Magnetic field dynamos and magnetically triggered flow instabilities
2017
The project A2 of the LIMTECH Alliance aimed at a better understanding of those magnetohydrodynamic instabilities that are relevant for the generation and the action of cosmic magnetic fields. These comprise the hydromagnetic dynamo effect and various magnetically triggered flow instabilities, such as the magnetorotational instability and the Tayler instability. The project was intended to support the experimental capabilities to become available in the framework of the DREsden Sodium facility for DYNamo and thermohydraulic studies (DRESDYN). An associated starting grant was focused on the dimensioning of a liquid metal experiment on the newly found magnetic destabilization of rotating flow…
Analysis of blood flow in one dimensional elastic artery using Navier-Stokes conservation laws
2017
Optimizing colormaps with consideration for color vision deficiency to enable accurate interpretation of scientific data
2018
Color vision deficiency (CVD) affects more than 4% of the population and leads to a different visual perception of colors. Though this has been known for decades, colormaps with many colors across the visual spectra are often used to represent data, leading to the potential for misinterpretation or difficulty with interpretation by someone with this deficiency. Until the creation of the module presented here, there were no colormaps mathematically optimized for CVD using modern color appearance models. While there have been some attempts to make aesthetically pleasing or subjectively tolerable colormaps for those with CVD, our goal was to make optimized colormaps for the most accurate perce…
Resolving gas bubbles ascending in liquid metal from low-SNR neutron radiography images
2021
We demonstrate a new image processing methodology for resolving gas bubbles travelling through liquid metal from dynamic neutron radiography images with an intrinsically low signal-to-noise ratio. Image pre-processing, denoising and bubble segmentation are described in detail, with practical recommendations. Experimental validation is presented—stationary and moving reference bodies with neutron-transparent cavities are radiographed with imaging conditions representative of the cases with bubbles in liquid metal. The new methods are applied to our experimental data from previous and recent imaging campaigns, and the performance of the methods proposed in this paper is compared against our p…
Mass transfer in nonisothermal ferrocolloids under the effect of a magnetic field
1999
Abstract The paper presents a review of newest experimental results on particle thermal diffusion in hydrocarbon based ferrofluids. The measurements are performed using a vertical thermal diffusion column, the Soret coefficient is evaluated from particle separation curves employing a simple column theory which accounts for thermal convection in the vertical channel forced by a concentration buoyancy force arising during the thermophoretic transfer of heavy particles. High positive values of the Soret coefficient of lyophilized Fe 3 O 4 and Mn x Zn 1− x Fe 2 O 4 particles in surfacted tetradecane based colloids are measured. Experiments confirm the theoretically predicted anisotropy of parti…
Magnetically enhancing the Seebeck coefficient in ferrofluids.
2019
The influence of the magnetic field on the Seebeck coefficient (Se) was investigated in dilute magnetic nanofluids (ferrofluids) composed of maghemite magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO). A 25% increase in the Se value was found when the external magnetic field was applied perpendicularly to the temperature gradient, reminiscent of an increase in the Soret coefficient (ST, concentration gradient) observed in the same fluids. In-depth analysis of experimental data, however, revealed that different mechanisms are responsible for the observed magneto-thermoelectric and -thermodiffusive phenomena. Possible physical and physico-chemical origins leading to the enhancemen…
Fluid–structure interaction of downwind sails: a new computational method
2018
The spreading of high computational resources at very low costs led, over the years, to develop new numerical approaches to simulate the fluid surrounding a sail and to investigate the fluidâstructure interaction. Most methods have concentrated on upwind sails, due to the difficulty of implementing downwind sailing configurations that present, usually, the problem of massive flow separation and large displacements of the sail under wind load. For these reasons, the problem of simulating the fluidâstructure interaction (FSI) on downwind sails is still subject of intensive investigation. In this paper, a new weak coupled procedure between a RANS solver and a FEM one has been implemented t…
A multi-scale method for complex flows of non-Newtonian fluids
2021
We introduce a new heterogeneous multi-scale method for the simulation of flows of non-Newtonian fluids in general geometries and present its application to paradigmatic two-dimensional flows of polymeric fluids. Our method combines micro-scale data from non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) with macro-scale continuum equations to achieve a data-driven prediction of complex flows. At the continuum level, the method is model-free, since the Cauchy stress tensor is determined locally in space and time from NEMD data. The modelling effort is thus limited to the identification of suitable interaction potentials at the micro-scale. Compared to previous proposals, our approach takes into acco…
PANORMUS-SPH. A new Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics solver for incompressible flows
2015
Abstract A new Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) solver is presented, fully integrated within the PANORMUS package [7] , originally developed as a Finite Volume Method (FVM) solver. The proposed model employs the fully Incompressible SPH approach, where a Fractional Step Method is used to make the numerical solution march in time. The main novelty of the proposed model is the use of a general and highly flexible procedure to account for different boundary conditions, based on the discretization of the boundary surfaces with a set of triangles and the introduction of mirror particles with suitable hydrodynamic properties. Both laminar and turbulent flows can be solved (the latter using t…
Analysis of steady state thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the DEMO Divertor cassette body cooling circuit
2017
Abstract Within the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 – “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by ENEA and University of Palermo to investigate the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. A comparative evaluation study has been performed considering the two different options under consideration for the divertor cassette body coolant, namely subcooled pressurized water and helium. The research activity has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite volume method and adopting a qualified Computational Fluid-Dynamic (CFD) code. CFD analy…
