Review: Highlights in recent applications of electronic tongues in food analysis

This paper examines the main features of modern electronic tongues (e-tongues) and their most important applications in food analysis in this new century. The components of an e-tongue (automatic sampler, array of chemical sensors, and data processing system) are described. Applications commented include process monitoring, freshness evaluation and shelf-life investigation, authenticity assessment, foodstuff recognition, quantitative analysis, and other quality control studies. Finally, some interesting remarks concerning the strengths and weaknesses of e-tongues in food analysis are also mentioned.

Abstract This work has developed a miniaturized method based on matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) using C18 as dispersant and acetonitrile–water as eluting solvent for the analysis of legislated organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) in biota samples by GC with electron capture (GC-ECD). The method has compared Florisil®-acidic Silica and C18 as dispersant for samples as well as different solvents. On-line preconcentration strategies for analyzing pesticides in fruits and vegetables by micellar electrokinetic chromatography.

Five pesticides (fludioxonil, procymidone, pyriproxyfen, dinoseb and carbendazim) were separated in reversed migration micellar electrokinetic chromatography (RM-MEKC) using 20 mmol l(-1) phosphate buffer at pH 2.3, containing 25 mmol l(-1) sodium dodecylsulfate and 10% methanol. Three on-line concentration strategies, sweeping (SW), normal stacking with reversed migration and a water plug (SRW) and stacking with reverse migration and removal of sample matrix using polarity switching (SRMM), were compared. The potential of liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QqTOF-MS) to identify and confirm carbosulfan and seven of its main metabolites (carbofuran, 3-hydroxycarbofuran, 3-ketocarbofuran, 3-hydroxy-7-phenol carbofuran, 3-keto-7-phenolcarbofuran, 7-phenolcarbofuran, dibutylamine) at trace levels from food is explored for the first time. An automated, confirmatory and sensitive procedure has been developed and validated for the determination of Sudan (I-IV), Sudan Orange G, Sudan Red 7B and Para Red in hot chilli food samples. Moiety and linker site heterologies for highly sensitive immunoanalysis of cyprodinil in fermented alcoholic drinks

Cyprodinil is a new-generation anilinopyrimidine fungicide widely used in crop protection and frequently found in fruits. In this study, novel derivatives of cyprodinil with linker site heterologies were synthesized and employed in order to produce antibodies with enhanced affinity. Moreover, moiety-heterologous haptens were designed and prepared for assay sensitivity improvement. Cyprodinil is an anilinopyrimidine fungicide applied worldwide for the prevention and treatment of highly destructive plant diseases in a large variety of crops, including cereals, fruits, and vegetables. This paper describes the development of the first reported immunoassays for cyprodinil.
