pilF polymorphism-based PCR to distinguish Vibrio vulnificus strains potentially dangerous to public health

ABSTRACT Vibrio vulnificus is a heterogeneous species that comprises strains virulent and avirulent for humans and fish, and it is grouped into three biotypes. In this report, we describe a PCR-based methodology that allows both the species identification and discrimination of those isolates that could be considered dangerous to public health. Discrimination is based on the amplification of a variable region located within the gene pilF , which seems to be associated with potential human pathogenicity, regardless of the biotype of the strain.

Expression of P, S, and F1C adhesins by cytotoxic necrotizing factor1-producing Escherichia coli from septicemic and diarrheic pigs

Nineteen papC-positive cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1 (CNF1)-producing Escherichia coli isolates from pigs with septicemia or diarrhea were tested for the presence of pap-, sfa-, and afa-related sequences encoding P/Prs, S/F1C, and Dr/AFA adhesins respectively. Production of adhesins by isolates was tested by mannose-resistant hemagglutination (MRHA), sialidase treatment of erythrocytes and particle agglutination tests. Production of P, S, and F1C fimbriae by isolates was also examined by immunofluorescence. All isolates were pap+ by PCR. Extremal problems of approximation theory in fuzzy context

Abstract The problem of approximation of a fuzzy subset of a normed space is considered. We study the error of approximation, which in this case is characterized by an L -fuzzy number. In order to do this we define the supremum of an L -fuzzy set of real numbers as well as the supremum and the infimum of a crisp set of L -fuzzy numbers. The introduced concepts allow us to investigate the best approximation and the optimal linear approximation. In particular, we consider approximation of a fuzzy subset in the space L p m of differentiable functions in the L q -metric. Proper 1-ball contractive retractions in Banach spaces of measurable functions

In this paper we consider the Wosko problem of evaluating, in an infinite-dimensional Banach space X, the infimum of all k > 1 for which there exists a k-ball contractive retraction of the unit ball onto its boundary. We prove that in some classical Banach spaces the best possible value 1 is attained. Moreover we give estimates of the lower H-measure of noncompactness of the retractions we construct. 1. Fra le celebrazioni dedicate annualmente alla santa protettrice di Palermo, Santa Rosalia, in età barocca, il “festino” del 1693, celebrato pochi mesi dopo il sisma che aveva devastato la Sicilia sud-orientale, spicca per il marcato carattere di eccezionalità che gli si volle attribuire, con l'evidente volontà di esorcizzare l'immane catastrofe che aveva colpito l'isola. Tutti gli apparati furono pensati in relazione al tema dei terremoti. Cyclic Complexity of Words

We introduce and study a complexity function on words $c_x(n),$ called \emph{cyclic complexity}, which counts the number of conjugacy classes of factors of length $n$ of an infinite word $x.$ We extend the well-known Morse-Hedlund theorem to the setting of cyclic complexity by showing that a word is ultimately periodic if and only if it has bounded cyclic complexity. Unlike most complexity functions, cyclic complexity distinguishes between Sturmian words of different slopes. We prove that if $x$ is a Sturmian word and $y$ is a word having the same cyclic complexity of $x,$ then up to renaming letters, $x$ and $y$ have the same set of factors. Activation of the contact-phase system on bacterial surfaces--a clue to serious complications in infectious diseases.

Fever, hypotension and bleeding disorders are common symptoms of sepsis and septic shock. The activation of the contact-phase system is thought to contribute to the development of these severe disease states by triggering proinflammatory and procoagulatory cascades; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are obscure. Here we report that the components of the contact-phase system are assembled on the surface of Escherichia coli and Salmonella through their specific interactions with fibrous bacterial surface proteins, curli and fimbriae.
