Quill mites (Acari: Syringophilidae) from Aegithalos caudatus (Passeriformes: Aegithalidae)

2004

Three species of syringophilid mites (Acari: Syringophilidae) were collected from quills of Aegithalos caudatus (Passeriformes: Aegithalidae) in Poland, Picobia caudati sp. n. from body feathers, Dissonus scirpaceus Skoracki, 1999 from rectrices, and Syringophilopsis aegithali Bochkov et al., 2001 from secondaries.

BVLOS UAS Operations in Highly-Turbulent Volcanic Plumes.

2020

Long-range, high-altitude Unoccupied Aerial System (UAS) operations now enable in-situ measurements of volcanic gas chemistry at globally-significant active volcanoes. However, the extreme environments encountered within volcanic plumes present significant challenges for both air frame development and in-flight control. As part of a multi-disciplinary field deployment in May 2019, we flew fixed wing UAS Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) over Manam volcano, Papua New Guinea, to measure real-time gas concentrations within the volcanic plume. By integrating aerial gas measurements with ground- and satellite-based sensors, our aim was to collect data that would constrain the emission rate of …

Frequency-dependent flight activity in the colour polymorphic wood tiger moth

2015

Predators efficiently learn to avoid one type of warning signal rather than several, making colour polymorphisms unexpected. Aposematic wood tiger moth males Parasemia plantaginis have either white or yellow hindwing coloration across Europe. Previous studies indicate that yellow males are better defended from predators, while white males have a positively frequency-dependent mating advantage. However, the potential frequency-dependent behavioural differences in flight between the morphs, as well as the role of male-male interactions in inducing flying activity, have not been previously considered. We ran an outdoor cage experiment where proportions of both male morphs were manipulated to t…

Tyramine Actions on Drosophila Flight Behavior Are Affected by a Glial Dehydrogenase/Reductase

2017

The biogenic amines octopamine (OA) and tyramine (TA) modulate insect motor behavior in an antagonistic manner. OA generally enhances locomotor behaviors such as Drosophila larval crawling and flight, whereas TA decreases locomotor activity. However, the mechanisms and cellular targets of TA modulation of locomotor activity are incompletely understood. This study combines immunocytochemistry, genetics and flight behavioral assays in the Drosophila model system to test the role of a candidate enzyme for TA catabolism, named Nazgul (Naz), in flight motor behavioral control. We hypothesize that the dehydrogenase/reductase Naz represents a critical step in TA catabolism. Immunocytochemistry rev…

Using the Electronics Development Advantage in Creating a Buzz for the Airline Passengers

2013

More and more airlines are trying to show their customers their ability to understand their needs, the market trends and the importance of technology in their lives. In response to the rapid development of the consumer electronics, the airline companies focus their attention on offering their customers the possibility to book a flight or check-in using a smartphone, spend time watching movies or be connected to the internet during the flight. Customers search for airlines who are more ”tech-geek” and opened to new technologies, which allows them to rate the airline companies through apps or connect more often with the airline through social-media. Technology has become an important part in …

In-flight recoil separators RITU and MARA and the standard detector setups

2023

In-flight recoil separators RITU and MARA at Jyväskylä Accelerator Laboratory are complementary devices to separate the fusion-evaporation residues from the primary beam and other reaction products. The nuclear-structure-research program at Jyväskylä utilizes these separators and the detector setups shared between the separators to identify weak reaction channels and extract nuclear-structure information via decay experiments and in-beam spectroscopic studies. For example the very weak N∼Z nuclei are studied in-beam by using 𝛽-decay tagging method (Tuike scintillator) enhanced with the mass selection (MARA) and charge particle-evaporation veto (JYTube). peerReviewed

Replacing short-haul flights with land-based transportation modes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions: the case of Finland

2019

Even though air travel often provides the fastest transport option, it also has the highest climate impact. Especially on long-haul trips, an aircraft usually represents the only feasible option. Nevertheless, aircraft are more often used on short-haul routes as well. It is the short-haul flights that produce the highest emissions per passenger. These are also the ones that could be replaced the most easily by land-based transportation modes. This study investigates the greenhouse gas emissions reduction potential of replacing short-haul flights with train, coach and car travel within Finland while also taking into account real travel times from door to door. Our results showed that replaci…

Responsabilità civile per volo internazionale "cancellato" e giurisdizione italiana

2020

Time of flight for photon in human skin

2016

The time of flight for photons in human skin was measured using picosecond diode laser. Two different wavelength lasers were used - 405 nm and 510 nm. A difference for time of flight in normal skin and in nevus was observed as well as a difference for different wavelength laser irradiation was observed. For 405 nm laser irradiation the difference was 41 ps while comparison of time of flights skin and nevi using 510 nm irradiation showed a result of 32 ps. Results allow to conclude that the time photon travels in skin might depend on the characteristics of the medium and wavelength of the irradiation. This can be related to known data for light penetration depth in human skin for different w…
