Development of Methods for the Determination of Ts, T3s and Sterols in Vegetable Oils

In this work, a CEC method using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns was developed to determine Ts and T3s present in edible oils. The potential of this method to evaluate olive oil adulteration with lower-cost oils of a different botanical origin was also investigated. For these purposes, the following vegetable oils were used: soybean, sunflower, grapeseed, EVOO (Coosur), hazelnut (Guinama), corn (Hacendado) and red palm (Blue Bay).

The genus Pistacia is a dioecious species staminate and pistillate inflorescences born on different trees and are wind pollinated. In pistachio orchards, female and male flowering periods are often not synchronized. In fact, male trees spread their pollen before the flowers of female trees become receptive. Pollination is commonly devoted to spontaneous males of P. terebinthus. In this research authors refer to the results obtained observing the phenology of the blooming period of monoicous genotypes of P. terebinthus discovered in the Rhodope Mountains (Bulgaria). Clustering Bacteria Species Using Neural Gas: Preliminary Study

In this work a method for clustering and visualization of bacteria taxonomy is presented. A modified version of the Batch Median Neural Gas (BNG) algorithm is proposed. The BNG algorithm is able to manage non vectorial data given as a dissimilarity matrix. We tested the modified BNG on the dissimilarity matrix obtained from sequences alignment and computing distances using bacteria genotype information regarding the16S rRNA housekeeping gene, which represents a stable part of bacteria genome. The dataset used for the experiments is obtained from the Ribosomal Database Project II, and it is made of 5159 sequences of 16S rRNA genes. The Annonaceae includes cultivated species of economic interest and represents an important source of information for better understanding the evolution of tropical rainforests. In phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data that are used to address evolutionary questions, it is imperative to use appropriate statistical models. Annonaceae are cases in point: Two sister clades, the subfamilies Annonoideae and Malmeoideae, contain the majority of Annonaceae species diversity. Abstract A statistical model for predicting daily mean pollen concentrations during the flowering season is constructed and its parameterization and application to birch pollen in Riga (Latvia) are discussed. The model involves several steps of transformations of both meteorological data and pollen observations, aiming at a normally distributed homogeneous stationary dataset with linearized dependencies between the transformed meteorological predictors and pollen concentrations. Abstract Risk stratification of COVID‐19 patients is essential for pandemic management. Changes in the cell fitness marker, hFwe‐Lose, can precede the host immune response to infection, potentially making such a biomarker an earlier triage tool. Here, we evaluate whether hFwe‐Lose gene expression can outperform conventional methods in predicting outcomes (e.g., death and hospitalization) in COVID‐19 patients. Abstract The generic circumscription and infrageneric phylogeny of Gentianella was analysed based on matK and ITS sequence variation. Our results suggested that Gentianella is polyphyletic and should be limited to species with only one nectary per petal lobe. Gentianella in such a circumscription is most closely related to one part of a highly polyphyletic Swertia. within uninectariate Gentianella two major groups could be recognized: 1) northern hemispheric species with vascularized fimbriae at the base of the corolla lobes, and 2) northern hemispheric, South American, and Austrlia/New Zealand species without vascularized fimbriae. Survivorship in animals depends on both foraging activities and avoidance of predation, and thus behavioural decisions often reflect a trade-off between predation risk and foraging efficiency. In this experimental study, we compared behavioural responses of free-living adult and juvenile Willow Tits Poecile montanus to a conspecific alarm call in two treatments. The alarm call was played back when a focal bird was either not feeding, or feeding on a sunflower seed on the middle part of a spruce branch. Volatile constituents of Dianthus rupicola Biv. from Sicily: activity against microorganisms affecting cellulosic objects.

Dianthus rupicola Biv. (cliffs carnation) is a camephytic, suffruticous, perennial plant growing up to 40 cm high. The plant is widespread in Sicily and neighbouring islands (Egadi, Lampedusa, Lipari) and in some areas of southern Italy. GC and GC-MS analyses of the essential oil distilled from the flowers showed the presence of 66 components. Its composition is characterised by the high content of thymol and carvacrol derivatives. A good antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus and Bacillussubtilis, both infesting cellulosic historical material, was shown, whereas the antioxidant capacity was determined to be quite poor.
A new self-compatibility haplotype in the sweet cherry 'Kronio', S5' attributable to a pollen-part mutation in the SFB gene

‘Kronio’ is a Sicilian cultivar of sweet cherry (Prunus avium), nominally with the incompatibility genotype S 5 S 6 , that is reported to be naturally self-compatible. In this work the cause of its self-compatibility was investigated. Test selfing confirmed self-compatibility and provided embryos for analysis; PCR with consensus primers designed to amplify S-RNase and SFB alleles showed that the embryos were of two types, S 5 S 5 and S 5 S 6 , indicating that S 6 pollen failed, but S 5 succeeded, perhaps because of a mutation in the pollen or stylar component.
