive, personality, and attitudinal indices were investigated for 40 men and 40 women. Dogmatism scores correlated negatively with the scores in Witkin's Group Embedded Figures Test and on the Flexibility scale from Gough's California Psychological Inventory. Correlations were positive for a favorable attitude towards concepts like Discipline, Obedience, Social order, measured by the semantic differential. Some incongruities between obtained data and Rokeach's (1960) findings are pointed out.

Expanding the Family Frame: Social Specialists, Mediated Experiences, and Gendered Images of Mobility in Transnational Wedding Videos

2021

This contribution explores the role of wedding videos in shaping transnational social relationships. Examining the production and aesthetic means of these ‘mobile images of mobility’, I show how videographers serve as ritual and social specialists to bring to the fore a fictionalized, imagined place of transnational social relationships. As evidence of ‘memory objects’ for life events, these videos form the basis for mediated experiences in transnational settings, relating those depicted to those engaging in and those watching the videos. They all become part of the social relationships that are inscribed in the video. Yet this imaginary filmic space creates gendered, contested spaces of mo…

The CSI-education effect: Do potential criminals benefit from forensic TV series?

2018

Abstract Forensic series have become popular over the last two decades. They have raised the importance of forensic evidence in the eyes of the public (CSI effect). However, it has not been investigated to what extent criminals may learn about forensic evidence through these shows. We used multiple approaches to tackle this potential CSI-education effect. First, we analyzed crime statistics for crime and detection rate. Second, we asked convicted criminals about their impressions about the usefulness of crime shows for covering up a crime. Third, we asked fans of crime series and a control group of non-watchers to slip into the role of a criminal by enacting the cleaning up a murder crime s…

Implementation of JPEG2000 arithmetic decoder using dynamic reconfiguration of FPGA

2005

This paper describes implementation of a part of JPEG2000 algorithm (MQ-Decoder and arithmetic decoder) on a FPGA board using dynamic reconfiguration. Comparison between static and dynamic reconfiguration is presented and new analysis criteria (time performance, logic cost, spatio-temporal efficiency) are defined. MQ-decoder and arithmetic decoder can be classified in the most attractive case for dynamic reconfiguration implementation: applications without parallelism by functions. This implementation is done on an architecture designed to study dynamic reconfiguration of FPGAs: the ARDOISE architecture. The implementation obtained, based on four partial configurations of arithmetic decoder…

A Software Defined Radio Platform Implementing a WiFi and ZigBee Receiver

2006

A successful attempt to design and implement a multi-standard compliant Basebnd Processor is here presented. By exploiting the potential of FPGA's reconfigurability, the received signal from RF stage have been processed in order to properly decode frames of IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) and IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee) protocols. both falling within the ISM band (centered at 2.45GHz). The experimental implementation carried out is a practical demonstration of the Software Defined Radio concept.
