Ab initio study of the SrTiO3, BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 (001) surfaces

The results of first-principles calculations of the two possible terminations of (0 0 1) surfaces of SrTiO 3 (STO), BaTiO3 (BTO) and PbTiO3 (PTO) perovskites are presented. Surface atomic structures and their electronic configurations have been calculated using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) combined with hybrid (B3PW) exchange-correlation technique. Our results are compared with previous quantum mechanical calculations and available experimental data. Surface relaxations and the electronic states near valence band gap are discussed in details for all three perovskites. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

A review of the development of portable laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and its applications

Abstract In this review, we present person-transportable laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) devices that have previously been developed and reported in the literature as well as their applications. They are compared with X-ray fluorescent (XRF) devices, which represent their strongest competition. Although LIBS devices have advantages over XRF devices, such as sensitivity to the light elements, high spatial resolution and the possibility to distinguish between different layers of the sample, there are also disadvantages and both are discussed here. The relaxation dynamics of many disordered systems, such as structural glasses, proteins, granular materials or spin glasses, is not completely frozen even at very low temperatures. This residual motion leads to a change of the properties of the material, a process commonly called aging. Despite recent advances in the theoretical description of such aging processes, the microscopic mechanisms leading to the aging dynamics are still a matter of dispute. Hybrid density functional theoretical study of NASICON-type NaxTi2(PO4)3 (x = 1–4)

Sodium Super Ionic Conductor (NASICON) structured phosphate framework compounds represent a very attractive class of materials for their use as Na-ion battery electrodes. High-Speed Memory from Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors with High-κ Gate Dielectric

We demonstrate 100 ns write/erase speed of single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (SWCNT-FET) memory elements. With this high operation speed, SWCNT-FET memory elements can compete with state of the art commercial Flash memories in this figure of merit. The endurance of the memory elements is shown to exceed 104 cycles. The SWCNT-FETs have atomic layer deposited hafnium oxide as a gate dielectric, and the devices are passivated by another hafnium oxide layer in order to reduce surface chemistry effects. DC and 1/f noise characterization of cryogenically cooled pseudomorphic HEMT's

Pseudomorphic (AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs) HEMT's have exhibited the best noise performance over the entire LF-to-microwave frequency range if compared to MESFET's and conventional GaAs HEMT's, due to either a reduced flicker noise, a lower G/R contribution and a smaller high-field diffusion noise. We have recently investigated the microwave (up to 18 GHz) noise properties of packaged pseudomorphic HEMT's from 290 K down to cryogenic temperature values. The current experimental work is aimed at extending such analysis to the LF noise range and at low temperatures. Dynamic programming and Munkres algorithm for optimal photovoltaic arrays reconfiguration

Abstract In this paper, an original formulation of the control problem for optimal PV array reconfiguration, following a Total Cross Tied layout, is proposed. The formulation follows the well-known subset sum problem, which is a special case of the knapsack problem. The reconfiguration is a measure devoted to mitigate the mismatch effect and maximize the output power of small photovoltaic plants under non-homogeneous working conditions.
