Photolysis of Tertiary Amines in the Presence of CO2: The Paths to Formic Acid, α-Amino Acids, and 1,2-Diamines

The photolysis of triethylamine (1a) in the presence of carbon dioxide leads to the hydrogenation of CO2, the α-C-C coupling of triethylamine (1a), and the CO2-insertion into the α-C-H σ-bond of amine 1a. This reaction is proposed to proceed through the radical ion pair [R3N·+·CO2·-] generated by the photoionization of amine 1a and the electron capture by CO2. The presence of lithium tetrafluoroborate in the reaction medium promotes the efficient and stereoselective α-C-C coupling of 1a by enhancing the production of α-dialkylamino radicals and the isomerization of N,N,N',N'-tetraethylbutane-2,3-diamine (4a).
Comparison of UV and charged aerosol detection approach in pharmaceutical analysis of statins

Abstract CAD (charged aerosol detector) has recently become a new alternative detection system in HPLC. This detection approach was applied in a new HPLC method for the determination of three of the major statins used in clinical treatment—simvastatin, lovastatin and atorvastatin. The method was optimized and the influence of individual parameters on CAD response and sensitivity was carefully studied. Chromatography was performed on a Zorbax Eclipse XDB C18 (4.6 mm × 75 mm, 3.5 μm), using acetonitrile and formic acid 0.1% as mobile phase. Isolated atrial amyloid, the most frequent senile cardiac amyloid type, was chemically analysed. Amyloid fibrils obtained from a patient (NIP) were extracted and the predominant low-molecular-weight polypeptide (approximately 3.5 kDa, designated ASc2 NIP) was isolated by size exclusion high performance liquid chromatography in 60% formic acid. N-Terminal amino acid sequence analysis of this polypeptide was identical to that of the atrial natriuretic peptide alpha-hANP for the first 12 residues determined.

Abstract The development of analytical methods that allow the simultaneous determination of a wide range of analytes with different properties is one of the focuses of attention in Analytical Chemistry. This work describes a proof-of-concept of the synergistic extraction of a planar paper-based sorptive phase modified with a polyamide such as nylon. This as-prepared sorptive phase enables the extraction of six penicillin-derived antibiotics of different polarity from human saliva samples in the same analysis, since the analytes either interact with the paper or with the nylon. Metal-free, Cu(II)- or Zn(II) tetrakis [4-(2,4-bis-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenoxy)]phthalocyanines loaded over TiO2 (anatase) proved to be active in the photoreduction of CO2 to formic acid (HCO2H) in water under UV-vis light. CuPc/TiO2 is catalyst of choice, allowing to reach a maximum yield of HCO2H, unequalled by any other similar catalytic systems. Because of their low environmental impact, low potential cost, and efficient power conversion, these multipurpose materials show promise in the setup of sustainable methods for CO2 valorization. A series of new mixed-mode reversed-phase/weak anion-exchange (RP/WAX) phases have been synthesized by immobilization of N-undecenyl-3-α-aminotropane onto thiol-modified silica gel by thiol-ene click chemistry and subsequent introduction of acidic thiol-endcapping functionalities of different type and surface densities. Rearrangement of the carbon skeleton in the intramolecular photoadduct of anthracene and benzene rings

Abstract The effectivity of optical switching between anthracene derivatives 3a,b and their intramolecular photocycloadducts 4a,b is impaired by traces of acid. The systematic treatment of 4a,b with an increasing excess of formic acid revealed that—apart from the normal enolether cleavage 4a,b → 6a,b → 7a,b —a cleavage with rearrangement of the carbon skeleton can occur: 5b → 6b′ . The driving force is a stability enhancement of the involved carbenium ions 5b → 5b′ . A further increased excess of formic acid leads finally to a competitive ether cleavage in the tetrahydrofuran ring 5b → 8 .
Kinetics of the permanganate oxidation of formic acid in aqueous solution

The kinetics of the permanganate oxidation of formic acid in aqueous perchloric acid at 30°C were examined by the spectrophotometric method. The chemical reaction 2MnO + 3HCOOH + 2H+ 2MnO2 + 3CO2 + 4H2O, appears to proceed via several parallel reactions. The overall rate equation has been obtained by using statistical multilinear regression analysis of the 660 cases studied, and the presence in the rate equation of two new terms in relation to previous studies shows that both permanganate autocatalytic effects and acid media inhibition must be taken into account when the reaction proceeds at constant ionic strength.
Photocatalytic conversion of glucose in aqueous suspensions of heteropolyacid-TiO2 composites.

Commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples were functionalized with a commercial Keggin heteropolyacid (HPA) H 3PW12O 40 (PW12) or with a hydrothermally home prepared K 7PW11O 39 salt (PW11). All the materials were characterized by specific surface area measurements (BET), XRD analyses, Raman, DRS along with SEM observations and they have been used for glucose photocatalytic conversion in an aqueous suspension. Different reaction extents and distribution of intermediate oxidation products were observed depending on the photocatalyst.
