Reading activities in EFL-textbooks : an analysis of upper secondary school textbooks

2013

Lukutaito on yksi suomalaisen opetusjärjestelmän päätavoitteista.Vieraskielisten tekstien lukutaidon merkitys korostuu lukiossa, jossa oppilaiden lukutaitoa arvioidaan jatkuvasti kielitaidon erillisenä osa-alueena. Vaikka vieraalla kielellä lukeminen eroaa merkittävästi äidinkielellä lukemisesta ja sitä tulisi tarkastella ympäristöönsä sidottuna ilmiönä, suuri osa lukutaidon tutkimuksesta liittyy nimenomaan äidinkielellä lukemisen tutkimukseen. Tässä tutkielmassa arvioidaan lukion viimeisen kurssin oppimateriaaleja vieraan kielen opetuksen näkökulmasta. Pääasiallinen tutkimuskysymys on millaisia luetunymmärtämisen harjoituksia oppikirjat tarjoavat lukutaidon harjoittamiseksi. Tutkielmassa a…

2014

In multilingual and multicultural contexts, individuals who speak foreign languages but are not translation professionals increasingly engage in oral or written translation and language mediation activities both at the workplace and in everyday life. These formal or informal translational actions are connected to various formal or informal interactions for a variety of purposes, and are often done on an ad hoc basis. In applied linguistics, more and more authors emphasize that integrating translation with foreign language learning and teaching not only has a number of benefits related to language learning, but can serve more general educational purposes as well. Unfortunately, translation h…

The English present perfect in Finnish 7th grade EFL textbooks

2014

Tutkimus on lähtökohdiltaan laadull…

Considerations Regarding the Relevance of Direct Foreign Investments in the Global Economy

2019

Abstract It is well known that the current business world, and also the investments, today are based on the global markets expansion. Contemporary reality shows us the image of a world which is irreversibly evolving towards the businesses globalization and the companies’ internationalization. The internal markets often become overcrowded, and the companies access more profoundly the global marketplace, which not only provides a place for all competitors, but also represents a source of new advantages for all. In the context of globalization the investment activity has gained new dimensions, becoming a global one, with serious implications, which manifest itself over the national economies a…

The Effect of Systemic Banking Crises on Entrepreneurship

2014

Economic crises have mixed effects on entrepreneurship. Through demand shocks, credit constraints, and unemployment, systemic banking crises affect the rate of start-up business creation, although the extent of their impact varies. Consequently, previous studies on the effect of crises on Entrepreneurship are inconclusive. The surge of global demand coupled with low credit availability reduces the prospects for new businesses. On the other hand, job losses caused by an economic crisis might lead many entrepreneurs to undertake new projects. These inconsistent conclusions highlight the need for more studies that explore the effect of systemic banking crises on entrepreneurship. This article …

EMNCS– Lessons On The Way To An Innovation-based Development. Setting The Backgrounds

2015

Abstract The main focus of (the two parts of) this article is on the emerging countries and their development paths. Particularly, it emphasizes on the role and contribution of innovation (of all kinds, in all its forms) for multinational companies from emerging economies (EMNC); the entire research endeavor is placed under the auspices of the knowledge-based society - the one that makes knowledge the ultimate source of power, enabling entities to use and potentially multiply it at the same time at global scale. Analyzing the situation of some emerging economies (starting from their best ranked multinationals), the article draws some empirical and theoretical conclusions on the ways knowled…

Remarks on verbo-tonal phonetics for a communicative context

2018

Foreign capital, credit constraints and continuity of firms’ R&D

2015

ABSTRACTIn this article, we investigate the role of foreign capital participation as a means for firms to overcome the obstacle posed by credit constraints to sustain R&D investments. Using data for Spanish manufacturing firms in the period 1990–2006, we show that firms with foreign capital are significantly less likely to stop already initiated R&D projects and also more likely to sustain R&D investment when facing credit constraints. Our results are robust to positive selection into foreign capital participation, which we control through a set of variables chosen from a propensity score estimation, and to firms’ fixed-effects.
