Hemodilution in isolated tumor perfusion.

1984

Experiments are performed to study the influence of local hemodilution on tumor blood flow, oxygen availability in tumor tissue and O2 consumption of cancer cells. The results obtained clearly show that hemodilution in isolated tumor perfusion can distinctly improve nutritive blood flow through solid tumors. This can be utilized to enhance pharmacokinetics of antitumor drugs. Due to the improved metabolic status, the pharmacodynamics of some antitumor drugs should also be enhanced. To achieve a maximum improvement of the O2 supply to the tumor, hematocrit values should not be decreased below 0.20.

Hyper-concentrated flow and surface velocity estimation by digital imaging technique: a study case

This paper investigates the utility of digital imaging technique for performing surface velocity measurements of hyper-concentrated flows. The analysis is conducted with the aid of data collected in a scale laboratory flume constructed at the Hydraulic laboratory of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospatial and of Materials Engineering (DICAM) – University of Palermo (Italy). In particular the present paper describes the setup of a laboratory test and the applicability of a fully digital imaging approach.

Liquid metal MHD experimental activities for LLCB TBM development

Abstract In Indian Lead Lithium cooled Ceramic Breeder (LLCB) blanket concept, Lead–Lithium (Pb–Li) liquid metal is used to extract heat from its own bulk volume and also from the neighboring solid breeder zones. The moderate flow velocity of Pb–Li inside the module can be significantly modified due to MHD effects, which arise because of the presence of strong toroidal magnetic field. Computational fluid dynamics of the ascending aorta before the onset of type A aortic dissection.

We performed a pre-dissection computational fluid analysis of an ascending aortic aneurysm associated with unicuspid aortic valve. The analysis showed an abnormal helical flow pattern inside the aneurysm and an increased wall stress on the right postero-lateral wall of the ascending aorta. These values were largely higher than the theoretical cut-off for aortic wall dissection, their topographic distribution followed the intimal tear site as subsequently diagnosed by computed tomography scan and confirmed during the operation for dissection repair.

Objectives Neuroprotection is of paramount interest in cardiac surgery. Right axillary artery cannulation is well established in aortic surgery because it significantly improves survival and outcome, but malperfusion of the right brain after direct cannulation has been reported. Flow analysis with 3-dim ultra-relativistic hydro

We review how flow observables of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are influenced by the initial condition, the description of the fluid dynamical (FD) stage and freeze-out (FO). We discuss the effects of the resolution of the FD treatment, the arising smoothing and numerical viscosity, as well as the consequences of final FO. This final FO stage includes confinement and simultaneous formation of constituent quarks. From the energy and momentum conservation at the FO stage pressure change and flow velocity may occur, which further modifies the observables.

Altered cerebral blood flow velocity features in fibromyalgia patients in resting-state conditions

[EN] The aim of this study is to characterize in resting-state conditions the cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) signals of fibromyalgia patients. The anterior and middle cerebral arteries of both hemispheres from 15 women with fibromyalgia and 15 healthy women were monitored using Transcranial Doppler (TCD) during a 5-minute eyes-closed resting period. Flow resistance of overland flow on a smooth bed under simulated rainfall

In this paper a recently theoretically deduced flow resistance equation, based on a power-velocity profile, was tested using laboratory measurements by Yoon and Wenzel for an overland flow on a smooth bed under rainfall. In 50 normal subjects flow velocity and direction on the portal vein was measured by ultrasonic duplex system. The measurements revealed at a mean diameter of 9.7 mm, a mean flow velocity of 15.2 +/- 2.6 cm/s, corresponding to a volume flow of 693 +/- 235 ml/min. Postprandially this increased to 880 +/- 269 ml/min. Inter-observer and day to day measurements demonstrated good reproducibility. Thus, this simple non-invasive method is well suited for quantitative assessment of the portal vein system in portal hypertension, thrombosis or after shunt operations.

Velocity and turbulence measurements: uncertainty in the application of the Image-based technique

This work focuses on the application of image-based technique to estimate velocity and turbulent flow characteristics. In particular, in the present work digital imaging technique is used for performing surface velocity measurements of hyper-concentrated flows. The analysis is conducted with the aid of data collected in a scale laboratory flume constructed at the Hydraulic laboratory of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospatial and of Materials Engineering (DICAM) – University of Palermo (Italy). In the present paper a brief summary of results obtained in previous works on the flow velocity estimation error and uncertainty related to the acquisition procedure is reported.
