Geometric description of flanking structures
2005
Present nomenclature of faults and flanking structures is ambiguous. This paper presents a system for description of flanking structures, based on geometric parameters and independent of kinematic frame. The description can be made using two levels of accuracy. A qualitative method is described using four geometric features: tilt, slip, lift and roll. This method is suggested for practical use in the field, since it does not involve measurements or complicated procedures. In parallel, a quantitative approach is also presented, based on analytical modelling of Bezier curves. This method requires measurement of geometric features and involves mathematical treatment, but allows comparison betw…
Role and importance of polymorphisms with respect to DNA methylation for the expression of CYP2E1 enzyme
2014
Different individuals possess slightly different genetic information and show genetically-determined differences in several enzyme activities due to genetic variability. Following an integrated approach, we studied the polymorphisms and methylation of sites contained in the 5' flanking region of the metabolizing enzyme CYP2E1 in correlation to its expression in both tumor and non-neoplastic liver cell lines, since to date little is known about the influence of these (epi)genetic elements in basal conditions and under induction by the specific inductor and a demethylating agent. In treated cells, reduced DNA methylation, assessed both at genomic and gene level, was not consistently associate…
Technique and results of the retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy via a lumbar approach
1998
Introduction: Since 1992, endoscopic techniques have been used increasingly in adrenal-gland surgery. In the present paper, the technique of the retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy via a lumbar approach is described. Methods: The patient is placed in a lateral decubitus position. In the first step, a dilatation trocar is introduced in the retroperitoneal space to create an artificial cavity. The dilatation trocar is replaced by a blocking trocar to close off the operating field. After insufflation of CO2, two additional trocars are introduced in the area of the conventional flank incision. Adrenalectomy is performed via these ports. Once the adrenal gland is completely mobilized, it is inser…
Electron microprobe technique for the determination of iron oxidation state in silicate glasses
2018
We present a new calibration for the determination of the iron oxidation state in silicate glasses by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) with the "flank method." This method is based on the changes in both intensity and wavelength of the FeLα and FeLβ X-ray emission lines with iron oxidation state. The flank method utilizes the maximum difference for the FeLα and FeLβ spectra observed at the peak flanks between different standard materials, which quantitatively correlates with the Fe2+ content. Provided that this correlation is calibrated on reference materials, the Fe2+/ΣFe ratio can be determined for samples with known total Fe content. Two synthetic Fe-rich ferric and ferrous garnet end…
Militarization of Security Policies in Central and Eastern Europe
2023
Pawłuszko explains the process of militarization of security policies in the CEE region since the Crimea Crisis. According to the Copenhagen School, he focuses on reconstruction of the Central-Eastern European Security Complex and draws attention to the changes in military policies of states in the region. Pawłuszko explores theoretical implications, as well as practical consequences of the NATO-Russia rivalry on the “eastern flank” of Europe. The chapter concludes with a study of perspectives on geopolitical agenda of the CEE region.
Asymmetric boudins as shear sense indicators—an assessment from field data
2003
Asymmetric boudins are potential but problematic shear sense indicators. They can be divided into two groups, with slip on the inter-boudin surface that is either synthetic (S-slip) or antithetic (A-slip) with respect to bulk shear sense. Since both groups have mirror-image symmetry, independent geometric criteria are needed to distinguish them if they are to be used as shear sense indicators. Investigation of asymmetric boudins in trains parallel to the main foliation from the Kaoko Belt in Namibia and elsewhere indicate that the geometry of both groups is in most cases different. Shearband boudins (formed by S-slip) have a long, curved lenticular shape and large relative displacement and …
Lack of antiandrogenic effects of topical bifonazole on sebaceous glands and hairs in the hamster flank organ.
1993
The activity of topically applied bifonazole was evaluated in vivo in the three androgen-dependent structures of the hamster flank organ, i.e. the pigmented spot, sebaceous glands and hairs. Topical bifonazole in our experience did not demonstrate any morphological effect on sebaceous gland and hair even when applied in the dosage of 3 mg/cm2/day. On the basis of our morphometric results we can conclude that topically applied bifonazole does not interfere with cutaneous androgen metabolic transformations in the pilosebaceous unit of the flank organ.
Transcription of human neuronal nitric oxide synthase mRNAs derived from different first exons is partly controlled by exon 1-specific promoter seque…
2006
AbstractThe human neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS1) gene is subject to extensive splicing. A total of 12 NOS1 mRNA species have been identified. They differ in their 5′ ends and are derived from 12 different first exons (termed exons 1a to 1l). Various cell lines whose NOS1 first exon expression patterns were representative of human brain, skin, and skeletal muscle were identified. These included A673 neuroepithelioma cells, SK-N-MC neuroblastoma cells, HaCaT keratinocyte-like cells, and C2C12 myocyte-like cells. In these cell lines, correlations were found between the exon 1 variants preferentially expressed and the promoter activities of their cognate 5′ flanking sequences. These data…
Chromatin structure of the 5′ flanking region of the yeastLEU2 gene
1989
The chromatin structure of theLEU2 gene and its flanks has been studied by means of nuclease digestion, both with micrococcal nuclease and DNase I. The gene is organized in an array of positioned nucleosomes. Within the promoter region, the nucleosome positioning places the regulatory sequences, putative TATA box and upstream activator sequence outside the nucleosomal cores. The tRNA3 Leu gene possesses a characteristic structure and is protected against nucleases. Most of the 5′ flank is sensitive to DNase I digestion, although no clear hypersensitive sites were found. The chromatin structure is independent of either the transcriptional state of the gene or the chromosomal or episomal loca…
Radon measurements in the SE and NE flank of Mt. Etna (Italy)
2007
Abstract Soil Radon has been monitored at two fixed sites located in the northeastern and southeastern flank of Mt. Etna. In this study we report the comparison between in-soil Radon concentration trend recorded in the SE flank and that one recorded in the NE one, where an in-soil Radon detection system is operating since 2001. The aim of this work was to implement the investigation area finding a suitable radon detection site, in the south-east flank of Mt. Etna, in order to better understand possible links between Radon anomalies and volcano dynamic. Radon data collected in NE and SE sites were compared with the volcanic tremor, frequency of occurrence of earthquakes and seismic strain-re…
