Antimicrobial activity of selected plants employed in the Spanish mediterranean area. Part II

The antimicrobial properties of 59 plants used in folk medicine to treat general infectious diseases were studied. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of chloroform and methanol plant extracts were assayed using the agar-streak method and 38 of them showed activity against some of the microorganisms tested. Bioautography established the probable active compounds. Inhibition bands were identified as containing terpenoids and polyphenolic compounds.

This paper reviews the literature on recent antimicrobial plant products (1978–1988) and medicinal plants used for the treatment of infectious diseases. The review includes accounts of extracts, essential oils and other active principles isolated from plants that have been used in folk medicine as antimicrobial agents. The name and part of the plants studied, the spectrum of activity, type of active compounds and methods used are discussed, as are their mechanisms of action.
Cardiovascular effects of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts fromTeucrium flavum L.

The effects on arterial blood pressure and heart rate of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts from Teucrium flavumL. were analysed in urethane anaesthetized rats. Mean arterial blood pressure was significantly reduced by the i.v. administration of both extracts to normotensive rats. The methanol extract also induced a decrease in the heart rate, while the dichloromethanol extract lacked any effect on this parameter. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Some Astragalus species are used as forage for livestock and wild animals. Many species are used in folk medicine for their hepatoprotective, antioxidative, immunostimulant, and antiviral properties, whereas others are toxic, and in many cases the toxic principles can pass to humans through milk and meat. Three groups of chemicals have been described as pharmacologically active principles: polysaccharides, saponins and phenolics. In addition, three kinds of toxic principles have been reported: indolizidine alkaloids, aliphatic nitro compounds and selenium. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Neoclerodane Diterpenoids from Teucrium maghrebinum

Eight neoclerodane diterpenoids were identified in the extract of the aerial parts of Teucrium maghrebinum. Three of these, 12-epi-teucjaponin A (1), 12-epi-montanin D (2), and 12-epi-montanin B (3), are new natural products, whereas five, teucjaponin A, montanin D, 19-deacetylteuscorodol, teusalvin C (4), and montanin B, are already known. These eight compounds form four pairs of epimers at carbon C-12.
Acetogenins, Aporphinoids, and Azaanthraquinone from Annona cherimolia Seeds.

We have isolated several known steroids, glycosides, isoquinoline, and azaanthraquinone alkaloids, and five acetogenins belonging to a new group of secondary metabolites, the bis-tetrahydrofuran gamma-lactones, from the seeds of ANNONA CHERIMOLIA. The azaanthraquinone alkaloid isolated was identified as cleistopholine. One new acetogenin is reported here: laherradurine; a second new one was isolated, but its structure has not been determined. The other three: cherimoline, dihydrocherimoline, and asimicine have already been reported.

Medicinal plants have always had great value for the human population due to their valuable constituents and potential bioactivities. The objective of this review is to present an updated overview of an important medicinal plant genus Nepeta L., from the family Lamiaceae, revealing its traditional utilization, biological activity, phytoconstituents, and mechanisms of action. For this purpose, a literature survey was carried out by using SciFinder, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science followed by a revision of the bibliographies of the related articles. This article seeks to understand how people in the early modern age interpreted the nature of illness and the role that morality played in these interpretations. From this point of view illnesses were not only psycho-physical states or subjects for medical diagnosis but they were also subjects for narratives or stories through which people tried to understand what had caused their illness, and why it was happening to them. Illnesses were understood as strictly connected with the patient's character and were regarded as possible consequences of his personality. El presente artículo pretende analizar, a partir de diversos casos documentados en la segunda mitad del siglo XIV en la ciudad de Valencia, como las mujeres intervinieron a menudo en la atención médica de las personas con las que convivían, empezando por familiares, pero también vecinos, amigos o clientes. Se analizará el tipo de asistencia y las condiciones en que ésta se desarrollaba. Se pretende con ello demostrar el destacado papel que tuvieron en la medicina, muchas veces silenciado por no formar parte del colectivo masculino que practicaba de forma más o menos regulada el arte de curar.
